AIBU to be shocked by the Irish referendum?

I'm not from the Irish Republic. I just read what the ballot was about. I am shocked at what their constitution contained:

Article 41.2.1° “In particular, the State recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved.”
Article 41.2.2° “The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.”

I'm even more shocked that early results suggest the Irish have voted to KEEP this dire crap in their constitution.

Am I missing something?

I've no idea who you're talking about.

I do know however, that constantly accusing posters of name changing, is against the rules, is bullying and is not allowed on here.

As you well know.

I'm reporting you.

@Mittens1717 I wonder if you can try and get this into your head.

Accusing other posters of name changes is NOT allowed on here.

That is why your posts keep getting deleted.

Are you 12? How many times are you going to keep doing it?

that's the fifth time that you've have said the exact same thing over and over.

Why not just say it once. You're derailing the whole thread

You're repeating yourself over and over, with the same laughing emoji that teens use, over and over.

You're breaking talk guidelines and your posts are getting deleted.

Can we get back on topic and talk about the referendum

Unreal that after all that, you're still going.

Sashamalia · 11/03/2024 21:22

@mumsnet can this poster @Mittens1717 be warned for continually harassing me.

I've asked her to stop several times.

In her last post she wrote "I will continue to laugh at you.

Glad you've managed to get yourself a good deal working remotely out in Spain, it sounds like an idyllic way of living. Remember there's.none so blind than he who won't see

Sashamalia · 10/03/2024 19:41

Em is it beyond your comprehension that people can be in a couple of different countries in one week.

Have you heard of ryanair 20 euro.flights?

I'm in spain today. I'm actually flying to Ireland again next week for a family commitment. That might blow your mind I guess.

I can live in spain and fly to Ireland every weekend if I felt like it. Its so cheap. 20-30 euro

Edited

Pretty pricey. I believe you can get 20 cups of coffee for €30 near Barcelona. (Though I'd probably have to hunt around a little in Dublin before I could get 10 cups for the same!)
Enjoy the sun and the cheaper things to be found there.

This almost feels like a tangent, but I voted Yes-Yes in the ref. Hate to lose!
I didn't have a lot of time or meaningful exposure to the referendum in advance, and tried to educate myself on some of the wording prior to casting my vote. Well it seemed on careful reading to be unremarkable, but mildly progressive which swung it for me at the time. I thought it was going to be good for women, and good for couples who arent getting married but are infact living together, raising kids...you know in durable relationships!

The only no vote encouragement I'd heard was some of the ridiculous hysterical stuff about how it was about gender politics, taking out the reference to women to deny that women are women and you'd have men using womens toilets. 😂You know, nonsense! I think it was basically everyone been confused so there was no voices of reason in the media, and what only a one seated TD party campaigning for no.

Anyway the little bit of this thread which mentioned the referendum makes me happy, and with the issues about the lack of clarity about 'durable relationships' and how it seemed to have been about to create for people with disabilities trying to live an independent life etc... well if thats true then Im very glad to to have lost this after all.

DublinFemale · 14/03/2024 11:11

@ApartFromAllThat

What constitutes a durable relationship, is there a time frame, does it have a start date?

Do both people have a voice as to when a casual relationship turns durable, or is when it is dragged into court they are told on such a date it changed from casual to durable?

m.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/durable-relationships-could-be-defined-by-a-couple-getting-a-christmas-card-says-chair-of-electoral-commission/a1922458908.html

Should someone have to pay an ex off if they happened to attend a wedding together?

Is there a payoff per Christmas card or can it be per Christmas?

As for the care amendment, people with disabilities have as much right to treated as equals within the state. Not all disabled people need full time care, that group was completely ignored. Watch buildings no longer modified to accommodate disabled people.

Constitution trumps law and with the strive wording the government can and would have sat on its hands regarding ensuring adequate supports.

If anyone was delusional enough to think the morning after the referendum that all carers would be woken up with all the supports both physical and emotionally they previously couldn't access lining up outside their door, well words fail me.

YY to all of this!!! Who's bright idea was it to put something so vague and easily manipulated into the fucking constitution fgs!?!

And 'strive'. As is carers don't have it hard enough already 🙄

Rainbowshit · 14/03/2024 23:05

The durable relationships wording is ridiculous. How anyone could have voted yes to such ambiguity is beyond me.
