GUEST WANTS SHOWER CURTAIN INSTALLED.

I have a friend coming to stay with me for over a week in the Summer. She has sent a message asking that a shower curtain be installed in the en-suite bathroom she will use for the duration of her stay. She will pay.

Due to the shape of the bath etc it would be tricky to install a curtain and spoil the look of the place, I'm reluctant to do this, especially as she's getting free board and lodging in Edinburgh during festival time. AIBU reasonable in refusing? PS: She is a very large lady - no one else has complained about this, so guess it's due to her size.

Why on Earth would she need this? Has she said why?

WimpoleHat · 08/05/2024 08:16

If she wants particular accommodation, she needs to book a hotel!

Lilly11a · 08/05/2024 08:17

Is it possible to get a telescopic pole - we have one of these and it doesn't need any fittings so you can just remove after she leaves

Overtheatlantic · 08/05/2024 08:17

might be from a country where people use shower curtains and feels uncomfortable without one

Ringpeace · 08/05/2024 08:17

"Please remodel your home in order to accommodate my bulk during my free stay in a very expensive city's most expensive time of year."

My answer would be like it or lump it.

Presumably she demands hotels install them as well?

Misthios · 08/05/2024 08:19

Right so what's there at the moment, some sort of screen? Yes you can get telescopic poles and the rest of it but that's only half the story if you have to dismantle a screen or something.

JenniferEckles · 08/05/2024 08:19

There is presumably something there already to stop water flooding the bathroom that works for you?

I would avoid the use of the word 'lump' in this situation. 😉

Can people see in the bathroom or something and she is wanting privacy? It seems a very unusual request. I’m not sure I’d even know if my friends has shower curtains or not!

Peachy2005 · 08/05/2024 08:21

Is it a bath that only has a handheld shower with no screen so users just have to sit down and try not to get the floor wet? I get why she doesn’t like it but it’s your house so it’s her tough luck.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/05/2024 08:21

Wtf? 🤣

Anameisaname · 08/05/2024 08:22

Just write back and say "thank you for the kind offer but unfortunately we have no easy way to install a rail hence we don't have a curtain just a screen [assuming that's what you have]. Please dint worry about water on the floor, we have a great absorbant bathmat and we will put two in to alternate and dry. Hope that works see you soon"

If the screen doesn't go up to the ceiling you can just put the pole above it. We did this in our old bathroom because the screen wasn't up to the job of containing my youngest's enthusiastic and splashy approach to showers. We put a spring loaded telescopic pole above the screen and then the curtain hung inside the shower screen. You do need to have two walls close enough together on either side to brace the pole between for it to work.

IOMQuestions · 08/05/2024 08:23

what’s there now?

maddening · 08/05/2024 08:23

What is there currently? Why does her size mean she can't use what is there currently?

Do you have a standing shower available in another bathroom?

Maray1967 · 08/05/2024 08:23

Is it that the fixed glass screen makes the bath space too small for her and she wants to leave it open and use the curtain instead - that will obviously push out to accommodate her size?

soupfiend · 08/05/2024 08:24

Another OP with tons of information missing, impossible to make sense of

She must have said why she wanted this
What is the current set up, do you have a shower or just a shower attachment, is there a screen there already or not

BIossomtoes · 08/05/2024 08:24

Perhaps I’m thick but I can’t for the life of me see the relevance of her size.

Hopingtobe4 · 08/05/2024 08:24

This is such an unusual request! So is there a half screen there at present?

Ringpeace · 08/05/2024 08:25

You could just get her some wet wipes?

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 08/05/2024 08:25

OP you are definitely not unreasonable for not wanting to make adjustments to your home. If the walls are close enough together either side if get a spring loaded rail to go up temporarily. She is being a bit cheeky, but if you can provide a temporary solution to accommodate her I would. Has she said why she wants a shower curtain?

Mcvitieschoccybiscuit · 08/05/2024 08:27

She’s maybe conscious of the water splashing in the floor? I’m assuming she’s stayed before and perhaps found it a problem and was worried she caused some damage. It is odd at first take but maybe she’s been worrying about it after her last trip(if she has been before).

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2024 08:28

DOES SHE NOW?!

Assuming there's suitably positioned walls a telescopic pole would seem like the obvious solution. Cheap, no permanent fixing required, that's what we have over our bath.

Maybe she wants a shower instead of a bath which, without a curtain, won't be possible without getting water everywhere?

SpringBunnies · 08/05/2024 08:28

It’s your home and you are offering for free. If she wants adjustments, she can pay for a hotel or air bnb with a shower curtain. Even if you jphave only got a bath and a hand held shower head, I wouldn’t ask you to adjust for me. I really hate that but you can’t be picky about free lodging.
