Is anyone managing to see it tonight? Aurorawatch has downgraded to yellow warning, but I don't know if there's a timelag - it was really high up to about 6pm

When we saw it last night it was in the west, not north, which I was very surprised about. We could see it clearly by naked eye - colours were clear. Just more vivid through a lens.

We couldn't see it by naked eye, but it was from E through N to W and overhead. Green towards horizon, and great pink rays radiating down from a point overhead. I don't think we got the full glory even through camera, but it was just so unlike anything normal that it was well worth seeing.

If it makes you feel any better or worse I went out
I saw absolutely nothing coloured only a very distinctive cloud formation
but my partner stood next to me could see vivid colors
and my Neighbours too 🤦‍♀️🤣
glad I haven't paid for a trip to Iceland to see them as clearly my eyes are crap at colours in the dark 🤷‍♀️
I did have a migraine tho so will give it all another go tonight if the cloud clears enough

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 11/05/2024 23:14

Too light still here- I think. we can see stars but the sky is blue not black
(in Stirlingshire)

MotivationalEater · 11/05/2024 23:14

It's clear skies tonight but my neighbours are just rude.

Why? What are they doing?

It's like the Blackpool illuminations round here with floodlights and house lights.

Oh what a shame. How shitty of them! Sad

There's an example of the difference you might see through a camera vs the naked eye in this ITV twitter post
https://twitter.com/ChrisPage90/status/1788881535480864774
I saw weak Aurora in Iceland (unexpectedly, as it was August) and to the naked eye it was a light grey wisp dancing around, but through the camera it was bright green. Those with sharper (younger) eyesight could spot it much more easily. Google Pixel camera on night sight is excellent, I got some great pics yesterday. Use your camera to find it at least, if there's no cloud cover and there's sightings around you. I use Hello Aurora but their servers are struggling a little today.

Nothing for me just near Manchester. Been out and checked with phone in every direction. Gutted! It's still quite cloudy but wondering if it might clear a bit if I stay awake. However last night I had looked out at midnight by coincidence, as I'd no idea about the AB being visible, and saw normal darkness everywhere. Yet 10 mins down the road people were getting the full on show, even in the city centre with all the light pollution. So maybe I also can't see the lights anyway as another pp said!

LunaNorth · 11/05/2024 23:28

I’m on my swing seat wrapped up in a blanket. No luck yet (near York).

skeettch · 11/05/2024 23:30

Just opened the door to check again and my dog has just helpfully crapped in the long grass in the garden so I need to try to avoid that particular booby trap when I next go out. Thanks for that.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 11/05/2024 23:31

Same here in the Dales. Nowt !

DrSeuss · 11/05/2024 23:32

Slight regular colour changes in the sky to the North here on Teesside. Slight but there. Either that or Middlesbrough is on fire, which is also possible....🤔

MonsteraMama · 11/05/2024 23:35

Saw it lovely and clear last night here in North Wales, can't see anything tonight though. Still hoping for another sighting!

Ineedwinenow · 11/05/2024 23:36

Nothing here in Derbyshire yet..

Grin that’s made me chuckle, the same could be said for Derby 😆

geomagnetic activities have died down now...

Aurora tonight (Saturday)
TheFormidableMrsC · 11/05/2024 23:40

I'm in North Herts. We had a beautiful display last night and decided to head out into the fields tonight to see it again. We've given up, there wasn't anything to see. It's possible that might change later but I saw on Sky news earlier that it was likely to be better in the North tonight.

notimagain · 11/05/2024 23:42

TBH todays MSM hasn't done a great job at expectation management, the reality is it's really really rare to get an event of the magnitude of last night two nights running...certainly in the southern uk.

The predictions for tonight coming out of some of the agencies involved in this were being downgraded several hours ago.

Those predictions might be wrong so it doesn't mean it is a waste of time checking.

Good Luck

WingingItSince1973 · 11/05/2024 23:44

I've just been stood on a really high hill with hundreds of other people and we have given up and driving home.

Passenger7 · 11/05/2024 23:46

I like very near the Emley moor mast, it’s absolutely heaving this evening with cars blocking the road to get a view 🙄 I’m trying to get a baby to sleep and have counted three cars in 10 minutes using my driveway to turn around and making loads of noise crunching over the gravel!
