To think my boyfriend is tight?

We go on holiday a week tomorrow
As a treat the night before we have booked a hotel at the airport.
I said we can get a meal in the restaurant the night before at hotel
He looked at prices and said he isn't paying that -and we will take a subway.
It's £25.50 each for fish and chips
Or around £22 for a carbonara

You're on holiday,money doesn't matter does it?
Aibu to think he is being tight ?

I think it's tight and neggy - it's meant to be a holiday

Being a holiday doesn’t mean people can magic up extra cash that they haven’t got! If it’s the choice between mediocre, overpriced fish and chips in an airport hotel or a nice meal while on holiday… then I’d take the nice meal while on holiday any day.

He says he would rather use the money and go on a boat trip on holiday or put it towards a nice meal on holiday rather than pay for overpriced food
Just put a downer on it

He's completely right.

Thinking "money doesn't matter" just because you're on holiday, and thinking that airport hotel food is worth those prices, is honestly a bit stupid, and I would think worse of anyone who thought otherwise. I actually don't think I could be in a relationship with someone who sulked over not getting £25 hotel fish and chips.

I never understand why the pejorative "tight" is thrown around so much on MN; I'd far rather have a partner who was sensible with money and had a good sense of what value for money is. I enjoy splashing out on things that are worth it to me, but overpriced mediocrity boils my piss because it's such a scam. And I'd also need a partner with the discernment and taste to know that quality isn't always correlated to price tag.

And in any case he isn't even averse to spending money! He's up for a boat trip and (much nicer) meals out on holiday. Sounds like he knows what's actually worth spending money on and what isn't.

Does being on holiday magic up more money in my bank account? God if only.

(In fact, I'd say hotel food, even on holiday, is almost never as good as food in local restaurants. I stayed in a four-star hotel in Italy for work last year and the one meal I had in the hotel was 100 x worse (while being triple the price) than the ones I had in the surrounding trattorias.)

Unless money is literally never an issue then yes, money does still matter on holiday and in any other scenario. Your boyfriend is likely just more frugal a character than you – calling him ‘tight’ is quite disrespectful or balking at £25 for a single meal. Most people would balk at that price considering the state of the economy.

For reference, I say this as someone who is a bit of a ‘spender’ with a far more frugal DH.

I stayed overnight at Gatwick in Premier Inn and cost me best part of £32 for burger meal with a beer. Never again - later in the year when I was back I just brought some nice snacks out of M&S and took some wine. Save your money and its not tight to do so.

Completely agree.
Any prospective partner showing that he appreciated value for money / was sensible with money / liked a bargain would be getting plus points from me for their financial sense.
I couldn't live with a partner who was happy to piss money up the wall rather than giving spending a bit of considered perspective.

"Nothing more unattractive than a tight arse"

Yes there is. Someone who spunks money up the wall on shit food when they're on a budget for no good reason.

NeverEnoughPants · 14/04/2024 22:26

Yup.

Imo the boyfriend doesn't sound tight. He sounds sensible.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/04/2024 22:39

Airport hotel food is usually abominable.

Anywherebuthere · 14/04/2024 22:47

Budget still matters on holiday. You should both agree on how much. I don't see the point in pay rip off prices. It's not being tight but prioritising what I would rather spend on.

Pricier hotels don't necessary mean better food.

Can a compromise be reached? You have the meal you want and he sticks with a drink or something to keep you company?
