Is a size 14 fat?

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

I’m really short with a very petite frame. 14 I would look fat. I was a size 20 but now a size 8 and look far more in proportion to my height and frame. Skinny wrists and ankles look rather odd when I’m overweight 🤣

No idea on my actual waist size, but my bmi was just over 23 last check. I am not fat.

If you’re wearing a size 14 then your waist is somewhere between 31-33”.

As I said that’s nearly always fat.

if you’re a man or 6’ tall or an Olympic wrestler or your size 14s are niche French brands or vintage or couture then you are the exception to the “nearly”.

User19792 · 15/03/2024 14:15

I am obese at size 14, my SIL is on the slim side of normal. Hugely varies.

Rainynight09 · 15/03/2024 14:16

Depends on what your height is. If you are tall (e.g 170cm or above) then no it is not fat.

Stressfordays · 15/03/2024 14:16

I'm tall and pear shaped. Even with a BMI of 20 a few years ago, I was a 10/12 on my bottom half because of my skeleton. I was an 8 on top though. I'm a 12 pushing a 14 in jeans now but a 10 top. I'd say I'm bigger then I'd like but I'm not fat.

It completely depends on your build.

DragonFly98 · 15/03/2024 14:16

Below 5'9 yes but am only answering because you asked. I wouldn't go about calling people fat at any weight.

EvesamtsirhC · 15/03/2024 14:18

Completely depends on your body shape and therefore what/why you buy clothes in a size 14. I'm not overweight, but I'm not toned either.

I buy size 14 leggings because I have 43in hips. My waist is 28in which I think is a size 10, but I obviously don't buy the size 10s. (Unless its jeans from Next. How I fit into the size 10 Mom jeans I can't quite fathom!)

I like figure hugging clothes to look streamlined not show every crevice, so I probably buy bigger than what some women do.

Gettingonmygoat · 15/03/2024 14:19

Not fat but getting there.

Mynewnameis · 15/03/2024 14:19

At my height size 14 is definitely quite far into overweight. I'm very short though and at a size 12 I am still bmi overweight

Or she could have wide hips? My waist is tiny but hips are wide. It's actually a nightmare finding clothes that fit.

transformandriseup · 15/03/2024 14:19

I would say it isn't slim or fat but over a healthy weight for most depending on their height.

Yes yes she could have wide hips, a Brazilian butt lift or be 7mths pregnant. Those could also be exceptions to the “nearly” 🙄

I wear a size 14 more for comfort. I am 6ft tall.

Thisisembarassing · 15/03/2024 14:26

Tbh, dress sizes are completely arbitrary a 14 somewhere is a 12 somewhere else and a 16 somewhere else again. So It makes no odds. Taller people often needed bigger sizes also.

being overweight is basically a medical thing right, your height and weight in a BMI calculation as a rough indicator ( as muscle mass etc aren’t the most reliable on bmi)

You actually said but it’d be astonished if a woman with a 31” waist wasn’t fat. So how astonished are you speaking to a living breathing, not fat size 14 wearing woman?

I'd say it's pretty common amongst the women I know (and I work in a female dominated environment so lots) to have hips that are much wider then your waist and be 1-2 sizes difference between top and bottom 🤷 Same for the other way round with large boobs meaning you need a much bigger sized top.

BMIwoes · 15/03/2024 14:35

I'm a 14 and I'm fat. Not very fat, not obese, but definitely fat. I can still dress nicely and look very curvy/hourglass. But i am fully on the matron from Carry On side of curvy, not the Salma Hayek side. 5'5" and around 11stone 10ish. Healthy bmi for me is up to 10 stone 10 and having been all weights from 8st7 to current weight as an adult, I'd say that the bmi is pretty accurate in my case - when I was 8.7 I was very slim but not underweight/skinny. Now I am quite overweight. Hence my username!

NC03 · 15/03/2024 14:39

I am at a 14 (5ft10) because I weigh heavy
So 15 stone for me is a size 14
Although I currently am a 16/18 and wish I was back at 15 stone!

Shady7 · 15/03/2024 14:39

I’m fat when a size 12 (BMI is in overweight) because I’m in the short side although I think it’s average height here (5ft3). I’d definitely be fat at a 14.

OP, I had the CS pouch after my birth and for a few months but it’s got much better now I’m between a 10-12 (10 on top, 12 on bottom) and losing more weight. It’s improving all the time. I hated it and thought I’d be stuck with it but just to reassure you it can improve - at least I’ve found it can anyway.

Real life = no, unless 5" or less
Mumsnet = yes, morbidly obese

You meant 5' not 5"?

Size 14 as in the following chart isn't big but it's probably a 12 or a 10 in shop-bought clothes.

Is a size 14 fat?
Goatymum · 15/03/2024 14:44

I can only speak for myself and yes I would be as I’m small built and should probably be a 10 but I’m not well proportioned so I’m a 12 on the bottom and 10 on top.
Your waist should be less than half your height and mine is - just .

iverpickle · 15/03/2024 14:45

I agree with a past poster.
If you've got a fat on your belly, then you have a fat belly, idem, fat on your bottom and thighs means you have fat bottom and thighs.

If you have accumulated fat practically everywhere, then you could be described by someone as fat, as an abbreviation of saying fat all over.

Size 14 is not really a good enough indication of anything, because it depends on height and muscles, but in general terms, if you are on the tall side you won't be "fat" whereas average or shorter, you probably will be.

Menora · 15/03/2024 14:45

The BMI not really helpful as a metric all the time.

Mine is 27 but I am a size 12 and not visibly fat anymore, I work out a lot so it doesn’t take muscle into account at all. Your waist should be under half your height so if it isn’t, you have adipose tissue in your midsection you need to lose despite having a ‘low’ BMI

BogRollBOGOF · 15/03/2024 14:47

Women's clothes sizes are pretty arbitary depending on cut, style, brand and manufacturer. There is no consistency.
14 is a mid-size and depending on height could be anything from slim on a tall person to significantly overweight on a short person (which it would be on me). Where a person holds their weight also matters. How broad they are and their muscle mass and bodyfat also affects sizing and look.

What really matters is are you healthy?
Do you have a nutritious diet?
Do you have good muscle mass?
Do you have healthy activity levels?
Does your weight negatively affect your life? (e.g. finding it tiring to move or increasing injury risk)
Do you have a risky level of visceral fat around your organs? (hence importance of waist measurement- sorry apple shapes)

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 15/03/2024 14:51

I’m 5ft 8 (so not short) and I would be fat at a size 14.
