Neighbour spying on me

Lattecarmel · 18/03/2024 23:14

My neighbour is always spying on me through their living room window when I come home and leave my house. When I’m parking up it seems as soon as I pull up they’ve stood up and are then at the window looking out. I’m starting to feel uncomfortable about this. It’s not that they’re watching their car as I park or anything like that but they just watch me park up. In the morning when I leave the house I happen to move my head and can see them staring out at me (terrace house, both with front path)) I think they are quite nosy in general but it’s starting to annoy me. What would you do?

Wave at them 🤣

ladymuckofthemanor · 18/03/2024 23:18

Wave. Every single time.

PalomaColumbine · 18/03/2024 23:18

Smile and wave

Lazypeopledrivemecrazy · 18/03/2024 23:19

Hmm! Tricky one OP, are they elderly, in which case they may just be keeping an eye out to see who's coming and going at your property, ie, acting as neighbourhood watch. On the other hand if they're younger, you could always just give them a wave, to show them that you've seen them, which might make them realise that they're being intrusive. Failing that, ignore them, after all, as the old saying goes, 'a cat can look at a king!' In other words, they're not actually doing any harm to you, and everyone is entitled to look out of their windows.

HoHoHoliday · 18/03/2024 23:22

"What would you do?"

Nothing?

They might be bored, or lonely. They look out of their window, probably before and after you are there, and you catch their eye as you come home.

It's not like they are hanging around looking into your windows with binoculars.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/03/2024 23:23

Wave

BobbyBiscuits · 18/03/2024 23:26

@Lazypeopledrivemecrazy I love that phrase 'a cat can look at a king.' my mum used to always say it when someone would say 'what are you looking at?' in a slightly accusatory fashion.

Onceuponatimeiwasahoe · 18/03/2024 23:26

I have a neighbour like this and I just started to stare back now she has stopped.
I would wave or stand and stare back

DPotter · 18/03/2024 23:49

Wave & smile

NostalgicFreak · 18/03/2024 23:52

It doesn’t really sound like ‘spying’?

BruceAndNosh · 18/03/2024 23:54

Never leave the house.
That'll show 'em

WhateverMate · 18/03/2024 23:54

It sounds annoying but there's nothing you can do about it apart from what others have suggested, and that's wave and smile.

They'll either get embarrassed that they've been seen, or more likely will smile and wave back.

PlipPlopChoo · 18/03/2024 23:58

Moon them

TheGhostOfKatesProlapse · 18/03/2024 23:58

I hate feeling people are watching me - I have very curtain-twitchy neighbours too.

I do have to ask though, you don't have one of those cars that "bings" when you reverse and/or have the door or boot open, do you? Because I have a neighbour with one of these and am actually making a point of watching him every time he has it going off for 5+ minutes whenever he decides to poke about in his car. It's infuriating and I can't understand why he'd leave it on/door open while it continues.

I'll stop my rant now.

chattyness · 18/03/2024 23:58

Smile and wave or do nothing. We have neighbours like that, but they watch everyone who comes and goes, so at least if anything bad happens there will be witnesses! Just think of it this way, windows are for looking out of, not for looking into.

I thinking spying could be more covert.

They are just looking at you.

Annoying but smile and wave every time.

mrsfollowill · 19/03/2024 00:01

My mum is nearly 80 and mostly housebound. She sees all the comings and goings in her cul-de-sac every day and likes to tell me all about it when I see her and speculate where they were going etc - are they just old and bored?!

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/03/2024 00:03

Oh God, I hope none of my neighbours think I'm spying on them. I stand at my bedroom
window and do my make up. I see people coming and going in the morning while I'm doing this. I truly hope nobody thinks I'm staring at them 😬

BMW6 · 19/03/2024 00:04

Give them the full Jazz Hands and the biggest grin you can muster.

That'll unnerve the fucker 😆

Lurkingandlearning · 19/03/2024 00:07

They are looking out at a public space. You are looking at their window into their private space.

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 19/03/2024 00:09

If you don't want to smile & wave, just stand & deadpan back at them.

They're probably just bored though. Tv is rubbish these days.

FuckityFuckBollocks · 19/03/2024 00:19

My neighbour did this for years. It eventually stopped when I started taking photos. He used to watch us in the house too so whenever I noticed him I’d go to the front door with my phone ready, open it quickly and take the photo before he could move.

ALPHAFEMALESINCEBIRTH · 19/03/2024 01:02

give them the v sign

but me being me they would get the middle finger instead

mamacorn1 · 19/03/2024 01:06

Think of them as your own personal burglar alarm. I would click them “off” with my key fob each night , for a laugh.
