Did you go to school with someone famous?

I mean someone who was famous back then, not someone who became famous more recently. Child stars, athletes, children of celebrities...

How did they act? Do you think the fame affected them?

OP posts:

Yes. A couple who were minor sporting prodigies.

One sadly fizzled out but the other went on to have some success as an adult too but his ego was always bigger than his talent.

How many milky bar kids were there also had one in my school and not Essex.

also the brother of a member of my weekly drama class was in the 80s bbc children show children of green knowe

There were a few milky bar kids. But having googled them, I don't recognise any of the names, so I am beginning to think it's not true.

Maybe he just had an audition and never actually got the gig, but the story persisted.

I was really good friends with someone who was a presenter on 'why don't you'. 😁
He was great fun as a kid.

Loved that show. The theme time blew my mind - why would a tv programme tell you to stop watching tv. It broke the rules and I was on board.

Simon from Blue was a couple of years above me and was very nice. It was a small school.

I am friends with his Uncle and Auntie, they are such lovely people.. Simon is very much like his Uncle.

Sadly same. It was not a big surprise when I heard. He gave me the creeps.

My niece went to the same school and was friends with Malala.
My aunt went to Girl Guides with Venus Williams.

EdithStourton · 20/03/2024 09:35

A some-number-of-greats-granddaughter of Charles Dickens.
I wasn't a fan of either him or her.

sockarefootwear · 20/03/2024 09:36

I went to University with a guy who, in his teens, had been in a fairly popular and long running children's TV show. He came across as an egotistical arse. He was not particularly recognisable and although he was in it for years was never really a main character, but he constantly mentioned it to make sure everyone knew. He talked over everyone (including lecturers/tutors) and claimed that his 'extensive acting experience' basically meant he would get any job he wanted when he graduated.

Looking back I suspect he was not as self assured as he appeared and definitely had a chip on his shoulder about the people he's worked with of a similar age who had gone on to bigger roles as young adults and were household names.

IamaRevenant · 20/03/2024 09:36

Not famous in their own right but children of famous people.

Two children of a member of a very big band. They were so, so posh and didn't fit in at all in our village school. Both nice kids but seemed so different to the rest of us plebs 😅.

One girl (who was lovely) who was the result of a very high profile affair between her father (a Tory politician) and his secretary and had a terrible time at our school. Still regret not standing up for her more.

I went to school with Sir Nick Faldo, I believe he was a county swimmer before taking up golf at 14

I wish i had been at your school, i loved Bruce Foxton, please tell me he was lovely.

DD went to school with child of a celebrity. She found them quite pleasant though she did think they were spoilt. They always had loads of money and the most incredible birthday parties. Like their mum they had a lovely singing voice and great stage prescence.

It was a bit strange having someone you see on TV / in the media sitting in school events.

Haha my dad has always said that his schoolmate Terry was the original Milky Bar kid but I thought he was talking bollox. I've just googled and apparently it's true! Sorry dad 😅

What do you mean, was famous back then? They could only be famous as children couldn't they, or if their parents were famous?

Someone said they went to school with Nick Faldo and another with Bruce Foxton, but they weren't famous then, they were kids! Am I reading this wrong?

peachescariad · 20/03/2024 09:52

Russel T Davies was my head boy.
Was in the County youth dance team with Catherine Zeta Jones.

Name changed for this!

I went to school with Scarlett Johansson. She was in my little sister's year and used to come over, they were good friends. She was just becoming famous I suppose.

I went to high school with one of Steven Tyler's daughters (not Liv) and when he came to school we'd all act very unimpressed (ha!).

My friends big sister was the star of Sabrina the teenage witch (you may have never seen it!) and I used to go to their house and pretend not to be awe struck.

My friend went to school with the girl who did the 'my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard' song so I went to some parties with her.

Claire Danes hung out at the same park as me as a teenager.

Now guess where I grew up 🤣

My kids were brought up in LA too but in the public sector so no famous kids 😆

I’m not sure that is the kind of thing the OP meant 🙂

Well, if we’re going by that standard:

the first school I went to managed to make the news due to some pupils (few years above me) running a very much illegal “business” which involved the repeated destruction of private property. The parents and some teachers apparently knew but tried to deal with it in-house. That was a fun school assembly afterwards 😂

A chemistry teacher (at a very selective state school) severely burnt an underclassman during a practical demonstration.
That pupil was a year below me and we “smelled” it due to having physics lab in the same part of the building. That attracted a lot of news coverage (nationally). I suppose that counts as (in)famous… 🙊

Dustyblue · 20/03/2024 10:16

Sort of. An Olympic medal-winning ariel skiing champion was in my class in early high school.

I remember her as being an amazing gymnast. We were lined up by name & I was behind her for all our Phys Ed lessons. One time we had to do the vault, where you do a run-up, bounce off a mini trampoline and handstand over the vault.

Our future champion did it seamlessly, then I came barrelling up behind her, bounced off the trampoline and knocked the vault over. The teacher who tried to save me cut her arm on it.

I did laugh when I saw her sailing in the air in the snow, good for her!😁

Geri Halliwell and Rita Simmons from Eastenders both went to my secondary school.
