Is a size 14 fat?

bubblebutt88 · 15/03/2024 11:35

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

It depends on how tall you are.

I just want to say this is an awful, awful thread. Why do women do this to each other? Stop calling yourselves and others fat!!!!!

men would never spend hours in the internet commenting on what size of jeans make them or someone else fat!

This isn’t really true to some degree, some men are very focused on their muscles and getting jacked and what they can lift etc, they also compare themselves to each other in this way. Men who don’t have muscular physiques can feel bad about themselves

I am ok with the words fat and obese they are descriptive words I’m not offended by them it’s not me as a person or my worth, it’s my health and lifestyle. I was quite obese now I am less overweight. I appreciate other people might feel uncomfortable with it though but for me, in all honesty.. being overweight had become completely normalised with everyone telling me I wasn’t fat to spare my feelings when I was overweight, and I did need to lose weight for my health. I would also see overweight people in the media proclaiming it’s normal and healthy, but it isn’t? I think it did me a favour to realise I could change it and it wasn’t about me being bad or a failure but seeing things more clearly and the option to feel healthier was a good journey to take

Atethehalloweenchocs · 15/03/2024 14:55

It depends on your build also, I certainly dont think it is fat 9 times out of 10. As a 14 I am slim enough to see my breast bone (not exaggeratedly, but clearly) and some ribs. I am 5' 8''. Have been bigger before and after - as a 14 people were starting to tell me not to lose any more weight. So no, it is not always fat. Not skinny either, but not fat.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 15/03/2024 14:58

Not on me, but then I’m a broad, hourglass, 5’8”.

AlfrescoPotato · 15/03/2024 15:00

No, you’re probably not ‘fat’.

Some of the comments on here could easily inspire an eating disorder. It’s the only place I know where a size 6-8 is average and anything above is XXXL fuck off whale size.

PlatinumBlondeXo · 15/03/2024 15:01

Like others have said it depends on the person and their height, bone structure, how their body carries weight etc. I was a size 14 years ago and on me yes I was fat and looked awful that size because I’m short 5ft 1 and tend to put weight on all over but more on midsection and I’m also naturally small boned. I lost the weight 5 years ago and got down to a 6 to 8 at my lightest but have fluctuated between that to a 10. To be honest I looked a lot better closer to a 6 than a 10. I’m currently 9 months pregnant and I didn’t put that much weight on this pregnancy so I’m hoping to return to at most a 10 but ideally a 6 to 8 by summer as I’m a lot more confident that size and I want to still be able to look and feel my best as much as possible even with a newborn lol

You meant 5' not 5"?

Size 14 as in the following chart isn't big but it's probably a 12 or a 10 in shop-bought clothes.

The size 14 in that chart is more like a modern size 10 in the shops. The size 18 in the chart is a modern size 14 in the shops.

KirstenBlest · 15/03/2024 15:10

@TheRainItRaineth , yes.
Someone asked me 'What size are you, 14?' and I thought she must be completely nuts but then I remembered she makes a lot of clothes, and I'm usually a size 8.
There is no way a size 8 in dress patterns would fit me.

squirrelnutkin10 · 15/03/2024 15:16

Yep, l am a size 14 and definitely fat...

AliceToTheWitchElm · 15/03/2024 15:18

I'm a size 14 on top and I am not fat/overweight and I am only 5'3. I need larger tops/shirts due to having 'build' shoulders from a lot of lifting and working out. My stomach is flat and I have lean, toned legs so I am pretty sure I don't look overweight to anyone.

inabubble3 · 15/03/2024 15:19

I’m a size 14 ,2.5 stone overweight. I defo feel fat and I’m very close to obese on the bmi. I’m fat but I look at others of similar build etc and don’t think they’re fat. There are usually far bigger people in every room I’d say.

HideTheCroissants · 15/03/2024 15:20

Depending on where I shop I can be a 10, 12 or 14. My GP says I am overweight verging in obese but has never once clapped eyes on me! I have a big bust which means my weight is high. I am heavier than I would like to be but I’m definitely not hugely overweight (currently wearing a size 10 skirt from next and a size 10 jumper from fat face).

Isitautumnyet23 · 15/03/2024 15:20

As others have said, BMI is better to look at. Easy to calculate that in 2 seconds online.

As you mentioned pizza, do you have a balanced diet? Get plenty if exercise? There is nothing wrong with eating pizza (every Friday night here), but if all you eat is pizza, then theres a problem.

I remember about 30 years ago, me and a friend were exactly the same height 5ft 3 inches and weight at 9 stone 4lbs. She was a size 8 no tits and skinny. I was a size 14 with massive tits and fat.
Still fat. Size 18 now after a lifetime of dieting and have diabetes.

While body shapes do vary, it is not possible that you were fat and she was skinny at the same height and weight. 9 stone 4 is very average for five three, I am a little less than that at five inches taller and I do not consider myself 'skinny' and certainly not fat either.

Same, I'm an 8-10 depending on brands and the measurements for those sizes in the chart would see me splitting seams (if I could even get them on)!

AnybodyAnywhere · 15/03/2024 15:26

I’ve spent the last year on a weight loss regime. Went from an 18/20 to a 14. Last weekend I bought a pair of 14 jeans and they actually fit - I’ve been looking forward to wearing them to a gig tomorrow - but now I know that I’m deluded and still fat 😂😂

KirstenBlest · 15/03/2024 15:28

Yes it is. Many athletes are skinny in terms of body fat but they could weigh the same as a fat person of the same height.

I'm taller than 5'3" and would be fat at 9st 4.

Annymania · 15/03/2024 15:28

It’s hard because dress sizes can look SO different on different bodies. I’m like a 10/12 so I’d say 14 for me would be a bit like ‘chubby average’

dottiedodah · 15/03/2024 15:28

Well according to the media over half of British women are a size 16 or over , so I guess size 14 is not fat!

telestrations · 15/03/2024 15:29

I would say it's overweight and likely on the edge of obese. All of which I am

Misthios · 15/03/2024 15:29

I have lost quite a bit of weight recently (11kg so far) and have gone from 13 and a half stone and a size 16 to under 12 stone and a size 14. I am still in the "overweight" category of BMI at about 27, but no longer in the "obese" category which is where I was before. I aim to lose another 5kg which would take me to the top end of the normal range and around 70kg or 11 stones.

Being "not fat" isn't my motivation for losing weight. It's about health and cholesterol and being healthy for my kids and any potential future grandchildren. I don't spend my days looking at myself in the mirror and obsessing about how I look, what other people think of me, whether I might be considered fat or not fat by some randomer.

KirstenBlest · 15/03/2024 15:30

@dottiedodah , your deductions seem to be lacking.

Just because other people might be fatter, it doesn't make someone less fat, not fat....

Trixiefirecracker · 15/03/2024 15:30

I am size 14 and 6 foot. BMI is healthy weight. I don’t think I look fat, but with my height I can carry it off.

Yes! I’m usually a 10 (when behaving) but for sewing or vintage clothes I’m definitely a 14 at the very least
