Is a size 14 fat?

bubblebutt88 · 15/03/2024 11:35

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

If you're 5'0, a size 14 is probably "fat". If you're 5'6 it's solid- chunky and if you're 6'0 it's Amazonian.

LadyLapsang · 15/03/2024 13:56

Most women would have a BMI over 25 in size 14. Also, depends on the clothes, slim fitting high end European non-vanity size 14 is a world away from many UK 14s.

ColleenDonaghy · 15/03/2024 13:57

I'm a short size 14 and it's certainly fat on me. Probably much less so on you at 5'7".

PegasusReturns · 15/03/2024 13:57

Whether you’re 4’11” or 5’11” a size 14 is a 31” waist - that’s nearly always going to be fat.

Some people are going to carry it better than others, but it’d be astonished if a woman with a 31” waist wasn’t fat.

Snowpaw · 15/03/2024 13:57

Even at my slimmest, my bum / thighs are just always on the sturdier side so I'm usually a 14 on the bottom but I've never worn a 14 on top - always 12 or even 10 on top as I have quite narrow shoulders. If I got down to a 12 on the bottom I think that overall I would look gaunt.

5"7

Yes it is fat. No idea if it’s obese. I had natural and c sections. My weight comes from eating too much food, not my pregnancies.

LessOfMe99 · 15/03/2024 14:00

Some of these replies are shocking. I am really short. Size 12/14. (Probably more size 12 with big boobs so sometimes need a 14 to accommodate them)
All the comments saying 14 is overweight or even obese if you are short- you are wrong. I am not overweight- BMI 24.5. Ok, towards the top end of the ideal weight range, but absolutely nowhere near the obese that pp claimed a short person would be.

This question and some of the replies reminds me of pro Ana websites where people try to encourage the voices in their heads that constantly criticize their own and others' bodies because they aren't thin enough to meet a certain ideal.

Yep I agree @Sleepydoor. I am sure you are not trying to be controversial @bubblebutt88 but it’s not so much an unhealthy garment size as an unhealthy question. What value does the highly subjective input of others have? All you will get is opinion coloured by others’ own experience/opinions/value judgements/self-esteem and you will inevitably draw comment from people who enjoy being unpleasant. Even though most people try to say positive things I just don’t think these type of threads do anyone any good really, women in general and certainly not you as the OP.

nopuppiesallowed · 15/03/2024 14:00

I'm around 5ft 3 and 55 kilos with a bit of a flabby stomach as I haven't been able to exercise for 3 years. The flabby stomach bugs me and shows in fitted clothes and I hate it. I really don't want to be fat - and IMHO we should all try to avoid it. The health service is crippled - and it's not all the fault of the government. Diabetes, joint issues etc due to being overweight has had a huge effect on the NHS. If we can, (usual caveats here) we should all at least try to maintain a healthy weight. Size 14 doesn't sound healthy to me.

No idea on my actual waist size, but my bmi was just over 23 last check. I am not fat.

stayathomer · 15/03/2024 14:02

I’m aged 43, 5 ft 4, 10 stone and have a belly. Technically I’m a size 13, 14 drops down 12 is way too tight. My bmi tells me I’m at the edge of obese, so I’m at the far end of healthy

Depends on frame, height, muscle mass. When I was my fittest, strongest and leanest I was a size 14 (5ft11, cycling 200 miles per week plus gym plus working very physical job).
Now I'm the fattest I've ever been (kids, bad back, sedentary job) and I'm a size 16. Only one size up but a world of difference in terms of physique/form etc.

So yeah, Id guess that you know what's fat for you. Good luck if you do decide to lose weight! I'm trying right now and by god it's tougher as you get older.

OooScotland · 15/03/2024 14:03

I’d say yes, for me. I’m a size 14 and at 4’11” that’s about three stone overweight. When I was young I wasn’t slim at a size 10.

glittereyelash · 15/03/2024 14:04

A lot depends on your height and body shape. I have a friend who has an hourglass shape and she looks amazing at any size. I'm am apple shape so every bit of weight just goes straight to my stomach so clothes just don't look right on me if I'm over a size 12. It also depends on how you feel yourself. If you feel good at your current weight then no need to change.

BenandHeather · 15/03/2024 14:04

No it isn’t. I think it’s a nice size

Lavenderflower · 15/03/2024 14:05

In general, I would say anything over a size 12 is fat.

YouJustDoYou · 15/03/2024 14:07

I'm 5'5 and a 14 and yes I'm fat.

Sdpbody · 15/03/2024 14:07

I weighted 10.5 stone and was a size 14 in my jeans. I didn't look fat at all. I was a size 8/10 on top though, I just have a huge arse!

Sususudio · 15/03/2024 14:07

I missed that you have just had a baby, OP. I would leave any weight loss for later.

CupOfCoffeeandaPineappleChunk · 15/03/2024 14:08

Honestly, yes. Even more so in the age of lycra and stretch clothing.

TempleOfBloom · 15/03/2024 14:08

I was overweight when I was a size 14.

Still got compliments and told I looked good - but I had a bigger tummy than is healthy and bigger than I wanted.

I was in the BMI Overweight zone and am now ion the green zone and feel so much better. And personally I feel better in a wider range of clothes - personal preference, choice and taste. Everyone else, do what works best for you!

Menora · 15/03/2024 14:09

You can’t really say a size 14 as it depends on sizing? I was obese at a size 16 and top end of overweight at size 14. Medically speaking

Bellyblueboy · 15/03/2024 14:10

I just want to say this is an awful, awful thread. Why do women do this to each other? Stop calling yourselves and others fat!!!!!

men would never spend hours in the internet commenting on what size of jeans make them or someone else fat!

BigBoysDontCry · 15/03/2024 14:10

I'm 5'10. When a size 14 I was overweight, just. But then also unfit so the weight was "fat".

You could be muscular and a 14 and therefore not fat but still at or over the "healthy" weight.

I'm a 10 at the moment, at the bottom of bmi and not much fat, but I'm still not muscular.

If you have a roll of fat round your middle then that's probably your issue rather than the clothes size.

CaramelMac · 15/03/2024 14:12

20 plus years ago when I was a (skinny) teenager 14 was plus size and even the thought of being size 14 was horrifying, now I think it’s fairly average, but I think a size 14 now is what used to be a size 16.

TBF I think unless you’re very tall or very muscly then a 14 probably is overweight.
