To think my boyfriend is tight?

We go on holiday a week tomorrow
As a treat the night before we have booked a hotel at the airport.
I said we can get a meal in the restaurant the night before at hotel
He looked at prices and said he isn't paying that -and we will take a subway.
It's £25.50 each for fish and chips
Or around £22 for a carbonara

You're on holiday,money doesn't matter does it?
Aibu to think he is being tight ?

£25 each for fish and chips, in what I would assume is a premier inn/travelodge type place is an absolute rip off and I would be looking to see if there were any alternatives or even get a delivery. I wouldn't go as far as taking a subway with me tho, that would be cold and soggy by the time we got there.

ohlaohla · 14/04/2024 13:04

It's a Hilton hotel so I know it's gonna be a bit more pricey

FusilliNom · 14/04/2024 13:05

Is it a fancy hotel? You say it's a treat the night before but is it a nice hotel or is it just a stop over before your flight?

AuntieJoyce · 14/04/2024 13:05

I’m with you, OP. Food and drink in the hotel the night before is part of the holiday for me.

Ah cross posted. Then yeah he's being tight.

Orophile · 14/04/2024 13:06

It depends. If it is a nice restaurant and the food is good quality I would pay. If it was bog standard and overpriced I would look for an alternative. However, I wouldn't want a subway. Surely there is a middle ground and an alternative restaurant can be found?

Just seen your update. I have never eaten in a Hilton Hotel. I would look at the reviews and see what else is around and then decide.

BMW6 · 14/04/2024 13:09

Sorry but I'm with him on this one! I don't so much object to the price, but more what you are getting for that price. £25 for fish & chips or a Carbonara is a rip off.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 14/04/2024 13:10

Airport Hilton doesn't necessarily mean the extra pounds are worth it tho, especially when it comes to food.

I quite like staying at a hotel the night before a flight and eating out, but those prices, even for a captive audience airport hotel, seem OTT.

coastalhawk · 14/04/2024 13:11

I'd find that a waste of money tbh and would rather keep that money for holiday itself rather than mediocre meal before it. You probably just have different feeling about these things - his are just as valid.

I bet the carbonara will be microwaved!

ohlaohla · 14/04/2024 13:11

He says he would rather use the money and go on a boat trip on holiday or put it towards a nice meal on holiday rather than pay for overpriced food
Just put a downer on it

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/04/2024 13:12

Of course money matters. You still need to have enough, holiday or not. Airport Hilton’s aren’t all that and £25 is OTT.

HermioneWeasley · 14/04/2024 13:13

It depends - if it means you can’t afford to do other things then yes I’d just grab a meal deal. If it doesn’t make any difference to your budget, I’d probably just eat there.

BettyShagter · 14/04/2024 13:13

OMG airport Hiltons serve very mediocre food at best.

They're just a Travelodge by a different name.

I wouldn't pay that either, you're talking £30 once you add on a drink.

I’d feel exactly the same. For me the holiday starts on holiday. He’s just got a different point of view.

TipsyKoala · 14/04/2024 13:14

I agree with him. Save it and spend it on a nicer meal on holiday rather than spending it on airport hotel food at inflated prices.

arethereanyleftatall · 14/04/2024 13:14

Isn't this less about whether you're tight or not and more about what your budget is?

Ladyj84 · 14/04/2024 13:14

Flipping heck nothing treat or not would make me pay those prices

TakeOnFlea · 14/04/2024 13:15

The airport Hilton's are just glorified premier inns. Nothing special about them at all. He's right, no way would I pay £25 for shit fish and chips 🤣

Being ripped off and knowing it the night before your holiday takes the "shine" off things more than being savvy with money and using it for a boat trip. YABU

chipsandpeas · 14/04/2024 13:15

im with him and im far from tight when it comes to holidays

In that case, he's absolutely right.

This ^^

I think some people see the word 'Hilton' and think it's going to be similar to their posh hotels, which usually ends in a short, sharp shock.

ohlaohla · 14/04/2024 13:17

Well we haven't got a massive budget this holiday as it was last minute and not our main holiday so I guess saving money won't be a bad thing.
I think it's because we normally have a routine of meal in hotel etc
He's a Man U fan and they are playing next weekend so I think he's plan is to get drinks and just sit in room and watch the match
