Is anyone managing to see it tonight? Aurorawatch has downgraded to yellow warning, but I don't know if there's a timelag - it was really high up to about 6pm

I’m really hoping in North London!

ClairemacL · 11/05/2024 21:55

Still a bit early yet I think…

dottyp0104 · 11/05/2024 21:56

The app just updated to red... aurora likely. We are hopeful

Cofaki · 11/05/2024 21:56

Apparently it will be much later than last night, beyond midnight which is a shame as the kids were going to stay up for it.

GeckoFeet · 11/05/2024 21:56

I want to see it but I'm in a city

dottyp0104 · 11/05/2024 21:56

Im in Scotland

Gymmum82 · 11/05/2024 21:58

I can’t get the app to work. Planning on setting an alarm for about 1am and see if I can see anything

PiggieWig · 11/05/2024 22:00

The app isn’t working for me either. Probably too many people suddenly on it

Are you right in the centre or in suburbs? People were seeing it yesterday in suburbs. Not with naked eye, but using your mobile phone camera to look through.

We went to a viewpoint just outside the city. With the naked eye it looked like wispy cloud - but very strange cloud, with straight edges and coming and going - but with a phone you could see the colours,

Missed it last night and really hope it comes back tonight. I know it sounds corny to say seeing it is a bucket list thing but I'm undergoing cancer treatment at the moment so it would mean a lot

Fingers crossed for you for tonight. There’s also a chance for Sunday night apparently, but the alert is constantly changing

Looolaaa · 11/05/2024 22:10

Red alert now but not dark enough

Lokshen · 11/05/2024 22:11

Me too, same same. I'm going to set an alarm. Luckily happen to be in a very dark sky area this weekend. I hope you get your aurora!

Not corny at all. It was top of mine. Went to Iceland 8 years ago but didn’t get to see it.

Just remember to look at it through your camera.

haggisaggis · 11/05/2024 22:13

We’re at red at the moment but early yet. Drove to a high spot last night to get a good view but saw nothing and app downgraded to amber. Started to drive home then saw it - brilliant show and could see clearly without a lens. Got home and could see it from our garden! (North East Scotland)

Prettypup · 11/05/2024 22:16

What settings do you need to see it through on your phone? iPhone ideally please

SabreIsMyFave · 11/05/2024 22:18

Following! I saw it last night, but really want people to see it who missed it.

I am wishing and hoping and praying for you all! 🙏

COME ON AURORA!!!

OneRedSandal · 11/05/2024 22:18

When people travel to Iceland or Scandinavia to see the Northern lights, do they also have to look at them through a phone? Is it just in the UK that you can't see them without a camera?

Suburbs but only 14 miles from the city centre. My kids are asleep so can't drive further out. I wish I had known about this sooner. I just went out to have a look, the sky is pretty clear but didn't see anything. Will try again in 20 mins

@Prettypup I just waved my iPhone in the air. There was a bit on PM on radio 4 about it. Apparently if you keep your phone very still it ups the exposure time and catches more light, meant to re-listen because I only caught the tail-end.
