Tony’s chocolonely egg is not an egg

Aibu to feel ripped off. Square box makes you think you have a normal egg. Actually you have a flat egg. An ellipse. A squished egg. All the pictures are face on so you don’t get to see the profile from the side, which would show it’s not a proper egg.

Kids asked why they didn’t get proper eggs.

I noticed the Thornton egg was rather small and flat compared to the packaging, it also made a big deal of having 8 chocolates with it. Shrinkflation.

SauronsArsehole · 31/03/2024 20:56

I once opened an egg and it it looked like the eye of Sauron only more arsehole-y and that’s how my user named was formed.

It’s nothing to do with palm oil why Tony’s is more ethical. All the big brands don’t have traceability of where their cocoa comes from - they’ll claim they do but they don’t really, it’s a spin of certain data, and all the big ones have a huge reliance on child labour, because their purchasing practices don’t enable families to earn a living income. Tony pays a premium on top of the Fairtrade premium to enable a living income and tackle child labour more effectively. though any slightly bigger cocoa company will pretty much always have some child labour.

lots of info here for comparing companies:

They had an empty window with a preachy comment inside.

You’d already bought the ‘good guys’ chocolate and probably read the back. You don’t need your little kids opening up a window to a lecture over breakfast.

I thing they did out two chocolates in a subsequent window though.

Oh, that.

I think that the double-filled window was the previous one, which probably said something about whether to eat both in one go or save one for later. I forget.

I've never tried this chocolate! Is it any good?

Not nice. We binned the rest of the box. Was a gift to dd and no one liked it.

Just don't put your finger in it!

Montezuma's and chococo have gone down an absolute storm in our house this year. Also no palm oil.
Also, taste much better than Tony's (which I find pretty tasteless personally, tastes of sugar and fat but not cocoa).

So deffo recommend for next year.

I was very underwhelmed with it. Tastes like 1980s Yorkie.

Exactly this. I quite like the orange one with salted caramel but I recently bought a new one that supposedly had some kind of paste. Hazelnut I think. So I was so excited about a praline taste and texture. Well, let’s just say the factory apparently didn’t add it to my bar which was tooth-crackingly rock hard as usual with the odd fleck of something other than chocolate. I really think the brand is overrated. The messaging is obviously great but I also find it irritating I can’t break it into a neat strip, esp when calorie counting. (I know it’s designed like this to represent inequality.)

Can you tell I’m hormonal?

I’m sick of Toneys.

Have all the ethics you like, but when your chocolate is crazy-paved, you can’t break it into bits and it spoils the experience.

I have recently thrown some away because I just couldn’t be arsed with it, and that’s unheard of.

Yes! I agree! I don't buy the bars for this reason- I want even squares in straight lines!

CornflakeGirl18 · 31/03/2024 22:23

I bought one for DP so after reading this I got him to open it just to see what it was like! I'm more disappointed by what seems to be excessive packaging for a flattened egg.

My 9-year-old loves Toney's chocolates. I think he's been radicalised watching a few YouTube videos or adverts about illegal child labour. He's definitely been learning about palm oil and orangutans in school.

I'm glad I got him the bag of small eggs along with a normal cadburys one, rather than the large Toney's egg he really wanted. He relented when I pointed out the large price difference in the price per 100g on the SEL.

Because more ethical stuff more. Cheap is cheap for a reason.

Onelovelyone · 31/03/2024 22:28

It’s really nice chocolate and the ethics behind the brand are great too. My favourite is the milk chocolate - try it!

Derbyshiresoloparentwingingit · 31/03/2024 22:32

I absolutely love Tony's chocolate and am fussy about food in general! I much prefer it to the too sweet Cadburys and too sickly lindt for example. I tend to buy it when on special offer and hide it from my kids :D

MammaTill2Pojkar · 31/03/2024 22:33

Looks fine to me, it's still egg shaped and hollow 💁

mangobananasmooothie · 31/03/2024 22:39

Dd asked for one of these, such a rip off - huge box and the egg is really small and flat plus a few tiny eggs at the bottom. I was disappointed but she loves the story behind it - ethical chocolate and all that so can't fault that.

TheIceQween · 31/03/2024 13:21

Ooops…

I got those and was SO disappointed! Thought they tasted awful and binned half of them.

I bought it for myself and enjoyed it all!

I really love their chocolate especially the one with bits of caramel

No, it tastes like cooking chocolate

Mrssheepskin · 01/04/2024 07:15

I’m still trying to figure out how to pronounce the name of it and what it means!?

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 01/04/2024 07:26

Seems fine it's hollow innit

Choco... lonely

Because they 'lonely' in the market by being very ethical.

PoochiesPinkEars · 01/04/2024 08:24

I wonder why they called it chocolony (sp?), it conjures up images of someone all sad and lonely crying into their chocolate for me. 🤣
