Neighbour spying on me

Lattecarmel · 18/03/2024 23:14

My neighbour is always spying on me through their living room window when I come home and leave my house. When I’m parking up it seems as soon as I pull up they’ve stood up and are then at the window looking out. I’m starting to feel uncomfortable about this. It’s not that they’re watching their car as I park or anything like that but they just watch me park up. In the morning when I leave the house I happen to move my head and can see them staring out at me (terrace house, both with front path)) I think they are quite nosy in general but it’s starting to annoy me. What would you do?

My kitchen sink is under my front window…never occurred to me my neighbours might think I’m a spy 🕵🏼‍♀️ 😅

So is mine 🤣

Platypuslover · 20/03/2024 18:07

Curtain twitchy neighbour is better than a house alarm. Bet you’ll never get burgled. When the next street over would be cleared out if they don’t have a twitchy.

Anon39 · 20/03/2024 18:09

OP I actually can completely empathise my neighbour watches me much that I’m freaked out - she knows my morning routine by what time my bathroom light goes on and sits in her kitchen watching me this is 6am!

I mentioned casually that we sometimes eat in the Lounge on trays and she said “I always see you sitting down at the table for meals with your family” 😳

she complained that my dad parked outside her house to pick my husband up for work and he “left his engine running” (no he doesn’t drive a tractor just a normal petrol car)

I’ve started leaving every blind facing her house closed permanently now because she text me saying well done doing your ironing at this time - I tried being friendly but it was just overwhelming

so I do understand why it’s horrible it’s not nice at all to feel like you’re being watched

CatMum000 · 20/03/2024 18:16

you only see them in their window when you are leaving or coming back. Are they retired? Do they get out much? They might spend a good deal of their day at their window not just during the times that you come and go. It's not always all about you, I would give them a friendly wave

Whyamiherenow · 20/03/2024 18:18

I would definitely be giving them something to look at 😂

I had a neighbour who installed cctv at the height of lockdown (why when people were mostly home). Every day my immense joy was working out what silly thing I could do in front of their cctv that day.

if they are looking. Give them something to look at.

Buffs · 20/03/2024 18:37

They’re probably bored, lonely and nosy. Give them a wave and be grateful someone is keeping an eye on your property.

Give them the full Jazz Hands and the biggest grin you can muster.

That'll unnerve the fucker 😆

😂😂😂

LatteLady · 20/03/2024 19:08

Many years ago, we had a chap who stared into our house as he walked by on his way to work. It stopped the day that my mum did a Von Trapp line up with my brothers and sister and we all waved enthusiastically at him! For some reason he never looked in again after that.

neelhtak · 20/03/2024 19:24

Not a bad thing at all. Nice to know someone is keeping an eye on comings and goings. Remember that "I'm a nosy neighbour" quote? Michael Caine?

Xmasdaft2023 · 20/03/2024 19:35

I’d wave! Make it well known they are seen 👋

as I pulled up in my car from work today and smiled at a family as they crossed the road in front of me, the little boy (about 4) gave me the fingers… you could also try that!

Trouble is it's sod's law that these people often don't spot anything useful to see. Years ago my parents had a neighbour, luckily not opposite to their house but down the road, and it was a standing joke that she 'clocked' the comings and goings of the whole street of houses (my Dad called her Mrs MI5).

Then someone opposite her was burgled. Yes, you've guessed it, she never saw a thing, officer, - in spite of being indoors when it happened. Seems like she'd temporarily left her observation post at the wrong time...

Plot twist. It was her! She was casing the houses!

Allofaflutter · 20/03/2024 19:49

I always think of Micky Flanagan doing the peep.

Pliudev · 20/03/2024 19:58

My DH had this years ago. The neighbour used to note down the registration number of anyone who visited by car. Came in useful when he was burgled.

Moll2020 · 20/03/2024 20:03

Wave 👋🏻!

Definitely look up and wave {we had an elderly lady, Anne, who used to hide behind her nets and Peer out... I used to see the curtain with and would look up and wave.

@Lattecarmel Are they worried about their car being dinged?

The only time I see people go and peer out of window is if they are anxious that their drive might get blocked in , or if they feel a large vehicle might damage theirs if parked on the street.

It is off-putting being gawped at.
Anne used to be like a one woman ''Neighbourhood Watch, long before Ring Doorbells were a 'thing'.

Not necessarily a bad thing.

Wave. My grandparents stopped a burglary mid morning...they have their cup of tea and love watching the coming and goings in their road. On the day in question they knew their neighbour was out when they saw someone jump over the fence..the police found the burglar in the house and never was taken. Neighbour was very grateful. Please wave at your neighbour.

My friend was burgled - some scrote wiggled in through a window and a neighbour stopped to chat when he and his mate were bringing the tv and computer out through the front door!

Not all neighbours are as helpful as your grandparents! Grin

Hmm1234 · 20/03/2024 21:01

I have similar neighbours start shouting ‘oh look it’s the stalker again’

That’s assuming the curtain twitching neighbours likes you lol

Never leave the house.
That'll show 'em

😂😂

OldPerson · 20/03/2024 22:08

Have to chuckle at the smile and wave comments.
Personally though I'd keep as much distance as possible. There are just people who snoop on their neighbours. They're annoying, except when a crime happens in the area.
Unless you are directly threatened by them - as in you think you will be attacked or robbed by them - just leave them be. They're not just watching you, they're watching every single person in the street.
They're probably obsessed by Crime Stoppers.
They'll probably be the first people to notice if some person has quietly died in the street.
They're probably only interested in you, because you live in their street. And their interest probably only extends to noting your usual routines.
If you think it's anything more sinister, or are very unhappy, keep a diary and note their actions and when you feel intimidated. And then contact local police to have a word with them.

BioHive · 20/03/2024 23:05

me, you get used to it, yes its a puzzlement as to why but overall i dunno, maybe one day ill understand why

Henrysotherwoman · 20/03/2024 23:14

Perhaps they are ALWAYS stood looking out of window, and remain there even after you've driven off or gone inside! 😊

mrsfollowill · 19/03/2024 00:01

My mum is nearly 80 and mostly housebound. She sees all the comings and goings in her cul-de-sac every day and likes to tell me all about it when I see her and speculate where they were going etc - are they just old and bored?!

Exactly that. I was feeling that as I read the OP, "spying" my left foot

I visisited many older clients and they were in the window as I arrived. Its unanavoidable if your sitting room is in the front and have no blinds etc.

FGS, let them look

As I left work years ago and rainy days we many not go out - I always try to use the first floor w/c and often glance out of the front our rea window

Spying my right foot, lol

CrayonCritic5 · 20/03/2024 23:16

The thing is that some people aren’t well, whether it’s mental or physical, so they might almost never go outside. For someone who’s living a full and functional life it will seem pathetic and strange. But it’s just them taking an interest or concern in their immediate environment. I would just leave them too it.

Mmhmmn · 20/03/2024 23:18

Is it likely they stare at everyone in the vicinity of their house?
Is there something they might be annoyed at and they’re trying to make a point?
If neither then you may have a creepy problem. But they probably just don’t realise how visible they are to you - have you tried waving at them to show you see them?
