Is anyone managing to see it tonight? Aurorawatch has downgraded to yellow warning, but I don't know if there's a timelag - it was really high up to about 6pm

I’ve seen it might be better Sunday night than tonight?

imnottoofussed · 11/05/2024 22:21

I looked out last night and didn't see a thing. Unfortunately cloudy here tonight so don't think I'll have any luck

When people travel to Iceland or Scandinavia to see the Northern lights, do they also have to look at them through a phone? Is it just in the UK that you can't see them without a camera?

I could see them without camera

I think it depends on how much other light there is. Presumably in a "dark skies" area of the UK you'd get a much better view than in the middle of Sheffield.

Last night's was good because we were right under it, instead of viewing it from the southern edge. So instead of it being a glow on the northern horizon, it was right above us.

What settings do you need to see it through on your phone? iPhone ideally please

Night vision, maximum exposure.

Whereabouts? In terms of darkness? How many stars could you see, or would you see on a dark night? We can barely see Orion. Milky Way is a distant memory.

I found in Iceland it was clearer by naked eye but we were on the ocean so no light pollution

I saw it pretty clear where I am :) was so magical

poppym12 · 11/05/2024 22:26

Forgot last night and it's a bit cloudy to the north here now. What alert app are you all using?

TraitForTravel · 11/05/2024 22:27

In terms of phone settings, go to "More" or Settings and put Speed (or Aperture Speed) as 10. I am in London so couldn't get a good photo yesterday but the best setting was a speed around 8-10.

CypressSunflower · 11/05/2024 22:27

Gutted missed it last night. DH refused to let DC stay up and it didn’t feel like as much fun to go on my own. Wish I had though when I woke up to all the photos. Fingers crossed for tonight.

I'm in the northeast. Just behind my house. Was pretty clear. I'm hoping to see it again just need the clouds to bugger off!

MotivationalEater · 11/05/2024 22:29

What time is it expected to be visible?

Cocopogo · 11/05/2024 22:30

So gutted I missed it last night so will be looking out for it tonight

Any time from now to 1am. Last night, it was its best between 11pm and midnight. Smile

I have an old(ish) iPhone I got amazing shots just by taking pics as normal. It automatically went to night mode and had a 3 second shutter speed (or whatever it's called).

Some of the newer iPhones have 10 seconds I believe.

When you have your camera app open and pointed to where you want it. Touch the screen and a wee "sun" icon will come up. Keep your finger on the sun and pull it down to a lower exposure (my daughter showed me how, I kept just pressing it, but no you have to keep your finger on it and pull it down).

Then take the pic. Hope that helps :)

Sometimes teenage daughters have their uses!

I'm guessing just here for some reason?
