Why is Spam so expensive??

wubwubwub · 19/03/2024 15:36

It's 3.50 a tin!

Seems expensive for what it is, no?

And yes i know

  • it's crap
  • it's unhealthy
  • it's not organic hand reared lentils
  • it's salty
  • it's fatty

Don't worry my kids don't eat it... I'm not overweight...I'm not eating it every meal... I'm not at risk of diabetes or high blood pressure yada yada yada

It is an occasional thing, mostly for a treat of Spam Misubi.

People who say " oh no yuk..it's horrid" etc.. you can bet they eat sausages.. which is just about the same .
Spam / bacon grill/ cornedbeef are so expensive these days.
Cornedbeef hash used to be a cheap meal.
Spam fritters were often on school menus.
( l still buy all three)

See I’ve never had corned beef either because again looks like pet food tbh😅 No idea what a bacon grill is.

Though yes I have sausages from the butchers. I’m well aware that may well be the scrapings up of whatever. But at least it looks like a sausage not stodge in a tin.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 19/03/2024 19:06

Spam contains six ingredients: a mixture of pork and ham meat, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite, a food preservative added to bacon, hot dogs, cured meats, sausage, and smoked fish
.
so all you negative snobby Nellie's. Eat your bacon.. sausages and smoked fish.. because that sounds much better than Spam.
Special American Processed Meat.

Half my bottom fridge drawer is full of tins of Spam!!! I love it cooked and "raw", which it really isn't! I don't have it often at all, but it's there when it's needed for comfort!
Used to love Vesta! Both the chow mein with the crispy noodles and the paella... They are absolutely extortionate now!
And Fray Bentos pies are just soggy, claggy pastry and a tiny bit of filling! Rough!

Why are you putting tins in the fridge??

Luncheon meat and Spam are not the same thing!

I love Spam, especially fried slices of Spam on top of Ramen noodles. It is the Hong Kong breakfast of champions.

TheMurderousGoose · 19/03/2024 23:02

I only ever encountered blancmange in a Just William book. He was always scheming to break into a pantry and pinch a blancmange. I assumed it must have been something delectable.

pinkdelight · 19/03/2024 23:09

As an alt to blancmange, my mum used to make a Table Cream. Very pedestrian name and taste and also from a packet. She'd crumble a Cadbury's flake on top for a treat.

She still has Spam (in her 80s) and takes ages to get thru a tin. It stinks up the fridge all clammy like some corpse thigh.

I did love a spam/luncheon meat fritter back in the day though for school dinners, with greasy chips n cheapo beans. I think luncheon meat is just non-brand spam isn't it?

Edited

Just looked it up and

"All spam is luncheon meat but not all luncheon meat is spam. "

Which sounds like some ancient wisdom! Also -

"Basic idea is that Spam is a type of luncheon meat. It's also a brand name. Whereas luncheon meat is any kind of meat that is typically cured and precooked."

Why are you putting tins in the fridge??

I put corned beef/Pek tins in the fridge so that the fat hardens and it’s easier to remove. Otherwise the fat/jelly is very runny and it’s harder to remove.

Our Farmfoods does stuffed Spam breaded things which my fussy teen loves. It's cheese stuffed ones I get but I think they also do curry ones. A bit like chicken kyivs but with Spam instead.

Omg this sounds amazing 🤩

Isn't this a Spamwich? Sure I used to have them, with really fakey cheese inside.

There was also some v suspicious frozen rissoles called Chicklets that I loved in the 80s. Must have been sweepings up from the abbattoir floor in breadcrumbs, but a couple of those with cold baked beans and I was in heaven!

Did everyone have the rabbit mould? I only ever remember it for jelly and it hardly ever came out looking like a rabbit

I HAVE the rabbit mould!! DH occasionally tries to bin it. He's been unsuccessful so far

NamelessNancy · 19/03/2024 23:40

Shit, I don't give spam (or the cost of it) a thought usually but your description sounds like it might be right up my street. Curse you OP!

Onceuponatimeiwasahoe · 20/03/2024 02:31

Never tried spam but corned beef is equally as expensive for what it is. Full of salt and other rubbish but I do like a corn beef and tomato sandwich

BarleyShuga · 20/03/2024 03:51

FIL was given food parcels during Covid (no idea why) consisting of random tinned delights including FB pies, chilli, curry etc. The FB pies were surprisingly tasty when well-baked. How the pastry and filling coexist in the tin is one of life's mysteries.

I really fancy a school dinner spam fritter now.
But hold the tinned plum tomatoes.

BasiliskStare · 20/03/2024 04:00

I bought a stunt Spam -it's still in the cupboard waiting for me to find a recipe.

RainingCatsandfrogs · 19/03/2024 16:05

Maybe because hardly anyone buys it these days?
Along with semolina, l work in a food store store and these products are usually only ever bought by older generation.

I would have thought that with the rise of popularity of Asian food on insta, it would be the ither way around. I only buy it for Korean etc inspired meals.

Eastie77Returns · 20/03/2024 04:04

We need a thread on delicious foods we miss from the 1980s. Findus Crispy Pancakes would be top of my list.

I gave up on Fray Bentos pies as we cannot open the tin anymore

You need an Oxo Good Grips tin opener.

JennyLake · 20/03/2024 05:32

Spam curry was a family favourite growing up in the 1980s…I remember thinking it was delicious and a big treat. Blissfully unaware we were so skint that my mum and dad couldn’t actually afford real meat to cook with 😂

Last time I had one of these, remembering they tasted delicious at my Grandmothers house, it tasted of nothing , and had barely any meat in it.

So sad, I don’t know if it was so full of gum and thickener that the lovely meat flavour had gone, but there was also a distinct lack of meat.

Possibly seen them advertised with new flavour, recently, I’m not sure.

But they certainly had no flavour anymore recently

Why are you putting tins in the fridge??

Don’t you put tinned tuna in the fridge either, and of course tinned meat goes in the fridge if it’s ready cooked and will be eaten cold!! 🤣🤣🤣

wubwubwub · 20/03/2024 07:37

I've never put a tin of meat in the fridge....

My OH has taken to buying PEK.

Im not sure why people go on about it being dreadful, its much the same as any processed meat product, many of which are enjoyed on the continent (processed meats not necessarily spam).

PEK is polish I believe

I dont know how we got to a point where anything in a tin is regarded with suspicion?

I can tell you now that If spam or PEK was sliced and sold in a deli somewhere, people would be praising it to the hilt. But because it first made an appearance during the war and is in a tin people are critical.

Its just a foodstuff at the end of the day.

BeachBeerBbq · 20/03/2024 08:37

Point of tin is no need for fridge...
