Tony’s chocolonely egg is not an egg

Aibu to feel ripped off. Square box makes you think you have a normal egg. Actually you have a flat egg. An ellipse. A squished egg. All the pictures are face on so you don’t get to see the profile from the side, which would show it’s not a proper egg.

Kids asked why they didn’t get proper eggs.

The small £1.50 Cadbury eggs for little kids are oval shaped flattish hollow eggs as well, it's not just Tony's that does this.

GoonieGang · 31/03/2024 14:53

Oh blimey. I thought it was a Terry’s Chocolate typo 🤦‍♀️
Had to google it as everyone seemed to know it wasn’t a typo 🫣
Never heard of Tony’s chocolate until today.

Notimeforaname · 31/03/2024 13:14

It should say it on the box op.
Try to pick them up a real egg today or tomorrow to make up for it.

Or tell them to eat their chocolate and get over it

I've never tried this chocolate! Is it any good?

I don't get the hype but my dd loves it.

Myopicglass · 31/03/2024 15:00

Thorntons eggs are the same. I assumed it was a cost cutting exercise so the companies make more profit.

I haven’t opened a cadburys one yet but I have a £1.50 in the house.

I said earlier today that I won’t buy a thorntons one again, it was horrid chocolate and flat. If cadburys annd Tony’s are the same then it is likely to be cost cutting!

Ooops…

I almost ordered this to give all my nieces and nephews but then I saw them in the supermarket and saw how tiny they are.

I agree.

Theothername · 31/03/2024 15:06

Cadbury’s eggs were noticeably a bit flatter than they should be. Not impressed at the shrinkflation.

ALDI chocolate is better. It is marketing over substance.

Overcontemplating · 31/03/2024 15:09

My child also asked for it, it's the chocolate I buy so I guess that's why they asked for it over other "kid" aimed eggs. They opened it this morning said oh and put it back in the box. I'm not sure what that means but they've not moaned

Mrssheepskin · 31/03/2024 15:10

Looks alright to me. Just get them a cheap one next time if they’re complaining.

Ihatemondays1962 · 31/03/2024 15:11

It looks fine to me too, I was expecting something worse from your description.

Shellingbynight · 31/03/2024 15:12

I saw someone on TV showing the shape of the Tony's egg. If I had bought one I would have felt ripped off. An Easter egg should at least be egg shaped.

Chocolate is so much a matter of personal taste though, it's not that any brand is good or bad as you can see from he mixed answers. It s too expensive for me to try and risk not liking it or worse really liking it and it getting very expensive 😁

I dont get what's wrong with a flatter egg though, you have to break them up to eat them whatever shape they are

NoisySnail · 31/03/2024 15:23

@shoppingshamed Good chocolate is commonly expected to have a higher cocoa content, no palm oil and less sugar. Tonys does fine in ingredients but has 32% cocoa solids. Decent chocolate in ALDI has the same or more for much less cost. Even their very basic chocolate which is very cheap has 30% cocoa solids.
So there is nothing wrong with Tony's, it is just very expensive for the quality.

Sparklesocks · 31/03/2024 15:25

Oh yes I saw the watchdog piece on this on the one show 😄

they said it was to keep their trademark texture and it wouldn’t have worked on the traditional egg shape, but they claim there’s the same amount of chocolate as a normal egg

NoisySnail · 31/03/2024 15:30

@shoppingshamed because eggs are round. Otherwise why not just buy a bar of chocolate? Much cheaper. People buy it for the shape.

Mustreadabook · 31/03/2024 15:33

Yes I was a bit shocked when i opened mine! Obviously Easter eggs are very little chocolate for the size of the box anyway because they are hollow ( and they dont put the sweets inside any more which is wrong). But this one doesn’t fill the box at all, huge box, flat fallen over ‘egg’. But I expect not a lot less chocolate than a round one. If they wanted to be green and ethical a smaller box to save on shipping would have been better.

To be honest, this was more what I was expecting OP's egg to be. I can't see the problem with the Tony's egg?

You're not missing anything, vastly overrated.

I misunderstood, I thought the question was about did it taste good rater than the technicalities of the ingredients, I assume that information. Is available online

As a chocolate heathen I couldnt care less about the %ages as long as I like the taste 😀

Surely eggs are 🥚 shaped not round 😁

I think people buy Easter eggs for a variety of reasons not simply the shape as you say they aren't the cheapest way to buy chocolate

NoisySnail · 31/03/2024 15:42

@shoppingshamed I get your point. It does as someone says taste like an old fashioned yorkie - so before they put palm oil in. If you think that is worth the high price go ahead. I would happily eat it, but I spend my money buying chocolate from other places instead.
