To think my boyfriend is tight?

We go on holiday a week tomorrow
As a treat the night before we have booked a hotel at the airport.
I said we can get a meal in the restaurant the night before at hotel
He looked at prices and said he isn't paying that -and we will take a subway.
It's £25.50 each for fish and chips
Or around £22 for a carbonara

You're on holiday,money doesn't matter does it?
Aibu to think he is being tight ?

The fact he’s saying he will get a boat trip instead says money is tight, and if money is tight then it always matters, there is no magic money tree.

arethereanyleftatall · 14/04/2024 13:14

Isn't this less about whether you're tight or not and more about what your budget is?

Absolutely.
No way on earth would I pay over £50 for fish and chips for two, I’d much rather spend that when I got there. I don’t think he’s being tight at all, he just doesn’t want to throw cash at a mediocre meal.

StedeBonnet · 14/04/2024 16:46

I suppose I'm technically a high earner too, just looking at previous posts saying if he's a high earner he's tight. But they have no idea what his other expenses are. And being a high earner doesn't mean spunking money up the wall on £25 fish and chips is fine.

Riverlee · 14/04/2024 16:47

Can’t tell whether he is tight from this one example. What’s he like the rest of the time?

Sunnnybunny72 · 14/04/2024 16:59

He said 'we' will take a Subway.
Did he now?
What, like he's in charge?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 14/04/2024 17:40

ohlaohla · 14/04/2024 13:17

Well we haven't got a massive budget this holiday as it was last minute and not our main holiday so I guess saving money won't be a bad thing.
I think it's because we normally have a routine of meal in hotel etc
He's a Man U fan and they are playing next weekend so I think he's plan is to get drinks and just sit in room and watch the match

That's why then. I'm a football fans and would do the same.

NeverEnoughPants · 14/04/2024 17:41

There's got to be a compromise between seriously overpriced and disappointing fish and chips, and a sandwich.

I would be checking out just eat and googling for places close to the hotel to check what your options are. I'm sure you'll come up with something that will suit you both!

(If I had to choose one or the other though, I would go for the Subway)

fluffycloudsfloatingpast · 14/04/2024 17:43

I'm with him and I normally like to push the boat out.

PoppyCherryDog · 14/04/2024 17:46

I’m with your partner in this one. Better to spend the money on the actual holiday. I don’t really think Hilton hotel airport food is even that great….

stormonasummerseve · 14/04/2024 17:54

Airport Hilton's are crap. I'm joining the chorus of people agreeing with him and would say deliveroo yourself something !

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 14/04/2024 17:56

ohlaohla · 14/04/2024 13:11

He says he would rather use the money and go on a boat trip on holiday or put it towards a nice meal on holiday rather than pay for overpriced food
Just put a downer on it

I'm with your boyfriend on this one.

Neither of you is right or wrong......just different perspectives

MILTOBE · 14/04/2024 17:58

What are you meant to do while he's watching TV in the bedroom?

You’re being completely unreasonable.

the best part of £50 for basic meals like that in a Hilton is a rip off and well you know it.

AVFC4eva · 14/04/2024 18:00

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 14/04/2024 13:11

I bet the carbonara will be microwaved!

I think it's expensive to be honest but I think a Subway is a bit extreme!

BananaLambo · 14/04/2024 18:06

Airport hotel meals are a bit crappy. I’d get up to the hotel early and go out for dinner,or even get a Deliveroo from Wagamama or Pizza Express or something like that.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/04/2024 18:06

I'm with your BF on this one
Those prices are a rip off because they have a captive audience
I would either order a just eat or nip to a nearby eatery
There is a middle ground between extortionate fish and chips and a subway

AmiShitsaline · 14/04/2024 18:13

Get the subway with a 12 pack of cookies, now that’s a treat!!

BurbageBrook · 14/04/2024 18:21

I think he's right, airport Hilton food will not be great for the price! Better to have a McDonalds and save the money for another day on holiday.

BurbageBrook · 14/04/2024 18:22

Or actually why not compromise with a takeaway Deliveroo pizza or Chinese etc? More fun than a Subway but not such a rip off.

MissingMoominMamma · 14/04/2024 18:22

I promise you’ll enjoy the boat trip more!

TunaCrunchy · 14/04/2024 18:23

I would prefer the boat trip.

honeylulu · 14/04/2024 18:28

Are you expecting him to pay?
Or is it coming out of your joint holiday budget? (Though your "money doesn't matter" comment suggests no budget!)
If you feel strongly about it why don't you pay? Or at least offer to split? If you don't want to does it mean you're tight?

Or as others have said why don't you go and have (and pay for) the restaurant meal you want and leave him to his subway and TV match in the room?

WaitingfortheTardis · 14/04/2024 18:31

Surely there's a middle ground? There may well be somewhere that's cheaper near the hotel - there will definitely be something better than subway anyway!

YourRedPombear · 14/04/2024 18:42

I agree with the BF no way would i pay £25 for fish and chips in a hotel when the food will just be mediocre. I wouldnt say he was tight just has different priorities, rather spend it on crappy food you can use that for something else worthwhile.

Allfur · 14/04/2024 18:53

I think it's tight and neggy - it's meant to be a holiday
