Our neighbour (in the flat below) has asked we stop talking at 9:45pm at night?

We live in a shared townhouse and the couple downstairs have asked that my partner & I stop talking at 9:45 pm in the evening because they can hear us? We have only been living here for 1 week and get the kids to bed early, we are then woken up by them below speaking at 6am. AIBU?

Dahek?
Between midnight and 7 am you need to be quiet. But talking at a normal volume is fine. Shouting, crying, screaming etc would not be. But I guess you aren’t doing any of that haba

Irridescantshimmmer · 22/04/2024 22:25

OMG.........foolish neighbours!

You can legitimately talk as loud as you want until 23:00, then talk quieter.......this will stop authorities getting involved, just in case they take it further.

Your neighbours are completely unhinged and with screws loose to make such unreasonable demands on you.

LauderSyme · 22/04/2024 22:25

I lived in a first floor flat when ds was tiny. My neighbour below stressed me out so much with her constant complaining about the noise. I tried very hard to minimise it but she obviously thought I wasn't trying hard enough, and she took to putting the radio on at top volume then going out for the evening.

You should have kept reading!

Ah ha! 😆

I am indeed taking the piss.

Are they Swiss?

Ha! I think they're only banned from making noise on Sundays!

Causewerethespecialtwo · 22/04/2024 22:40

I’m petty as fuck. Every night this week at exactly 9.45pm, not a minute before, not a minute after, we would have the noisiest sex we’ve ever had. Obviously no words would be uttered, but earth shatteringly loud sex.

See if they like that better.

OutOfTheHouse · 22/04/2024 22:44

I am very noise phobic but this is madness.

I think you need to swap flats with the other thread where the poster is complaining the the kitten in the flat upstairs is too loud.

Jellybeanz456 · 22/04/2024 22:47

PotOfViolas · 22/04/2024 16:36

Is it a town house converted into separate flats or a house share? It sounds like the noise insulation is the problem. I'm guessing if they're up at 6 they go to bed about 9.45 and are disturbed.

Thats there problem they shouldn't live in a flat if general noises disturb them.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 22/04/2024 22:54

If they can hear you talking, and you can hear them, sound proofing is a failure

viques · 22/04/2024 23:28

LakeTiticaca · 22/04/2024 20:34

Pass surreptitious notes to each other instead, like schoolgirls in class 🤣🤣

But no giggling please, especially on the back row.

Roomination · 22/04/2024 23:53

It’s nearly midnight. Make sure you don’t snore, talk or walk in your sleep and if you need to go to the loo before 7am, do it silently.

TigerJoy · 23/04/2024 00:04

Is this my old housemate?

She wanted me to brush my teeth and go to the loo for the final time that night, at 10pm, so she wouldn't be disturbed by me going to the bathroom later. Yes, I wouldn't have been allowed to pee afterwards.

Every night.

Your neighbours are batshit. You have every right to live a normal life in your home.

Thevelvelletes · 23/04/2024 00:15

If a flat has been empty a while you do get used to the quiet and you have to re adjust when people move in again.
Now remember and have no talking nookie after 9.45.....its the law.😘

oakleaffy · 23/04/2024 00:49

Applescruffle · 22/04/2024 16:40

"stop talking" 😂
Not "stop using the washing machine" or "stop your dog barking" or "turn the TV down"they want you not to speak to each other. They actually said that. In real life. Out loud 😂

Can you imagine?

"Quick, darling, speak quicker! it's 9:44!"

🤣 The last sentence.

PoopingAllTheWay · 23/04/2024 00:54

We will stop talking at 9.45pm if you dont start talking till 9.45am

Simple!!!!

JanglingJack · 23/04/2024 00:55

When's your moving in party? are we all invited?

Talk quieter? In your own home?

I would not be whispering at any time in my own home

OP, Do invite us all!

Kandalama · 23/04/2024 01:17

That’s just madness.
If you can hear them they they can hear you so

If you don’t have carpets, get some and put in extra thick underlay 15mm min. As it’s airborne sound add lots of absorbing materials to the room, cushions, curtains any fabrics etc

Tell them you can hear them as well and ask them not to speak at 6am 🤣 and suggest they add insulating board to the ceiling, carpet and absorbing fabrics.

Or you could both put egg boxes all over your walls but the dusting is a nightmare 🤯

nonevernotever · 22/04/2024 17:26

Seriously?? If someone tried asking me not to talk to my husband at any hour and text him instead they'd get a very dusty answer. There's being considerate/a good neighbour and there's being completely bonkers

@GalileoHumpkins was joking. And it wasn't a bad joke actually.

KomodoOhno · 23/04/2024 01:32

WaitingforCheese · 22/04/2024 16:36

They’re mad. I’d be tempted to make some mental list of when you can hear them. 6am-7am etc. fight crazy with crazy

I'd definitely go with this. Embarrass them into stopping their stupidity.

😂😂😂😂😂

321user123 · 23/04/2024 02:46

Well.. besides the obvious they’re being ridiculous….

they said don’t talk, they’ve said nothing about TV, cooking noises and so on 🤪🤭 (they’ll obviously retaliate at 6am, but you’ve asserted dominance lol).

They're just trying to assert dominance and rule you into submission. You literally didn’t even unpack yet!

Minimili · 23/04/2024 02:50

I hope OP hasn’t been too scared to reply in case the noise of all these notifications has annoyed her neighbours 😂.

I currently have very loud owls driving me mad outside my house. It sounds like they are having an absolute hoot but it’s doing my head in!

I have screech owls that get going about 3am. I feel your pain. I'd much rather hear people talking.
