Is anyone managing to see it tonight? Aurorawatch has downgraded to yellow warning, but I don't know if there's a timelag - it was really high up to about 6pm

I don't think I'm going to see it, all my neighbours have massive floodlights in their gardens that are on all night.

NoWordForFluffy · 11/05/2024 22:38

I had a nap between 5-7 this evening to prepare! The skies are partially clear to the north here, so we may be lucky!

When people travel to Iceland or Scandinavia to see the Northern lights, do they also have to look at them through a phone? Is it just in the UK that you can't see them without a camera?

They can be seen in Iceland etc by the naked eye, but still nowhere near as spectacular as they are on camera - they are sort of tinted beams of light, rather than the really intense bright colours you can see through a camera. We humans are not well adapted to seeing in low light, the camera can just see a lot more than we can.

It's possible to see them in the UK with the naked eye too, I did last night.

If I'm allowed to post links, this is a good article and shows what you can expect to see with the naked eye vs through a camera ewenbell.com/blog/Why_Auroras_Look_Different_on_The_Camera

PickAChew · 11/05/2024 22:39

I trued to see it last night but we gave too much light pollution to the north of us. Could see quite a few stars but the horizon in that direction is always white.

GypsophiliaandCarnations · 11/05/2024 22:39

DH refused to let DC stay up and it didn’t feel like as much fun to go on my own.

Why didn't you overrule him?

We were really lucky last night. Am watching tonight but think it's going to be a lot later

Wow! Where are you?

Why until 1 am?

This is what I've picked up - you get storm on sun sending a stream of particles towards earth, Aurorawatch and the associated app measure the particles. I presume they are also able to see the solar storm itself, and there's a time lag between that and the particles reaching earth, , and therefore they have prior knowledge that it'll be calming down after 1am.

Or this may all be utter rubbish.

I could see them with the naked eye in East Surrey (suburbs inside M25) last night - I was surprised but from 11 till midnight it was very vivid (much more so through a camera of course).

Could you not walk to somewhere that is a bit darker?

TokyoSushi · 11/05/2024 22:42

It was so lovely last night, I did try to wake the DC (10 & 12) but they were absolutely fast asleep, I've promised if they're there tonight I'll go into their rooms and turn the 'big light' on so that they definitely wake up! 'The internet' seems to suggest there's a better chance tomorrow though...

PickAChew · 11/05/2024 22:43

It's also likely to be cloudy in a lot of places tomorrow, @TokyoSushi

haggisaggis · 11/05/2024 22:44

When we saw it last night it was in the west, not north, which I was very surprised about. We could see it clearly by naked eye - colours were clear. Just more vivid through a lens.

I have an old(ish) iPhone I got amazing shots just by taking pics as normal. It automatically went to night mode and had a 3 second shutter speed (or whatever it's called).

Some of the newer iPhones have 10 seconds I believe.

When you have your camera app open and pointed to where you want it. Touch the screen and a wee "sun" icon will come up. Keep your finger on the sun and pull it down to a lower exposure (my daughter showed me how, I kept just pressing it, but no you have to keep your finger on it and pull it down).

Then take the pic. Hope that helps :)

Sometimes teenage daughters have their uses!

I also have an older phone and couldn't work this out. Thank you so much for explaining!

Bibbitybobbity70 · 11/05/2024 22:52

Have friend who got amazing pics last night using night settings 🫰

Mine too, right in the middle of my northerly view. Bad enough having then shine right into my bedroom.
