Karen’s Diner/Katie Hopkins - cancel?

Quick question:
In the words of Mumsnet, AIBU?
It’s my eldest’s 30th this year, and as a surprise I’ve planned a day out for us on March 17th. We’re going to Hello Kitty cafe, Priscilla the Party and ending up in Karen’s Diner in Islington.
Some of you might know Karen’s from Social media. You basically get insulted and it looks very amusing.
I see from their insta, they’re doing some kind of collaboration with Katie Hopkins in their Manchester and Birmingham restaurants I think.
I am horrified and have left comments to that effect.
I actually feel that I want to cancel, and it’s a shame as it’s something we’d wanted to do for ages.
I however, cannot give my hard earned ££ to an organisation that is giving a platform to a racist right wing Trump supporting bigot.
Am I being unreasonable to cancel our reservation??

Katie Hopkins or not, I don't know why people pay to be insulted. It's so weird.

AgnesNaismith · 16/02/2024 22:58

You should cancel anyway because a cafe that’s ethos is built on a misogynistic trope is bullshit.

coodawoodashooda · 16/02/2024 22:59

Katie Hopkins is alright.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/02/2024 23:01

Totally cancel. Hopkins is pure scum. Just imagine if you turn up and they've got her and Tommy Robinson on podiums ranting? Sounds horrific.
There's loads and loads of places to eat in Islington. You do not need to use this bonkers sounding venue.

Lewiscapaldiscat · 16/02/2024 23:01

I went to the hello kitty cafe and it was a 2.5 hour wait for a 15 minute experience at Somerset house.

yes cancel - Katie Hopkins is a stain on humanity

ColdButSunny · 16/02/2024 23:02

I would cancel and book somewhere else.

fluffycatkins · 16/02/2024 23:02

I don't like Karen's dinner or Katie Hopkins. I can absolutely see how they think these two stereotypes go together.
Why give your hard earned money to any organization that mocks women like this?

antbarbara · 16/02/2024 23:02

You are being unreasonable. You're as bad as people like Hopkins if you think the 'Karen' nonsense is amusing.

RosaMoline · 16/02/2024 23:03

Thanks… I sense there will be an immense backlash coming their way!

Yes, I would absolutely cancel somewhere that was colaborating with Katie Hopkins. But WTF do people even go to Karen' Diner. The whole concept is weird AF. But the food looks really shit too- just some crappy burgers!

AncientBallerina · 16/02/2024 23:03

Why would you go at all? It sounds awful.

spidermonkeys · 16/02/2024 23:03

KH aside, I can't see the appeal for Karen's diner. Why on earth anyone would pay for the experience is beyond me.

RosaMoline · 16/02/2024 23:03

coodawoodashooda · 16/02/2024 22:59

Katie Hopkins is alright.

In what way?!

RosaMoline · 16/02/2024 23:04

We just thought it would be a fun thing to do. It appeals to our sense of humour.

Sausage77 · 16/02/2024 23:05

Why on earth would you want to pay to be insulted in the first place? The KH link isn’t the weirdest thing about this!

If you are amused or think you'll enjoy an experience like that then Im surprised you dont have time for someone like Hopkins, its much of a muchness

EdgeOfACoin · 16/02/2024 23:11

'Karen' is an ageist, misogynistic term.

Why would you want to go to a place that prides itself on being ageist and misogynistic?

LadyWithLapdog · 16/02/2024 23:11

I’d cancel, OP. I wouldn’t knowingly spend my time and money on something that gives money to KH.

ButtonMoonLoon · 16/02/2024 23:12

I wouldn’t go there.

Several of their sites have had zero food hygiene ratings, some have had drug raids and a friend told me about this horrific incident at her local one.

I wouldn’t want anything to do with any business affiliated with the truly vile KH

Hmm. Because ageism and misogyny is hilarious.

LadyWithLapdog · 16/02/2024 23:19

BIL told me there used to be a Chinese restaurant in Soho some 20+ years ago where the staff were very rude. I think it inadvertently became a ‘thing’ for a while.

CharSiu · 16/02/2024 23:25

@LadyWithLapdog it was called Wong Kei , I’m actually Chinese and didn’t want to go but my friends insisted, this would have have been about 25 years ago. The food was crap, I found it all deeply uncomfortable. No idea if it is still there.

I think the Karen’s diner thing is just awful.

LeSoleil · 16/02/2024 23:25

@LadyWithLapdog I remember it. There was an elderly Chinese waitress who was exceptionally terse with diners. It was not acting, it was just the way the staff dealt with the constant footfall of diners.

LadyWithLapdog · 16/02/2024 23:28

@CharSiu @LeSoleil yes, they didn’t put it on, probably just tired and grumpy. I didn’t go, but BIL went with his friends quite a few times.

SwedishEdith · 16/02/2024 23:33

Christ, just looked at the photos on Tripadvisor. The hats people are wearing in front of young kids 🙄 Looks awful - "humour" for people unfunny people.
