Why is Spam so expensive??

It's 3.50 a tin!

Seems expensive for what it is, no?

And yes i know

  • it's crap
  • it's unhealthy
  • it's not organic hand reared lentils
  • it's salty
  • it's fatty

Don't worry my kids don't eat it... I'm not overweight...I'm not eating it every meal... I'm not at risk of diabetes or high blood pressure yada yada yada

It is an occasional thing, mostly for a treat of Spam Misubi.

Point of tin is no need for fridge...

Don't people mean tins that are open?

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 20/03/2024 09:08

If you’re eating tinned meat without further cooking, you want it fridge cold, so put it in the fridge first.

Also makes it much easier to get out of the tin, even if you are going to cook it.

You should never store open tins in the fridge - take anything left out of the tin and store it in another container.

Tinned meat is crazy expensive, possibly not much sold now or no real competition?

Bacon grill is my go to secret shame.

@Eastie77Returns Ah but have you tried them since? Absolutely bloody awful! I was so excited when I saw them at Farm Foods, my favourite was always the minced beef. Got some, ewww, don't know what they've done, or whether my tastes have changed since the 70/80s, but they are rank!

Why are you putting tins in the fridge??

Easier to scrape the fat off, easier to get out of the tin and slices much better. Any tinned meat goes in the fridge for the same reason.
Nothing else, just solid meat in tins.

Trying to purchase a simple tin of corned beef needs a mortgage these days. How did that happen?

Last time I looked (not so long ago) it was still £2 a tin in Aldi, when it was above £3 everywhere else, even Home Bargains.

In my experience, all corned beef is the same - it's not like cheap is grim and branded is better, they only really make it in huge bulk in Argentina and Brazil and then all supermarkets/brands buy it ready made from them.

Spam is currently on special for £12 for 6 tins in Costco, for anyone who has a card.

Ooh thank you! I need to go to Costco, so I'll bulk up my stock while it's on offer!

These are the cheesy spam things I mentioned before. I prefer them to hamwich type things, and as I say, fussy teen likes them and it's rare to get them to try and like new things so they're a win here.

Spam is the secret ingredient in the best egg fried rice as taught to me by Chinese Budhist Monks (actually my mates Mum who had a Chinese Restaurant in the 80's)

MoonWoman69 · 20/03/2024 17:25

Ooh @Hoppinggreen that sounds lovely! Any chance of the recipe?

Hoppinggreen · 20/03/2024 19:33

Well I wouldnt dignify it with the title of recipe exactly - like most of my cooking but it does taste good
Day old rice (or frozen)
Sesame oil
garlic, ginger, 5 spice, spring onion, spam cubes.
Peas and sweetcorn
Mix an egg with soy sauce and salt and pepper. Make a well in the rice so the egg is in contact with the pan and starts to scramble for a couple of minutes then fold it all together and fry for a bit longer, it should be quite dry

Iwantmyoldnameback · 21/03/2024 09:20

When I was a child we used to have spam pie, that's chopped spam topped with puff pastry served with mash and beans. I have in my head it was an old wartime recipe but I could be wrong.

chattyness · 21/03/2024 18:12

I've got a thin spam cook book on my bookshelf, inside it says that "because spam was an inexpensive meat, that even poor families could afford to buy it" not so much now though, ay Spam !

wubwubwub · 21/03/2024 20:25

I saw the cheesy spam fritters in the supermarket, thought, oooooooh, and then saw they were £2.50 for 2 and thought... Nah! 😂
