Why is Spam so expensive??

wubwubwub · 19/03/2024 15:36

It's 3.50 a tin!

Seems expensive for what it is, no?

And yes i know

  • it's crap
  • it's unhealthy
  • it's not organic hand reared lentils
  • it's salty
  • it's fatty

Don't worry my kids don't eat it... I'm not overweight...I'm not eating it every meal... I'm not at risk of diabetes or high blood pressure yada yada yada

It is an occasional thing, mostly for a treat of Spam Misubi.

yeah you just slice it out of the tin, mmmm

There's a technique isn't there. Grip a fork in your right hand, deploy a semi circular downward twisting motion. Ooooh yeah baby.

NotAnotherRoyalThread · 19/03/2024 16:35

£3.50 for that congealed pigs arse?!

You couldn’t PAY ME to eat it! Good God!

The best thing about leaving primary school in the 1980s was never having to face the twin abominations of SPAM and SMASH ever, ever again!

This is news to me, as I've been eating spam straight out the tin for the past 52 years.

Not continuously for those 52 years you understand.

But raw spam, yes, delicious raw or cooked.

I think if you had eaten spam continuously for 52 years, you wouldn't be here to make the post, but interesting, I shall ask him re raw spam when he gets in from work.

It's revolting - but was cheaper in home bargains last Sunday for the fans. Also had fray bentos pies and super noodles ... it's like a step back in time that shop (and is good for light bulbs, glue and shower puffs!)

You are SO wrong! Fried Spam, with crunchy edges........smells so good when it's cooking and oh so tasty! 😋😋😋 Food of the Gods! 😀

Portu · 19/03/2024 16:36

Iceland and Morrisons sell Spam fritters. I was in raptures of delight when I discovered this. My delight became a heightened state of ecstasy when DCs declared them "shit", like the fucking snowflakes they are, so I could eat them all myself. All. Of. Them.

swiveleyedconspiracyloon · 19/03/2024 16:36

now i want some Spam....

murasaki · 19/03/2024 16:37

Semolina with the skin used to make me barf as a child. See also blancmange. I'm not sure if that still even exists and if it does, it shouldn't.

I was musing with my friend that you never see blacmange anymore. Definitely not the bright pink, suspiciously resilient stuff we used to get for school dinners.

Where did the blacmange go?

Hell, I hope.

Lollypop701 · 19/03/2024 16:40

I quite like tinned rice pudding… it’s definitely not on same lines as spam (and if it is really unhealthy please don’t tell me)

In my pantry 😁😁😁

You can still get the Pearce Duff sachets on line.

Thanks! Asda stocks it too apparently!

My mum used to have a plastic blacmange mould shaped like a rabbit.

ginasevern · 19/03/2024 16:46

@murasaki

"But you wouldn't eat spam straight from the tin without cooking it, right?"

Spam is a ready cooked product, just like pork luncheon meat, corned beef or tinned ham but you can also cook with it, especially fried.

Pixiesgirl · 19/03/2024 16:46

Blancmange is bloody weird and belongs in the history books. My kids would defend supernoodles though, think they are practising for when they are students.

Makes sense, but I've never heard of anyone eating it 'raw' as it were.

Pixiesgirl · 19/03/2024 16:48

Did everyone have the rabbit mould? I only ever remember it for jelly and it hardly ever came out looking like a rabbit

YES my mum had it

It is expensive because it's made by the Knights of the Round Table, who eat ham and jam and spam a lot, and their operational overheads are high because they need to buy armour and coconut shells to imitate horses hooves.

Also because it's delicious.

Feeling so rubbish today but this has made me smile 😊

GoodOldEmmaNess · 19/03/2024 16:49

Why is Spam so expensive?

Cos it's filtered.
(I'll get me coat.)

murasaki · 19/03/2024 16:49

Mine too. Shudder at the deformed mixamatosis rabbit milky badness that came out of it.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/03/2024 16:50

Ooh, semolina! I also love a ground rice pudding, baked in the oven, but I haven't seen ground rice anywhere lately.

mentallyilltotallychill · 19/03/2024 16:53

Loveeeeee spam on crispy rolls with cucumber, but the price!!! I agree. - maybe because its a well known brand, like how branded cereals have shot up. My son cringes every time i get a tin and wont touch it, But to be fair i used to when my grandparents did to.

i end up getting the shops own version but its just not the same😭

Davros · 19/03/2024 16:53

@Menomeno but I'm saving up for some Angel Delight and Smash

Where can I buy the butterscotch one. please?

DP has arrived from work and informed that it's the middle classes fault for jumping on the povvo food bandwagon (he says he is northen povvo so please let this one go) and that is why his beloved spam is so expensive. He would also like to use the comparison of Peruvians and quinoa.

I may be laughing at him, although he may have a tiny point if I can be bothered to find my microscope.
