Why is Spam so expensive??

wubwubwub · 19/03/2024 15:36

It's 3.50 a tin!

Seems expensive for what it is, no?

And yes i know

  • it's crap
  • it's unhealthy
  • it's not organic hand reared lentils
  • it's salty
  • it's fatty

Don't worry my kids don't eat it... I'm not overweight...I'm not eating it every meal... I'm not at risk of diabetes or high blood pressure yada yada yada

It is an occasional thing, mostly for a treat of Spam Misubi.

It is expensive because it's made by the Knights of the Round Table, who eat ham and jam and spam a lot, and their operational overheads are high because they need to buy armour and coconut shells to imitate horses hooves.

Also because it's delicious.

Pixiesgirl · 19/03/2024 15:54

Mmm spam fritters, so wrong they circle round to right.

swiveleyedconspiracyloon · 19/03/2024 16:01

its bloody good though, on a white bread sandwich with tomato ketchup😝

RainingCatsandfrogs · 19/03/2024 16:05

Maybe because hardly anyone buys it these days?
Along with semolina, l work in a food store store and these products are usually only ever bought by older generation.

Davros · 19/03/2024 16:10

I've had a corned beef and Branston sandwich today in white with proper butter I'm off to get some spam now. I've been toying with a Fray Bentos pie but I'm worried I'll be disappointed

swiveleyedconspiracyloon · 19/03/2024 16:11

I gave up on Fray Bentos pies as we cannot open the tin anymore

Haha!

Dp is also peeved at this. I don't eat the stuff, but it has almost been priced as a luxury food which it most certainly is not.

murasaki · 19/03/2024 16:14

Dp fries it and has it with a fried egg and chips. Possibly beans too.

I go for a salmon fillet or tuna steak, salad and chips when he does that madness.

I judge. But it makes him happy every month or so, so whatever.

I beg to differ. It is ambrosia and nectar. "Cardiff caviar" as we used to say when I was growing up

Oh man, makes me feel old, I buy ground semolina for my roasties!

Just get a spam fritter from the chip shop £1.60 (disclaimer: some chip shops will be highly confused by this request)

murasaki · 19/03/2024 16:17

Can anyone confirm whether it's actually the same thing as luncheon meat, also in a tin, as fed to recalcitrant me by my dad in the eighties, as DP thinks it is, and i hold fast to the fact that I haven't eaten spam outside school dinners , where it came in orange batter.

Yes, you basically need a working forge to open those bad boys.

mitogoshi · 19/03/2024 16:27

It's revolting - but was cheaper in home bargains last Sunday for the fans. Also had fray bentos pies and super noodles ... it's like a step back in time that shop (and is good for light bulbs, glue and shower puffs!)

I believe it's the same in essence as those delicious circles of flat pink meatoid stuff we used to get for school dinners, complete with the claggy yellow 'breadcrumb' around the edge.

Built a generation of champions,.

You’re just flaunting your wealth! 😂

Ladybughouse · 19/03/2024 16:32

I still buy Pek, my children and DH really like it. I make Pek and ketchup sandwiches for DH for his packed lunch. I will get my coat.
I also buy my DF battered spam from Iceland. He likes to cook it in his new air fryer.

tsmainsqueeze · 19/03/2024 16:32

You are right about it being expensive but totally unreasonable saying all those negative things about it !
Its totally delicious with egg and chips.

Ours had a semi crispy batter at junior school, but it was a one form entry effort. Still rank. Breadcrumbs sound even worse.

Dad still claims luncheon meat wasn't spam and DP claims otherwise. I'm on the fence, to be honest. But you wouldn't eat spam straight from the tin without cooking it, right? And we did luncheon meat, I think, so maybe it's different. Either way, none of it passes my lips these days.

I'm of the older generation (ancient at 65) but wouldn't ever buy such crap (my parents used to though)

Edited

This is news to me, as I've been eating spam straight out the tin for the past 52 years.

Not continuously for those 52 years you understand.

But raw spam, yes, delicious raw or cooked.

swiveleyedconspiracyloon · 19/03/2024 16:34

yeah you just slice it out of the tin, mmmm

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 19/03/2024 16:34

It’s all grim.

but I had to come in to defend semolina, which genuinely is the pudding of champions!! Especially the skin on top…

Ladybughouse · 19/03/2024 16:35

My DH also likes Fray Bentos pie, but I only use to buy him when they were a £.
The price is now 😟.
I buy fray bentos, tinned rice pudding and tinned semolina for food bank, because it’s on the list at food collection point.
