Which white wine to drink?

Wafflethewonderdoggy · 27/02/2024 20:38

I feel a bit ‘over’ Sauvignon blanc with its strong acidic taste, with that having been my white wine of choice for about a decade.
what’s next? What’s en vogue at the moment? I like dry, maybe a bit more mellow than Sauvignon blanc.
any favourites you’d recommend?
most commonly I buy at Lidl and normally go for £7-8 a bottle, but can buy elsewhere.
im the only adult in the house and normally have one bottle a week spread over the weekend.
I need a new favourite!

Surrey Gold is lovely

AffIt · 27/02/2024 22:46

@Hobbi I'm an 'anti-wine-snob-wine-snob' - I'll rarely pay more than a tenner for a bottle of wine (unless it is Pinot Noir - my absolute passion, but I can only afford to buy relatively young wines. Maybe one day!).

The exception is SB, when I will normally go for the £12-20 range, because I really only like French SBs and I go for named producers.

Don't like southern SBs and have been let down too often by shitty houses. 😉

I asked this exact question a while ago and someone suggested a Picpoul (de pinet) and I got one in Aldi and was delicious (it’s not there at the moment but other supermarkets do have it).

Picpoul is delicious, Lidl do one for about £8 I think.

skippy67 · 27/02/2024 22:51

My faves are
Vina Sol
Any Albarino, and must recently picpoul de pine. The Lidl one is lovely. I've converted a lot of my SB loving friends to Albarino! I've never ever liked SB. Smells like armpits and is too "winey" for me😅

LoadsToLose · 27/02/2024 22:52

Falanghina
Picpoul
Reisling (dry)
Chablis which is a Chardonnay unoaked
I also love Bacchus (English SB type wine)

White sparkling- Cremant instead of Champagne

these are my easy drinking whites (I never drink with food though)

Umbonkers · 27/02/2024 22:52

Verdejo is amazing !

poetryandwine · 27/02/2024 22:52

I love this thread! I never got the appeal of SB and often quietly nursed one glass as everyone else lapped it up. Sancerre is good, though! And Pouilly Fume.

I love Chablis and Pouilly Fouisse (sp?) and I like unoaked Chardonnays and White Burgundies. Also White Rioja.

grumpymummy72 · 27/02/2024 22:53

Tokeji dry furmint from Hungary but Sainsbury's have recently stopped selling it.

Origamiheaven · 27/02/2024 22:55

Try 'Orange" a Grüner Veltliner from Majestic wines. Its Austrian I think but not sweet the name suggests. It is lovely

grumpymummy72 · 27/02/2024 22:56

Just found it in M&S for £8

OneTC · 27/02/2024 22:57

I like Macon Villages, Chablis (both Chardonnay I think) and sancerre and pouilly fume if I'm spending a bit more

poetryandwine · 27/02/2024 23:00

Yes, Macon-Villages also @OneTC . Waitrose has a very tasty one for just a bit more than the prices being quoted here. Surely it is also available elsewhere (but not at my local supermarket).

WithIcePlease · 27/02/2024 23:03

My current favourite is gruner veltliener
Also picpoul de pinet is good. Plus a cava or an English white - still or sparkling - for variety.
I'm after an assyrtiko as I like dry wines but DH hasn't sourced yet as he is the wine buyer

JudgeJ · 27/02/2024 20:49

Pouilly Fuisse or Pouilly Fume, both very very dry.

Pouilly Fume is a Sauvignon Blanc, just from a particular district ( on the opposite bank of the Loire from Sancerre).

Pouilly Fuisse is from the Maconais in Burgundy, and is made exclusively with Chardonnay grapes, so fruiter than Sauvignon though less acidic

fridaynight1 · 27/02/2024 23:09

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Viognier
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Viognier 75cl | Sainsbury's (sainsburys.co.uk)

or
Sainsbury's Chenin Blanc, Taste the Difference
Sainsbury's Chenin Blanc, Taste the Difference 75cl | Sainsbury's (sainsburys.co.uk)

I buy which ever is cheaper. TBH they both taste exactly the same. Maybe they are 😎

poetryandwine · 27/02/2024 23:10

Yes, @Allthegoodnamesarechosen , but it is much tastier than generic SB!

HareSong · 27/02/2024 23:11

Another vote for Viognier over here! I particularly enjoy the Cono Sur Bicycleta Viognier which is about £6.75 from Tesco (costs more in Sainsbury’s. ). Elegant Frog is ok, and the Co-op one is good, but getting dearer.

I had a Beronia Verdejo recently that was lovely.

I realised I dislike the really acidic whites. I prefer something with more body, smoothness and roundness.

Chitterlina · 27/02/2024 23:11

Austrian Riesling or a South African Chenin Blanc.

But I still like a good Marlborough though.

Davros · 27/02/2024 23:46

Forgot, I also like Touraine

bombastix · 27/02/2024 23:50

Chablis! It is my default white. So good

Macon Villages Chardonnay from M&S

I usually plump for an albarino these days. €6 will get you something decent. My local supermarket does a surprisingly drinkable Grüner Veltliner too for €3,99. 😲
I was an ABC until I tried Toques et Clochers Limoux Haut Vallee Chardonnay. It's light, elegant, beautiful, minerally, and more than I'd usually pay! We visited the vineyard once as we realised we were passing by, and stocked up, but those bottles are long since gone. They had 4 different terroirs and you could taste the subtle differences. Their Cremant was one of the best I've ever tasted.
I need to check the route for this year's holiday...... 😉

DillDanding · 28/02/2024 00:24

I love a good SB, but I’m also happy with Viognier, Picpoul, Gavi or a Pouilly-Fumé.

FloofyKat · 28/02/2024 00:37

Some fab suggestions here! I love to try different wines and labels, but in spite of my good intentions, I usually forget to record my favourites!
I don’t like the oakiness of Chardonnay and I don’t like sweet stuff. So I clearly need to make a note of the recommendations on this thread so I don’t end up disappointed!

poetryandwine · 28/02/2024 00:44

Thank you, @AngeloMysterioso
