To hate having someone lurk while I cook

Why does my DH appear just at the trickiest bit of the cooking? What does he want? Is he trying to learn how to cook by watching (doubt it), or is he just trying to see how much longer it will be. I can't stand it.

Or steal a but before you've finished or even worse serving up? Definitely infuriating!

xsquared · 13/04/2024 18:57

I hate lurking too, especially of it's a visitor wanting to make a cup of tea or just standing and asking questions about what I'm making.

In your position, I would just give dh a boring job like lay the table, tidy up the kitchen or do the dishes.

Digestive28 · 13/04/2024 18:59

Dawn O’Porter spoke on a podcast (?maybe how to fail) saying the best gift her husband bought her was a red rope to put across the kitchen when she is cooking, especially for dinner parties. Keeps everyone out!

LMMuffet · 13/04/2024 18:59

Me too! I don’t even like it when I’m cooking for a lot of people and someone comes to the kitchen to “keep me company.” I don’t need company!

Cherrysoup · 13/04/2024 19:00

This would drive me crazy. I like being able to float between cooker/fridge/sink without tripping over someone. Tell him to sod off til you want a hand dishing up.

nadine90 · 13/04/2024 19:02

I hate anyone in the kitchen while I’m cooking. When you see these property shows and they want a big open plan kitchen family room so they can be involved in conversation - I just don’t get it! Nope, leave me with my one person wide galley kitchen so I’ve a good excuse to kick people out x

BobbyBiscuits · 13/04/2024 19:02

I don't mind lurkers that much, as long as they don't try and 'advise' me how to cook the bloody meal. Haha. My DH can't cook if someone else is in the room. I've worked in a commercial kitchen before and like talking while I cook so I kind of like some company, but they'd better be prepared to take command from the head chef, ie me!

AhBiscuits · 13/04/2024 19:04

My DH's hobby is standing in front of cupboards I need to open or trying to clean the kitchen around me while I'm using it.
Just fuck off.

Greywitch2 · 13/04/2024 19:04

I don't mind a lurker. I don't mind a bit of conversation.

But spoony fuckers are another matter altogether.

shellyleppard · 13/04/2024 19:06

That drives me absolutely batshit!!!!! I have a small kitchen so if anyone is lurking I'm going to trip over them!!! They always stand where I need to go 🤣🤣🤣 only safe place is by the back door 🤣🤣

Northernsouloldies · 13/04/2024 19:16

Get out of my kitchen!!.

Yes if he asked if he could help I wouldn't mind

My dad does this when he visits
Open plan kitchen to living room. I'm cooking. Where does he stand?
In front of the cutlery/knife drawer Confused

Yanbu! Yanbu at all! When I see people saying on programmes like Escape To The Country that they want a big kitchen to the be the heart of the home I just shrink in horror. I want the kitchen to be a utility room that can be shut off from the rest of the house for one person at a time to work in in peace and quiet, without everyone milling around and sitting at the dining table, just watching and waiting.

In my next house I will be seeking out a small kitchen. Maybe I'll be able to snap up a bargain that no one else wants.

theeyeofdoe · 13/04/2024 19:42

I don’t mind people in the kitchen sitting down, I just don’t like people in the area between the sink/work surface/oven.

they are always in the way.

my MIL and I have got on less well each year. I’ve tried everything, but I actually now do have physical barrier to prevent her getting into the cooking space.

Barney16 · 13/04/2024 19:45

My DP does this. Always at the trickiest bit, important to say I hate cooking and do it best (still not v good) when unobserved. He pops up with a cheery "can I help" and it's a bloody wonder that I haven't as of yet, stabbed him. It is the most irritating thing. I sympathise.

Sunseed · 13/04/2024 19:45

My DH has a knack of appearing while I'm chopping veg..... and backs off at speed as I'm armed with a large knife and giving him "the look"!!!

SOxon · 13/04/2024 19:51

My kitchen! my kitchen! (Gremlins1984) ugh horrible

SOxon · 13/04/2024 19:53

Northernsouloldies · 13/04/2024 19:16

I don't think I'd mind a can I help? At the very start but not near the end. That would feel like they are trying to hurry things up

Yes I love my "galley" kitchen. Until someone else tries to stand in it!

If anybody - DH or children - comes into the kitchen while I’m cooking I down tools, turn everything off, and go sit down. I don’t start cooking again until they’re out. It only took a few times for them to stop bloody doing it.

FusilliNom · 13/04/2024 20:03

It's like he thinks it's the same as watching masterchef or something only with a really bad cook

OP posts:
suburburban · 13/04/2024 20:03

I hate it too. Wish I could shut door on open plan back of house

Nonsense about chatting to guests whilst cooking, no go away please
