Why is Spam so expensive??

wubwubwub · 19/03/2024 15:36

It's 3.50 a tin!

Seems expensive for what it is, no?

And yes i know

  • it's crap
  • it's unhealthy
  • it's not organic hand reared lentils
  • it's salty
  • it's fatty

Don't worry my kids don't eat it... I'm not overweight...I'm not eating it every meal... I'm not at risk of diabetes or high blood pressure yada yada yada

It is an occasional thing, mostly for a treat of Spam Misubi.

Spam is good for frying over a fire when camping - can’t get squashed in your pack, and doesn’t need refrigerating.

And yes, we also had the rabbit blancmange mould. I now use one shaped like a Victorian jelly mould.

MrsHamlet · 19/03/2024 17:22

Spam is extremely popular in Hawaii where you find it in sushi.

Where can I buy the butterscotch one. please?

I may also have some Angel Delight in my retro pantry - bought from Morrisons.

Tesco

I ate fried a sort of fried spam with egg and beans in our AI hotel, I don't think it was aimed at the Brits.

dottiedodah · 19/03/2024 17:32

Murasaki the spam is more dense and came in a tin .luncheon meat sliced and less heavy I think

Did everyone have the rabbit mould? I only ever remember it for jelly and it hardly ever came out looking like a rabbit

I still have one. And my youngest is 22 😃

I also still have the Teletubby toast cutter.

Yes I should get rid of them but I'm emotionally attached for some reason. Not once did a firm rabbit ever descend from it. Now I'm thinking about it it's probably still here as I don't want it getting the better of me. I will attempt a rabbit jelly or blancmange sometime.

I still eat semolina. It's great with a spoon of jam stirred in.

I remember reading some time ago that in places like Korea and The Philippines Spam is still popular - presumably a legacy of American influences from WW2.

Our Farmfoods does stuffed Spam breaded things which my fussy teen loves. It's cheese stuffed ones I get but I think they also do curry ones. A bit like chicken kyivs but with Spam instead.

SocksAndTheCity · 19/03/2024 17:54

Now I want spam and chips, or just cold spam out of the tin. Thank God I always have Angel Delight in.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/03/2024 18:03

Makes a great sandwich. Used to really like the M&S wafer thin chopped ham and pork, but that disappeared off the shelves years ago, and this is the closest substitute I can find. Don't have it frequently, but when I do it hits the spot.

LlynTegid · 19/03/2024 18:05

Apparently it might not have continued being made had it not been for the Spam sketch in Monty Python. So you have Sir Michael Palin and the late Terry Jones to thank or curse, depending on your view.

murasaki · 19/03/2024 18:09

Jesus, there's one in the cupboard. Squeeze it til it pops????

Why is Spam so expensive??
chattyness · 19/03/2024 18:11

I love fried spam but I buy the cheaper version made by tulip, I used to get Tesco own brand but it's vanished. We also love semolina I make it on the stove top rather than the oven because it's quick, a spoon of strawberry jam mixed in, comfort food in a bowl, yum!

Mochudubh · 19/03/2024 18:16

Slightly off topic but I fancied Vesta Chow Mein the other day and they're £4.00 each.😮

Howdidtheydothat · 19/03/2024 18:30

Spam is HUGE is Japan! Sold everywhere , can even buy Spam t shirts and other memorabilia

Riapia · 19/03/2024 18:35

Is it still possible to get Billy bear luncheon meat?

CHEESEY13 · 19/03/2024 18:37

Trying to purchase a simple tin of corned beef needs a mortgage these days. How did that happen?

I was musing with my friend that you never see blacmange anymore. Definitely not the bright pink, suspiciously resilient stuff we used to get for school dinners.

Where did the blacmange go?

OMG. Haven't thought about blancmange for years! Sunday afternoon early 1970s tea was ham sandwiches, a slice of fruit cake and a bowl of strawberry jelly and blancmange with some Carnation poured over.

OhmygodDont · 19/03/2024 18:38

Riapia · 19/03/2024 18:35

Yes in Morrisons.

I don’t understand spam. Like what is it? Why do people seem to love what from eyeballing a tin looks like dog/cat food. I don’t get it.

Runs away 😅

MoonWoman69 · 19/03/2024 18:42

Half my bottom fridge drawer is full of tins of Spam!!! I love it cooked and "raw", which it really isn't! I don't have it often at all, but it's there when it's needed for comfort!
Used to love Vesta! Both the chow mein with the crispy noodles and the paella... They are absolutely extortionate now!
And Fray Bentos pies are just soggy, claggy pastry and a tiny bit of filling! Rough!

5foot5 · 19/03/2024 18:43

CantDealwithChristmas · 19/03/2024 16:44

Thanks! Asda stocks it too apparently!

My mum used to have a plastic blacmange mould shaped like a rabbit.

Excuse me but I made a chocolate blancmange over the Christmas period. From scratch. None of your packet rubbish!

I do have a fancy mould (not a rabbit) and must admit it did not hold its shape very well. However it tasted delish

rightoguvnor · 19/03/2024 18:54

Spam sandwich with yellow piccalilli
Cubes of spam mixed into baked beans or tinned spaghetti hoops
Slice of spam with fried egg on top and HP sauce to the side
What's not to like

Northernsouloldies · 19/03/2024 18:58

Tinned semolina for the food bank...do you actively hate other people..🤮

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 19/03/2024 18:59

People who say " oh no yuk..it's horrid" etc.. you can bet they eat sausages.. which is just about the same .
Spam / bacon grill/ cornedbeef are so expensive these days.
Cornedbeef hash used to be a cheap meal.
Spam fritters were often on school menus.
( l still buy all three)
