Which white wine to drink?

Wafflethewonderdoggy · 27/02/2024 20:38

I feel a bit ‘over’ Sauvignon blanc with its strong acidic taste, with that having been my white wine of choice for about a decade.
what’s next? What’s en vogue at the moment? I like dry, maybe a bit more mellow than Sauvignon blanc.
any favourites you’d recommend?
most commonly I buy at Lidl and normally go for £7-8 a bottle, but can buy elsewhere.
im the only adult in the house and normally have one bottle a week spread over the weekend.
I need a new favourite!

A Gavi is nice and you get a decent one for under £10. My favourite is Sancerre but it’s pricey so a rare treat.

👆🏻👆🏻I second this. Sancerre is king but a nice Gavi is my go to

they do a really nice one in Lidl for about £8/9

Try viognier!

came on to say this! or a muscadet.
i love picoul de pinet (probably not spelt correctly!)

Auntieobem · 27/02/2024 21:09

My favourite white is uva non grata, gros manseng. Fab easy drinking, but yum wine

alwaysclockwise · 27/02/2024 21:10

My vote goes for Vino Verde. Sancerre is nice, but that's a bit higher in price

JayAlfredPrufrock · 27/02/2024 21:11

Placemarking.

Always disliked SB.

SulkySeagull · 27/02/2024 21:12

Vinho Verde - Delish and affordable

WhatIsHeThinking · 27/02/2024 21:12

Second the suggestion of Bread and Butter.
Also, although it’s the sav family, I do like a Sancerre

TimetoPour · 27/02/2024 21:12

Sauvignon Blanc (Australia/Marlborough etc-not Chilean)
Gavi
Sancerre

are my favourites

Notfeelinghunkydory · 27/02/2024 21:19

I'm not a big white wine drinker but when I do I go for Picpoul

ThePoshUns · 27/02/2024 21:19

I've stuck with Chardonnay through thick and thin.
Can't bear Sauvignon Blanc as too floral. Most pubs only seem to sell that and Pinot Grigio ( yuck)
Other whites I like are
Picpoul
Muscadet
Rioja

22fgjiyt · 27/02/2024 21:20

Definitely a try a Gavi di Gavi

Ooh, this is the very post for me! I used to work in the wine trade (IWST Advanced Diploma holder right here) and am a big white wine drinker.

I will drink Picpoul until it's coming down my nose, but I appreciate that some find it a little bland.

Spanish whites are brilliant (Albariño, white Rioja etc) but there are also a lot of terrific Portuguese whites, including Vinho Verdes, which have a lovely light appley flavour and are often lower in alcohol, making them easy 'drinking' wines.

I am a HUGE white Burgundy fan, although a lot of people have been put off Chardonnay by the sort of cheap, heavily-oaked stuff that flooded the UK in the early 2000s. I used to absolutely delight in convincing the ABCs (Anything But Chardonnay) that they did actually like Chardonnay, they just hadn't met the right one yet.

I haven't even started on Austria or Germany yet...

Aldi and Lidl have absolutely splendid European wine lists and they are incredibly affordable: my go-to supermarkets for wine!

Happy to chat more (I could literally talk about this all day).

Please tell us more about your recommendations for the Austrian/German wines!

also, any specific recommendations for Aldi/Lidl brands?

Mumdiva99 · 27/02/2024 21:21

I really like bread and butter but the price might be more than you are looking for.

I'm drinking Barefoot Buttery Chardonnay at the moment. It is oaked and really easy to drink.

Hopeandglorry · 27/02/2024 21:22

@AffIt which supermarket chardonnays do you recommend please?

BreakingAndBroke · 27/02/2024 21:23

Sainsbury's do a nice Vouvray.

SoEmbarrassed2024 · 27/02/2024 21:24

Albariño or Viognier for me

Jewelanemone · 27/02/2024 21:28

Place marking this for future reference!

I'm currently favouring sparkling English wine - Greyfriars Blanc de Blanc is gorgeous, and is made just up the road from me 😋

Mytholmroyd · 27/02/2024 21:29

This is interesting - I thought everyone's favourite white was SB! I gave up drinking it a decade ago when I finally narrowed down my seemingly 'random' wine headaches to it - it gives me a headache before I even finish a glass so haven't touched it since! Was mostly New Zealand SB I was drinking.

There are so many other better whites though. I love Viognier as I already said and white Rioja is great too. Lots of good unoaky Chardonnays around and cannot beat an Alsace Gewürztraminer with Thai food!

I’m a red drinker but everyone I know raves about bread & butter (think it’s a Chardonnay)

This is a very oaky wine. I personally love it and everyone else I know hates it!

This is true yes - and had some lovely bottles of Bachuus particularly (not sparkling tho).

Myself40 · 27/02/2024 21:31

I usually choose Sauvignon blanc and have always said I hate Chardonnay but there’s a cheap Chardonnay at marks and Spencer’s that I absolutely loved. It’s just called ‘soft and tropical’ or something like that. Lovely.

ImnotadickheadIpromise · 27/02/2024 21:31

@Peppapog263 i second the Picpoul! Haven’t tried a supermarket one but have it in a local bar and it’s delicious

I’m also a long time Marlborough SB lover but have also swerved towards a nice Chenin Blanc recently too

devildeepbluesea · 27/02/2024 21:32

I’ve become really fond of the Portuguese whites in Lidl recently.
Also like Picpoul, pecorino and Sancerre (when flush).

GettingStuffed · 27/02/2024 21:33

I love a Gewürztraminer, pinot grigio , but I also like seriously dry wines. We've never had a poor 19 crimes

PersephonePomegranate23 · 27/02/2024 21:37

I quite like a Viognier - much lighter than Sav Blanc (although I do still love a Marlborough).
