Is a size 14 fat?

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

I remember about 30 years ago, me and a friend were exactly the same height 5ft 3 inches and weight at 9 stone 4lbs. She was a size 8 no tits and skinny. I was a size 14 with massive tits and fat.
Still fat. Size 18 now after a lifetime of dieting and have diabetes.

Menomeno · 15/03/2024 11:49

I’m a size 14. My BMI is 22, so pretty much bang in the middle of healthy. I’m tall with a big frame (size 8 feet). My Mum is 4ft 11 and would be hugely overweight at a size 14.

KateGate · 15/03/2024 11:50

I used to be a size 10 when I was young, I have only ever dieted once, after I had my 3rd child, I was 10 and half stone and felt massive so got down to 8st

I am now in my 50s and would love to be 10 and a half stone but not enough to diet, I just eat what I like, life is too short.

mummybongo · 15/03/2024 11:50

Come on guys, a size 14 is not 'fat' don't be ridiculous. I'm 5ft3 and wear a size 14 mostly. If someone told me I was fat I'd tell them to fuck off. I'm not fat and refuse to call anyone else who's a 14 fat either, how fucking insulting and judgemental.
Yes I'm overweight for my height, yes I've got 'rolls of fat' on my belly that could do with shifting, but I'm nearly 50, I weigh 11.5 stone and I've got great legs. So I cover up the chubby bits and accentuate the good bits, therefore I look great and certainly not fat.
Stop fixating on weight and dress size, it's a complete waste of time and energy.

Katiesaidthat · 15/03/2024 11:50

Depends how tall you are. I´m a 14, but also 1m 76cm tall. So no, not fat.

user159 · 15/03/2024 11:51

I'm just shy of 5ft 10 and a size 14. I am broad but not fat. I can definitely look larger if i wear the wrong outfit - fitted clothes are better for example. I don't have rolls of fat when i sit down etc so really depends on many factors!

LassZombie · 15/03/2024 11:52

I'm a 14, and yes I am overweight for my height. I have noticeable belly fat.

NavyPeer · 15/03/2024 11:53

I’d certainly describe you as a ‘bigger girl’ if you are a size 14 and under 5’4.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 15/03/2024 11:54

I'm a 14/16 in dresses, not because I'm fat but because I have boobs. Sizes are all wrong in shops anyway, it really depends on where you buy your clothes

Redruby2020 · 15/03/2024 11:55

Depends on the build/height of the person and their natural body shape.
But to me no! I would kill to be a 14, never been less than a 16 and that was with weight loss, not near that now 😔

Jamiedodgers · 15/03/2024 11:55

I’m short so a size 14 on me would be very fat. What does your BMI say? I think as a society we are getting more and more disconnected with what healthy weight looks like as people are getting fatter and fatter

IHateLegDay · 15/03/2024 11:55

I'm tall and look fairly slim-average at a 14. I have friends who are short and would be a lot bigger at that size.

hyperplased · 15/03/2024 11:55

I'm a size 12-14, BMI 26, and would say I was fat at the moment.

DramaAlpaca · 15/03/2024 11:56

I'm 5'10 with broad shoulders and a strong athletic build. A size 14 on me looks, and is, healthy and normal.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 15/03/2024 11:57

don't listen to absolute idiots in here 14 is nowhere near far. what are size 20s then??? average size in uk is 16

BashfulClam · 15/03/2024 11:57

I am 5’9” and medium build at at a 14 I am a I of 23.

hyperplased · 15/03/2024 11:55

I'm a size 12-14, BMI 26, and would say I was fat at the moment.

A BMI of 26 isn't fat at all.

2023NEWMUM2023 · 15/03/2024 11:58

I am a size 12 and would class myself as overweight but not fat! I'd love to be a size 10

HeavyHeidi · 15/03/2024 11:58

I'm wondering how people interpret 'fat'. If you say you're 'overweight with rolls of fat' - isn't that the same thing? Fat for me is not the same as obese.

TinyYellow · 15/03/2024 11:58

Depends on height and which shop’s size 14 we’re talking about. An M&S size 14 would have been a 16 a few years ago. Personally I’d be overweight and feel fat at a size 14 and I’m 5’5.

rookiemere · 15/03/2024 11:59

I'm a size 14 and got a bit of a shock when I saw it's listed as XL on Vinted Shock.

I'm 5ft 6 and have broad shoulders and hips so even when I weigh less I'm a size 12. According to BMI I am overweight at 11st10 but I do exercise so although I'm a bit tubby I don't think I look dreadful.

I wouldn't say size 14 is fat, but it's definitely not thin - pleasantly plump maybe ?

SoupDragon · 15/03/2024 11:59

I have a big roll of fat around my belly

so yes, you are fat.

I'm around 5'8" and I am size 14. And fat. Just to make it clear that I'm not being mean! 😂

the clothes size number is largely irrelevant though. If you have "rolls of fat" then you are fat.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 15/03/2024 12:00

I'm 5 foot 6 and I was fat at size 14

Wobbly belly, big thighs. Every measure - BMI, height/waist ratio etc said I was overweight

I feel better now I'm a 12 but I'm still verging on overweight.

I think people's perceptions of normal have shifted. A normal healthy weight is thinner than you think.

Yes women do have soft curves, but you shouldn't have rolls of fat.

NoCloudsAllowed · 15/03/2024 12:01

Why does it matter? Fat is a relative concept.

There's a hard stat about how much fat you have (in your whole body, how much you can pinch in particular places etc), this isn't revealed by clothes sizes.

You can have muscle or bone that puts you into size 14 (or above), so it's not necessarily about adipose tissue.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 15/03/2024 12:01

I'm 5'6 and a 14 and I hate my body. It's the fattest I've ever been. I'm really hoping (probably rather naively) that once my iron levels return to normal the weight will drop off me and I'll be back into my size 8 clothes in no time at all! I don't think a 14 is THAT fat, but it's certainly not slim.
