GUEST WANTS SHOWER CURTAIN INSTALLED.

I have a friend coming to stay with me for over a week in the Summer. She has sent a message asking that a shower curtain be installed in the en-suite bathroom she will use for the duration of her stay. She will pay.

Due to the shape of the bath etc it would be tricky to install a curtain and spoil the look of the place, I'm reluctant to do this, especially as she's getting free board and lodging in Edinburgh during festival time. AIBU reasonable in refusing? PS: She is a very large lady - no one else has complained about this, so guess it's due to her size.

OP posts:

If you let the room on AirBnb, whoever stayed there probably wouldn't be very impressed at not being able to shower.

Librarybooker · 08/05/2024 08:54

So, do you have a wet room approach? I can’t imagine how an over bath shower is practical without something to prevent the bathroom/ensuite getting soaked unless it is a kind of wet room

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/05/2024 08:54

Hi Susan, I’m really sorry but that’s not possible as we do not want a shower curtain in there. Don’t worry if you splash water around, we will supply bath mats. If that makes you uncomfortable we are happy to supply you with suggestions of hotels etc if that would suit more. Look forward to seeing you.

CocoapuffPuff · 08/05/2024 08:54

OP, you haven't said if there's a fixed screen already.
If there's nothing, then yes, you need to protect your floor when she's using the shower.
Is there anything stopping water spraying about atm?

Bearpawk · 08/05/2024 08:56

Why won't you say what's in place already?

Eggmoobean · 08/05/2024 08:56

“No sorry I won’t be doing that. “ then she comes to stay or books a hotel. What a cheek!

AmiShitsaline · 08/05/2024 08:57

You could use a room divider with the shower curtain attached to the top

We don't have a curtain, we have a an openable glass screen (maybe they're actually called doors?).

Well if there's a suitable screen or door, it would seem a bit mad to require a curtain as well, but until the OP explains the current situation properly, we don't know who is BU.

AmiShitsaline · 08/05/2024 09:00

something like this with a curtain attached

So you don’t have a screen or a curtain? Is it a wet room, and if so does she know that?

I think it’s good that she asked. Honest open communication. If she hadn’t asked, and it had come out at the end of the week when you were wondering why she had started to smell, you would have been on here starting a thread about that instead.

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2024 09:02

Or moaning about her because she flooded the bathroom and destroyed the ceiling of the room below.

mondaytosunday · 08/05/2024 09:03

You haven't explained what's there now. If nothing how do you stop water from going on the floor? That's not a size issue.

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 08/05/2024 09:06

I'm guessing she's worrying about water on the floor. You could put a second bath mat down.?

She's very lucky to get free accommodation for the Fringe !!

Alittlefrustrated · 08/05/2024 09:06

If you are very large, water will run off th body and on to the floor. She's trying not to cause damage.

drusth · 08/05/2024 09:07

Why would anyone drill holes into their walls to accommodate a guest?!

She sounds entitled, I would be telling her it's best she stays in a hotel.

Unless suction cup shower curtains exists, in which case she should source her own.

T1Dmama · 08/05/2024 09:07

Yes a simple reply saying ‘sorry but due to the shape of the bath a shower curtain would look unsightly so I don’t want to get one fitted,
Maybe ask her what the issue is with the current set up? See if you can find another resolution for her. Maybe other guests have had the same issue but never felt it important enough to comment on.

I challenge anyone of any size to shower over an uncurtained or unscreened bath without water going all over the floor.

Londonrach1 · 08/05/2024 09:09

Send her a list of local hotels....yanbu.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 08/05/2024 09:09

I don't understand the set up or the relevance of her size? How do you currently stop water going on the floor when showering?

CelesteCunningham · 08/05/2024 09:17

It's a bit cheeky, but a those telescopic poles are cheap and you could take it down after without issue. A slightly random request but one I like to think I'd go with to make a guest feel comfortable in my home.

Peachy2005 · 08/05/2024 09:21

It will be this kind of setup. No shower screen so you have to sit or hunker in the bath and still be careful or water will get everywhere so taking a standing shower is impossible. Your friend’s size is irrelevant: it’s an old-fashioned UK thing, from the days when people took more baths or washed their hair leaning over the bath - proper showers were rare. Our family bathroom in our rented house is like this (never use it) and we just looked at another house with the same arrangement (wish I had taken a pic as bath, sink and toilet were floral-patterned!). It’s still OPs house and choice and expecting her to change it is CF behaviour by her friend….but friend’s size is irrelevant!!

We have a moveable screen and a wide at one end, p-shaped bath. All the water stays in the bath.

I struggle to imagine anyone would have no sort of 'shield' tbh.

CantDealwithChristmas · 08/05/2024 09:23

Yes it's to do with her size. Larger bodies tend to mean more water from the shower on the floor. She's worried about ruining your bathroom floor and the inconvenience, damage and embarrassment that could cause.

I think it woud be kind to accommodate her needs if you can, just as you would with someone living with a disability.

Foggymcfogson · 08/05/2024 09:25

Confirm to her there is a door on your bathroom and a lock...
