Would you have turned her away?

Friend and I were discussing an event that happened back in 1994, when we were 15 yrs old.

We were on a minibus full of teenagers coming home from a youth group week away. The journey home was 5 hours. Friend had vocalised for 30 mins that she needed the loo, and I could tell she was close to having an accident. There were no toilets we could see on the route and the youth leader driving didn't want to hunt around for loos. He just wanted to get us all home.

I persuaded the driver to pull into a residential road, as I was going to knock doors until someone let my friend use their loo. The first person I asked let us in straight away after I explained the situation. It was a man with young children. He happily let her pee in his downstairs loo, then we went back on the bus. I didn't even get his address to write a thank you card after the event.

Would you have let her in to use the loo?

YABU: I wouldn't let a teenage stranger in my house.

YANBU: If you gotta go, you gotta go. In you come teenager.

I probably would have but I’d have found it very strange!

StormingNorman · 10/04/2024 20:45

I wouldn’t be happy about it but I wouldn’t let someone piss themselves.

Namerchanger1 · 10/04/2024 20:46

Option C, I would have had a wee on the verge instead of knocking on the door of a stranger

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/04/2024 20:46

Not in this house.

If I had a house with a downstairs toilet right by the front door, yes.

XenoBitch · 10/04/2024 20:47

No, I would not have let her in.
I have been in dire straits when caught short. I would pee in a bush out of view of anyone.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 10/04/2024 20:48

I don’t think I could go in those circumstances! I’d have to go and find a bush 🙈🤣
I’d let someone I suppose, I would find it very odd though.

ManchesterBeatrice · 10/04/2024 20:48

I wouldn't answer the door.

HappyMuma · 10/04/2024 20:49

I would but I have a downstairs toilet by the front door. I probably wouldn’t if I only had and upstairs bathroom

Hiddenmnetter · 10/04/2024 20:49

I would- but I guess I would consider the wider implications- what I could be accused of, what other witnesses there were. I don’t want someone to suffer that indignity but I wouldn’t want to get accused of something nefarious.

i suppose a bush wee is always a viable choice. If they needed a poo, then I guess there is value in things like a ring doorbell that can log the time someone came in and out.

Ponoka7 · 10/04/2024 20:51

Back then, yes. Here in Liverpool you could knock on someone's door and ask for a child to use the toilet. Then people started using children as decoys while they stole.

kellion · 10/04/2024 20:52

No, I wouldn't have even answered the door.

If I desperately needed to wee I wouldn't have knocked on a stranger's door, I would have just weed behind a bush. I would have been a bit unimpressed with friend for needing the loo during a 5 hour journey anyway, I've been on 9 hour flights and not needed the loo.

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/04/2024 20:52

I have let someone in under similar circumstances when we were staying at a family member’s place during our building work. In fairness though it’s an unusual property and they were trying to wee in the bush in the front thinking it was a closed office and they hadn’t realised I was there and also it was a pregnant woman so pretty non threatening.

IncompleteSenten · 10/04/2024 20:53

It would depend on my assessment of the situation.

I've let delivery people use my loo (if there's an Amazon driver WhatsApp group I bet my address is on their Lets You Use The Loo list 🤣,) workmen obviously, one time the postie needed a pee.

I've also said no to someone I got a bad feeling about.

I don't think you can say an absolute never or an always. You have to make individual judgements.

A clearly desperate teen probably yes I would have let her in. Especially if I could see the minibus.

Dacadactyl · 10/04/2024 20:55

Yeah I would let her in if I could see the coach.

I've knocked on a door while out for a walk with the kids to ask someone to fill up a water bottle.

LostGhost · 10/04/2024 20:55

Isn't there some sort of law in Scotland that you legally have to let someone use the loo if they knock?

But no I wouldn't let a stranger into my house

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 10/04/2024 20:57

Of course I would have done ! Shame on the youth leader tho for not accompanying her ! as surely there was more than one adult on the mini bus with you all ?

Greatbritish · 10/04/2024 20:57

She's disabled @kellion . Back then "invisible disabilities" weren't a thing.

Because of her multiple issues, peeing in a bush meant she'd have covered herself in pee. Can you imagine getting back on a bus full of teens covered in your own piss?

Apparently so.

RandomUsernameHere · 10/04/2024 20:57

Teenage girl, definitely. Would be more cautious if it was an adult, especially a man.

itsgettingweird · 10/04/2024 20:59

I would have.

But then I have a terrible bladder and would hope someone would do the same for me!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 10/04/2024 20:59

I would, teenage girl, clearly desperate and mini bus in view absolutely.

I wouldn't let everyone in and am highly suspicious by nature but yes.

I have endo bladder and a friend has kidney issues - sometimes when you have to do, you have to do.

What do people think would happen if they let a teenager in? Theft? Murder? Stranger never leaves?

itsgettingweird · 10/04/2024 20:59

But I e also let delivery drivers use my loo etc.

It's a loo. If you've gotta go ..... Grin

Riverlee · 10/04/2024 20:59

On the basis that there was an obvious youth minibus nearby, I would have done . Maybe not if the teenager was by herself and I was by myself. Toilet is near front door which makes it easier.

BlancheSaysYes · 10/04/2024 21:00

I would let anyone in to use my loo if they were desperate.

BettyShagter · 10/04/2024 21:01

No, probably not.

But why would you want to get the address anyway, and write a thank you card because someone else had a pee in his house?
