AIBU to be shocked by the Irish referendum?

Yetmorebeanstocount · 09/03/2024 16:17

I'm not from the Irish Republic. I just read what the ballot was about. I am shocked at what their constitution contained:

Article 41.2.1° “In particular, the State recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved.”
Article 41.2.2° “The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.”

I'm even more shocked that early results suggest the Irish have voted to KEEP this dire crap in their constitution.

Am I missing something?

I'm irish. I now live in spain

I would never go back.
I honestly think that ireland is such a difficult country to live in. For so many reasons.

1)There is not much to do in ireland.
In the medium towns in ireland there is not much to do except sport and drinking

  1. in my opinion ireland is very patriarchal and old fashioned

3,) there is extreme tribal mentality, when yoy meet people in medium town ireland, people check not just who you are , but who your parents are. They want to know everything about you, about how respectable your family is. They prefer you if your parents and grandparents also grew up in the town otherwise you are called a blow in

Here in spain, if i meet people, they dont care about my parents, grandparents, cousins
, they just want to know about me.

People approve of you if you fit into their mold of acceptability In ireland. This also leads into unfairness in Job hiring. As people hire who is well known and seen to be from a good family in the community.

For example in the two primary schools in my home town in ireland.

Every one of the teachers to this day are white and irish, from locl families and from "good" families in the area.
This leads to complete lack of diversity in teachers in schools
4) the Catholic Church still has a huge influence on schools in ireland. When it shouldnt have.
5) Lack of amenities
6) lack of good public transport
7) its always raining in ireland .Really bad weather
8) everything is hugely expensive
9) rent prices are crazy.

I just went to a yoga class here in spain. My yoga teacher is also irish. She just saiyoto me that she'd never go back.

Ireland might suit some people but I'm so happy I'm out of it.

You met my family yet, descended from Hugh O Neil? Didn't he end up in Spain?

The HSE occasionally pays the NHS to refer patients with specific conditions, especially paediatric, to NHS hospitals.

I don't think that's what she meant.

What she said was

" the UK give you money, and you use the nhs'.

It sounds like she mixed up ROI with northern ireland

'extreme tribal mentality ' 😂 I'd love to know what town you were from. God knows the country is far from perfect but come on.

If you are ex pat (noun intended) Irish you would be amazed how quickly you find other Irish. Seriously, my mum knows everyone in our town, and if they are of Irish descent will know that, where from, their parents, their backgrounds. It seems to be how it is. When she goes on holiday it's the same, or Irish find us...

I've met a surprising number of British people who think Ireland is in the UK too. They think we're like Scotland. They need it spelled out that we're the equivalent of France. Ie, completely independent neighbours.

Sashamalia · 10/03/2024 19:22

Redpencil99 · 10/03/2024 19:07

Yes and the Irish middle class took their share of it too and lined their pockets

I'm surprised that this one hasn't gotten comments

Are you from ireland or UK.

It sounds like you were born in UK to irish parents. Is that right?

Which is not particularly tribal? And has nothing to do with a so called 'tribal mentality' in the actual country? I'm not fully understanding your points here tbh 🤔

Sashamalia · 10/03/2024 11:15

Jesus. Can you read?

I didn't write "I lived in ireland for three years"

Did I?

Look back. Read again

I said " I was in ireland for the last three years".

Before that , i lived and worked in spain for two years.

I grew up in ireland. I lived in ireland for thirty years. Then I went to work in spain. Then I went back to Ireland for three years. Now I'm back in spain

I'm not sure how you couldn't grasp that from what I've said?

Have you never left ireland for work? Really? Most people that I know from ireland have all gone to work in other countries for several years

At least you can, the UK freedom of movement is gone

IvorTheEngineDriver · 10/03/2024 19:26

As I understand it there were serious questions as to how the changes would work in practice. There's an article in the Guardian by a disabled Irish journalist (a woman) pointing out the many issues the changes could cause the disabled. It doesn't appear to be a bunch of reactionaries taking the field.

Oh, allocate funding!!!! Why didn't we think of that!?! You love Spain, for very valid reasons, and that's good for you. Ireland is not Spain, and doesn't want to be. We're happy enough being ourselves.

The Gaels came from Spain, Galicia

Gowlbag · 10/03/2024 19:28

Sashamalia · 09/03/2024 20:01

I think that the general public in ireland were too afraid of change.

In.my opinion it's the wrong result.

But I respect the vote.

I'm in ireland

So where is this mythical place called the Irish Republic? Or do you mean the Republic of Ireland. Or even just Ireland.

Éire

Abhannmor · 10/03/2024 17:08

Get a grip ffs. Like we need lessons in tolerance from the Americans. They've just overturned Roe v Wade! You sound like you have some internalised self hatred. The cultural cringe as it's called in Australia. Try not to look at us through the distorting lens of American or British media.

One thing I've learnt recently is how narrow minded and intolerant so called liberals can be. It's ' a bad day for democracy ' because people have expressed an opinion. And of course free speech is wonderful but you mustn't use it to say men are not women. Ugh.

Still thank the Goddess/ blind forces of natural selection acting upon random mutations , that we rejected this poorly worded and frankly insulting codswallop. It makes up for not winning the Grand Slam 🏉.

Almost.....

Feckin great post. Overturning Roe v Wade is reprehensible

Éire

It's Ireland. Or the Republic of Ireland. What that has to do with anything being discussed here is beyond me though. Are you a russian bot or something?

Redpencil99 · 10/03/2024 19:38

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/03/2024 18:18

It comes across to me that this was a 'Oh, you're all progressive and smart, women, you don't want to be told your place is in the home, do you?' and, having far more sense than the blokes in power have credited them with, the women of the Republic of Ireland have seen straight through it as a precursor to 'and we're reducing benefits (maybe even a cap on more than two children - after all, abortion is legal now) and introducing conditionality just like the UK has to force them into shit jobs as a result'.

Yep

Whatnonsenseisthisnow · 10/03/2024 19:39

Redpencil99 · 10/03/2024 19:32

Éire

We don't use Éire unless speaking Irish.
It's Ireland or the Republic of Ireland (ROI) in English.
Ireland is the actual nane.
ROI is handy too sometimes and lots of people use it.

Em is it beyond your comprehension that people can be in a couple of different countries in one week.

Have you heard of ryanair 20 euro.flights?

I'm in spain today. I'm actually flying to Ireland again next week for a family commitment. That might blow your mind I guess.

I can live in spain and fly to Ireland every weekend if I felt like it. Its so cheap. 20-30 euro

Ireland and galicia in spain are both connected. They are gaelic cultures. I've read that before

And afaik they're gallic rather than Gaelic. Gaelic is more Irish and possibly Scottish but not sure on that.
