Which white wine to drink?

Wafflethewonderdoggy · 27/02/2024 20:38

I feel a bit ‘over’ Sauvignon blanc with its strong acidic taste, with that having been my white wine of choice for about a decade.
what’s next? What’s en vogue at the moment? I like dry, maybe a bit more mellow than Sauvignon blanc.
any favourites you’d recommend?
most commonly I buy at Lidl and normally go for £7-8 a bottle, but can buy elsewhere.
im the only adult in the house and normally have one bottle a week spread over the weekend.
I need a new favourite!

Pinot Grigio Grin
Soave
Vinho verde
Picpoul

LilacMcMiaow · 28/02/2024 01:26

I normally go for a red but for a nice white wine I choose a Gavi, or something with Grenache blanc as the main grape (e.g. some yummy Côtes du Rhône whites are Grenache based). I don’t know a lot about wine but that’s just my personal opinion/taste.

BlackForestCake · 28/02/2024 01:27

Didn't there used to be a wine thread? What happened to it?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 02:04

I was waiting for someone to say Verdejo then several people did! I have family in Spain and I always go for that when I'm there. Beautiful and cheap! In a British supermarket or bar my favourite is Viognier or Chenin Blanc.

@Hobbi I'm an 'anti-wine-snob-wine-snob' - I'll rarely pay more than a tenner for a bottle of wine (unless it is Pinot Noir - my absolute passion, but I can only afford to buy relatively young wines. Maybe one day!).

The exception is SB, when I will normally go for the £12-20 range, because I really only like French SBs and I go for named producers.

Don't like southern SBs and have been let down too often by shitty houses. 😉

I've really enjoyed your posts, thank you!

bittertwisted · 28/02/2024 05:27

This is a great post
Bring on the recommendations for good Chardonnay please
I always loved it, but got sucked in to the SB hype
I also really like Gavi, Chenin blanc and a nice cheap Vina Sol Wine

PuppyMonkey · 28/02/2024 07:22

I also hate oaky Chardonnay, the Aldi Australian limestone coast one I recommended earlier is NOT oaky - when I found it about ten years ago, I was in heaven!

Ive also enjoyed Morrisons Finest pay d’oc Chardonnay recently - £8 - yum!

ThePoshUns · 28/02/2024 08:06

What I found rather depressing in Asda recently that the Chardonnay shelf was full of 'Jam Shed', '19 crimes' and other awfulness.
Not cheap either, who is buying this awful stuff?
As well as SB I cannot drink Prosecco, both give me a headache after one sip.
I recently reached a life ' milestone' and I must have been given a dozen bottles of Prosecco. Have a great stock to 'regift'.

PuppyMonkey · 28/02/2024 08:16

I’m glad I’ve found others who hate SB on this thread - I think it’s so bitter and unpleasant!

Wafflethewonderdoggy · 28/02/2024 10:01

Thanks so much everyone! Loads of things to try

I only like German wines, Leibfraumilch, Riesling, Hock

CrushingOnRubies · 28/02/2024 10:34

The white Rioja that Casillero Del Diablo do

Also I'm a fan of a cold crisp Pinot Grigio

Gruntle · 28/02/2024 10:35

I do love the taste of a NZ Sauvignon blanc but also find it very acidic so one glass and I’m done (maybe not a bad thing).

I also enjoy a Bacchus, picpoul de pinet, pecorino and have had some nice Viognier and some nice Chenin blanc but they’re quite variable- some Chenin blanc in particular taste quite flat and nothingy but others have a good mineral bite.

I dislike pinot Grigio and oaked Chardonnay.

I barely drink any wine these days but im
going to try gavi and Albariño off the back of this thread

CruCru · 28/02/2024 10:46

You may like gruner veltliner

Ooh, this is the very post for me! I used to work in the wine trade (IWST Advanced Diploma holder right here) and am a big white wine drinker.

I will drink Picpoul until it's coming down my nose, but I appreciate that some find it a little bland.

Spanish whites are brilliant (Albariño, white Rioja etc) but there are also a lot of terrific Portuguese whites, including Vinho Verdes, which have a lovely light appley flavour and are often lower in alcohol, making them easy 'drinking' wines.

I am a HUGE white Burgundy fan, although a lot of people have been put off Chardonnay by the sort of cheap, heavily-oaked stuff that flooded the UK in the early 2000s. I used to absolutely delight in convincing the ABCs (Anything But Chardonnay) that they did actually like Chardonnay, they just hadn't met the right one yet.

I haven't even started on Austria or Germany yet...

Aldi and Lidl have absolutely splendid European wine lists and they are incredibly affordable: my go-to supermarkets for wine!

Happy to chat more (I could literally talk about this all day).

This is so useful. I’d love a list (of 6ish?!) top rated wines that fall in to this category preferably from one place and would happily buy them all to try on your recommendation, if you’d be happy to share some of your options?

Elephantswillnever · 28/02/2024 10:56

Aldi do a really nice organic pinot Grigio that is now my go to, I used to drink Sauvignon blanc too.

twilighteaser · 28/02/2024 10:58

We're currently drinking Falanghina from the Campania region of Italy and Sardinian Vermentino.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 28/02/2024 11:37

I like Portuguese whites, they are excellent value. Also Australian Riesling, Gavi, and white Rioja.

Saladcreamdreams · 28/02/2024 11:38

White rioja

The Aldi wines are great. Will have to try this one.

I’m a red drinker but everyone I know raves about bread & butter (think it’s a Chardonnay)

It's the only wine ever I did not drink and it ended up in the sink :). It's very very strong and oaked.

FictionalCharacter · 28/02/2024 11:39

Mytholmroyd · 27/02/2024 20:45

Try viognier!

I recommend a Viognier too. Loads of flavour, very complex.

PS Aldi have some excellent ones at their usual very reasonable prices.

LoadsToLose · 28/02/2024 13:23

Unfortunately I can’t drink Aldi wines- they taste nice but I react badly to a lot of mass produced wine. Not sure why- probably higher levels of sulphites. But every time I try Aldi or Lidl I react. Sainsburys/coop wine is better but still not 💯 for me. I feel like my chest is on fire and get all wheezy

I now buy all my wine from Cambridge Wine Merchants- they deliver all over the country and focus on smaller producers- I’ve only ever reacted to one of their falanghinas. Everything they sell is top quality. They won independent wine shop award which is how I heard about them. I prefer to spend a bit more as I don’t go out much!

LoadsToLose · 28/02/2024 13:27

I tried Bread and Butter Chardonnay and hated it.. but it’s everything I dislike about Chardonnay. If you’re into that fusty oaky taste with thick yellow character- you will love it! I prefer the lighter, fresh Chardonnay (petit Chablis)
