Tony’s chocolonely egg is not an egg

Aibu to feel ripped off. Square box makes you think you have a normal egg. Actually you have a flat egg. An ellipse. A squished egg. All the pictures are face on so you don’t get to see the profile from the side, which would show it’s not a proper egg.

Kids asked why they didn’t get proper eggs.

@WittiestUsernameEver Hahaha cross-post.

They are saying they're the only ethical brand!?

Interesting. I subscribe to Ethical Consumer magazine who rate companies on various ethical criteria and I'm pretty sure other brands did well on various aspects... Would have to retrieve the article to offer anything more specific than that though.

Choco... lonely

Because they 'lonely' in the market by being very ethical.

Oh right! I was thinking it was choc-olonely or cho-colonely 😆

Pheeeeebs · 01/04/2024 08:36

All I see is a colon in the name. A brown food stuff with the word colon in it, doesn’t appeal to me so never tried it. 😀

This guy opens Tony's Easter Egg on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yIU-rCK3Ovg🥚 Looks like a normal Easter egg to me 🤷‍♀️ I think your kids are a bit spoiled to complain "it's not a proper Easter egg" 🐣 It's a big small for the packaging but that's about it.

I may have seemed a bit ungrateful yesterday when I was exclaiming "It's not an egg!" I mean, it wasn't even displayed to look like an egg, as it was inside the box.

What about the advent calendar?

For me it was the huge packaging for the tiny amount of chocolate inside. Seemed unethical in itself

SapphireSeptember · 01/04/2024 10:38

I had the advent calendar the Christmas before last, and was pissed off at the empty window. (Luckily I had a Hotel Chocolat one as well that made up for it )

CantFindMyMarbles · 01/04/2024 17:55

My daughter has this egg and it’s delicious.
the weight is clearly available on the box. Shape makes no difference.

Life’s tough at the minute hey.

Thorntons eggs are the same. I assumed it was a cost cutting exercise so the companies make more profit.

I haven’t opened a cadburys one yet but I have a £1.50 in the house.

I said earlier today that I won’t buy a thorntons one again, it was horrid chocolate and flat. If cadburys annd Tony’s are the same then it is likely to be cost cutting!

Really? My Thorntons one is also flat and we have assumed it is melted and not as it was supposed to be. Can you post a pic? My partner was really upset and is emailing them 😂😂😂😂

PoochiesPinkEars · 01/04/2024 18:15

Is it cost cutting, or space saving? What weight of chocolate was the egg?
After all what's lost is the larger hollow... So how is it less chocolate?
Maybe it just means the box is half the width... So twice as many eggs in one truck... Less transport costs and less fuel used for the same number of eggs? Better for the environment if so.

Ooh, I would definitely be interested in the article! I’ve come across Ethical Consumer, but not subscribed as am utterly broke at the moment. Have you found it to be useful?

NoisySnail · 01/04/2024 18:56

If the shape makes no difference, why are they not upfront about it on the packaging?
Because lots of people do care.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 01/04/2024 19:13

Cadbury's big fruit & nut egg has been the best this year. Followed by Toblerone big egg which was sold out in most places.

Try them next time OP.

Used to enjoy Tony's but realised I was forcing myself to enjoy it fir the ethics.

GHSP · 01/04/2024 19:29

No, the packaging isn’t flat. The box isn’t see-through so there is nothing to indicate this isn’t a regular egg. If they had shrunk the box to cut down on transport costs it’d be a great example of actually being ethical rather than simply virtue signalling.

Why can't a kid have a Tonys chocolatey. I didn't think they were particularly adult-y.

They were with all the usual eggs and stuff in the shops.

HauntedPencil · 01/04/2024 19:59

I would imagine weight wise maybe it isn't too far off a normal egg but I agree I want an egg an actual egg shaped egg. I would also feel egg-revived tbh.

Lunchclub · 01/04/2024 20:02

YABU to buy Tony’s Chocolonely and expect it to be anything else other than disappointing.

It tastes like overpriced advent calendar puke chocolate. Cannot understand why anyone buys it!

Plenty of free info elsewhere, there is an annual chocolate scorecard. Tony’s is by by far far more ethical than any of the big brands and supermarkets. Tony’s isn’t just marketing spin, they genuinely have good work behind it. Most of the big brands (cadburys etc) can’t be called ethical at all. Disclosure - I work in the area of ethical trade, for a charity.

honesteasterbunny · 01/04/2024 20:26

And the reason Tony’s is more expensive is because the farmers are getting paid properly, so that they don’t resort to bringing their children to the farms and so on. The cost reflects the reality of what a living income in cocoa is.

Nail on the head.

Take away the hipster packaging, intriguing name, annoying thought-provoking mosaic design, knowledge of the great ethics, and I reckon it wouldn’t actually fare that well in the blindfolded taste test with many people - especially if their descriptions are read first. A few times I’ve thought to myself “Eh? Where’s the hazelnut paste? [or insert another apparently missing ingredient from the amazing description]?” On a few occasions, I’ve bought a new bar and been annoyed at myself for wasting calories on it, vowed to never buy another but a new flavour has convinced me otherwise, repeat.

Mammaonthemoney · 01/04/2024 21:51

Also their whole spiel is about being anti slavery but they still buy their chocolate from the Ivory Coast, which is THE WORST for slavery and child labour. Their answer to that is that they should be in it to be able to change it, which is pretty much what Cadburys said forever when they worked with cocoa plantation owners that had slave labour. Greenwashing at its finest.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 01/04/2024 22:52

Precisely @Namedilemma6 re' packaging and the disappointment when eating it.
I'd been going on about it to everyone who would listen about how good it was, until one year when I received masses of it as stocking fillers for Christmas/ birthday and realised I'd been lying to myself.

I'm back onto Cadbury's even though I'd vowed never to touch it again after the American sale.

Peaches1407 · 02/04/2024 06:48

I do enjoy a Tony's. Hate Cadburys etc, there is no taste of cocoa. Lindt is lovely too.

askmenow · 02/04/2024 11:49

Fullfatandfortyplus · 31/03/2024 19:32

Nah don’t buy them ever as they don’t use ‘advent’ in their advent calendars or ‘Easter’ on their eggs and it annoys me.

Exactly this... Christian celebrations wiped out! Only ever bought this chocolate one and it's vastly overrated.

Did anyone try the Guerlain shells egg?
