To think my boyfriend is tight?

We go on holiday a week tomorrow
As a treat the night before we have booked a hotel at the airport.
I said we can get a meal in the restaurant the night before at hotel
He looked at prices and said he isn't paying that -and we will take a subway.
It's £25.50 each for fish and chips
Or around £22 for a carbonara

You're on holiday,money doesn't matter does it?
Aibu to think he is being tight ?

Well we haven't got a massive budget this holiday as it was last minute and not our main holiday so I guess saving money won't be a bad thing.
I think it's because we normally have a routine of meal in hotel etc
He's a Man U fan and they are playing next weekend so I think he's plan is to get drinks and just sit in room and watch the match

Excellent, so you can take the £30 you saved and treat yourself while he does that.

Win - Win.

Lyricallie · 14/04/2024 13:18

I’m with him. I stay in a lot of airport hotels with work and the food is always disappointing the only silver lining for me is that it’s on expenses. I wouldn’t be paying my own money for it. Could you go out for your dinner first somewhere more reasonable and then head to the hotel?

HarrietSchulenberg · 14/04/2024 13:19

I totally agree with your boyfriend. £50 on shit hotel food (and it will be shit, an airport Hilton is a glorified Wetherspoons) when you could spend it on something fun while you're actually away is a waste of good money. Get a cheap takeaway - holiday doesn't start till you're on the plane.

Sunflowersinthehaze · 14/04/2024 13:19

If you haven’t got a massive budget like you say then I definitely agree with him. (I would anyway). £22 for some pasta is something I wouldn’t pay! Not tight just sensible to put it towards a trip out on your holiday.

taxguru · 14/04/2024 13:19

At that kind of airport hotel, you're just going to get frozen fish & chips so yes £25 is a complete rip off. You'd be better getting a JustEat from a local chip shop!

Completely different to a quality/destination hotel where eating a meal would be an experience in itself!

So YABU - spend the money on something more worthwhile.

PossumintheHouse · 14/04/2024 13:20

Meh. I'd much rather grab a £9 footlong of my choosing rather than go a mediocre and very overpriced plate of what will undoubtedly be a dry and bland fish and chips. Save you cash to splash out on food during the holiday.

Investinmyself · 14/04/2024 13:20

I’m with him. It will be average not great. Could you compromise and take some nice snacks for the room eg M & S. I’d much prefer that.

Itsonlymashadow · 14/04/2024 13:21

I think the biggest problem here is that he tells you he doesn’t want to spend money on something over priced and you call him tight and accuse him of putting a downer on it.

Your emotional response to his point, is your issue. You are putting the downer on it.

Testina · 14/04/2024 13:23

Of course money matters!
Don’t be so childish.
And it’s not a “treat” to waste £20+ quid on shitty chain hotel food (and I’m not a snob - that really is going to be shitty for the price).
He’s just got more sense than you, that’s not being tight! Especially because he’s clearly willing to spend out on the holiday trips with the same money.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 14/04/2024 13:24

Airport hotels are not a thing of luxury. The Hilton is just a (sometimes) more expensive Premier Inn. I wouldn't regard eating at either of them a treat. Can you eat somewhere else on the way, or get a decent takeaway.

wangsgs · 14/04/2024 13:25

I don't think he's being tight, he just doesn;t value what you do. I wouldn't want to spend my money on that either.

Hermione101 · 14/04/2024 13:28

I’m with your boyfriend and he’s not being tight at all! I loathe spending money on mediocre food. I would argue that he’s more savvy with his money.

Investinmyself · 14/04/2024 13:31

Other thing is feeling crappy on the flight. Both meals you mention are greasy and fatty, I personally wouldn’t choose that before a flight.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 14/04/2024 13:32

All hotel food is a rip-off, you can almost always get something better - UNLESS it's an airport hotel where you probably don't have much else around you.

In those circs, I'd rather eat in whatever city you're in before heading to the hotel and make that part of it, go for something nice. then take snacks and drinks for the room. But if all that sounds like too much hassle, yeah I'd eat in the restaurant. Like fuck am I munching on a soggy subway.

From your update though, I wonder if he's more worried about missing the game. Let him have the subway and you go the restaurant by yourself.

They’re not having it for breakfast!
I don’t see why it would make them feel bad on a flight anyway, but even so - they’ll have digested it before they’re waving their boarding cards around!

DancingFerret · 14/04/2024 13:37

He's demonstrating a sensible approach to money. Why pay a small fortune for such very ordinary food, holiday or not? We've moved on from having to think too carefully about spending money, but that doesn't mean we splash out on anything that's clearly a rip-off or poor value.

GrumpyPanda · 14/04/2024 13:37

Restaurant sounds meh so I'm team bf. Would there be anything decent landside at the actual airport?

sixtiesbaby88 · 14/04/2024 13:38

Check to see if there is anywhere else to eat - is there an ibis hotel at the airport as well? They usually have a bar with slightly more reasonably priced food.

Newbutoldfather · 14/04/2024 13:38

It is impossible to answer that question unless you said whether you are comfortably off and don’t care about £25, or you budget carefully and that is a significant amount.

Is he normally tight?

It does sound like you have different priorities, though.

70sdisco24 · 14/04/2024 13:43

I’d rather a Subway too.

PinkiOcelot · 14/04/2024 13:49

Totally agree with your BF. No way would I pay that for fish and chips or carbonara.

BettyShagter · 14/04/2024 13:52

Actually if money doesn't matter, you can pay for the overpriced fish and chips for the two of you.

Why not suggest that OP?

Investinmyself · 14/04/2024 14:04

It depends I definitely wouldn’t want something like that before flying. Creamy or greasy meal and then up crack of dawn for a flight definitely wouldn’t suit me. Don’t know how new bf is but he might be more comfortable saying I prefer a subway than I’m worried about getting the shits on a flight.

B1anche · 14/04/2024 14:08

The food at airport Hilton Hotels is really poor quality and overpriced. Your boyfriend is right. I would take a bottle of wine too if you fancy a drink.

fieldsofbutterflies · 14/04/2024 14:09

YABVU. There's no way I would pay £25 for a portion of hotel fish and chips.

If you want a meal in the hotel, why don't you offer to stump up £50+ for it?
