To think my boyfriend is tight?

We go on holiday a week tomorrow
As a treat the night before we have booked a hotel at the airport.
I said we can get a meal in the restaurant the night before at hotel
He looked at prices and said he isn't paying that -and we will take a subway.
It's £25.50 each for fish and chips
Or around £22 for a carbonara

You're on holiday,money doesn't matter does it?
Aibu to think he is being tight ?

Are you also a football fan? That sounds shit otherwise

He says he would rather use the money and go on a boat trip on holiday or put it towards a nice meal on holiday rather than pay for overpriced food
Just put a downer on it

That sounds like a much better way to spend £50.
Can you get cheaper food near the hotel or en route?

Dacadactyl · 14/04/2024 14:52

I'm with your boyfriend.

I would actually dump someone who was prepared to pay 25 quid for fish or chips because it'd be clear we had totally different attitudes to money

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 14/04/2024 14:58

If it's Manchester airport then I normally pop into the Trafford Centre on the way and eat there and pick up a few treats for the room

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 14/04/2024 15:01

I'm with your bf. I wouldn't class paying £22 for pasta with ingredients under a fiver, in a hotel chain that isn't renowned for its food, as a 'treat' at all.

justasking111 · 14/04/2024 15:03

£51 for fish and chips. I'd rather have a nice meal in the holiday restaurant

NewName24 · 14/04/2024 15:05

YABU.
Your boyfriend is right.

ObliviousCoalmine · 14/04/2024 15:07

I wouldn't pay that to watch in a Hilton, but I also wouldn't take a Subway in as a replacement. I'd stop on the way to the airport/hotel somewhere better, have dinner/early dinner and then go to the hotel; with snacks for later if needs be.

ObliviousCoalmine · 14/04/2024 15:08

Watch? Eat. Eat in a Hilton...

TTPD · 14/04/2024 15:11

Yes? You might splash out a bit more on holiday, but it still matters.

That is completely reasonable of him.

You aren't unreasonable to want to spend the money a different way. But neither is he.

I'd agree with him quite frankly.

TeaandChoc222 · 14/04/2024 15:15

If its so important why dont you pay fir it?

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 14/04/2024 15:17

It's a rip off for what will probably be bog standard food imho.
I'm with him on this one.

BettyShagter · 14/04/2024 15:44

Shoxfordian · 14/04/2024 14:40

Are you also a football fan? That sounds shit otherwise

Why? It's 2 hours out of a whole week.

I spend longer than that away from my DH on holiday if I fancy going for a walk or a lie down.

LeaveTheClocksAlone · 14/04/2024 15:51

Nothing more unattractive than a tight arse

Deargodletitgo · 14/04/2024 15:53

Order a takeaway to be delivered, chill in room with a bottle of wine

Trulyme · 14/04/2024 15:57

There’s no way I’d pay £25pp on fish & chips.

Go to a proper chippy and get a decent meal for half that price.

Then use the rest of the money on another meal or trip.

Your boyfriend sounds sensible.

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 14/04/2024 16:03

We always stay in a airport hotel before we go away and have NEVER eaten in the hotel because it's shite! We always go to M&S and get sandwiches, pork pies, party foody bits and have a carpet picnic! It's nothing to do with money or being tight, well it is - I refuse to spend money on shit food! I agree with your boyfriend OP!

SiobhanSharpe · 14/04/2024 16:08

I'd see if I could find a nice pub nearby to eat in, prices are probably going to be lower than in an airport Hilton. Atmosphere and ambience would probably be nicer too.
(To be fair I used to belong to a Living Well leisure club at an airport Hilton and the food there was quite good. )

Luxell934 · 14/04/2024 16:14

Well it depends. Maybe he’s being unreasonable if he’s a high earner, not unreasonable at all though if money is tight and he’s having to unfortunately watch every penny.

That is exactly what I would do too!

£25 for fish and chips is ridiculous, and you are likely to order drinks with it which adds ££££

Could you not compromise by eating somewhere better value before arriving at the hotel

Loopytiles · 14/04/2024 16:40

Is the hotel stay even a ‘treat’? Eg it’s not a ‘treat’ if it is the most convenient and / or low cost option in order to get to your outward flight.

Youdontevengohere · 14/04/2024 16:41

I wouldn’t pay £25 for shit hotel fish and chips

StedeBonnet · 14/04/2024 16:42

He's not tight. Save the money for holiday.l meals. I wouldn't pay that for a fish and chips!
