Karen’s Diner/Katie Hopkins - cancel?

RosaMoline · 16/02/2024 22:56

Quick question:
In the words of Mumsnet, AIBU?
It’s my eldest’s 30th this year, and as a surprise I’ve planned a day out for us on March 17th. We’re going to Hello Kitty cafe, Priscilla the Party and ending up in Karen’s Diner in Islington.
Some of you might know Karen’s from Social media. You basically get insulted and it looks very amusing.
I see from their insta, they’re doing some kind of collaboration with Katie Hopkins in their Manchester and Birmingham restaurants I think.
I am horrified and have left comments to that effect.
I actually feel that I want to cancel, and it’s a shame as it’s something we’d wanted to do for ages.
I however, cannot give my hard earned ££ to an organisation that is giving a platform to a racist right wing Trump supporting bigot.
Am I being unreasonable to cancel our reservation??

YABU to go to Karen’s Diner at all, regardless of who they’re teaming up with.

GinaB8 · 17/02/2024 05:36

Tbf to the organisers, I imagine there’s a bit of overlap, Venn diagram style, between people who don’t see the issue with the Karen insult nor Katie Hopkins…

Cancel anyway as your daughter of all people should never be insulted, least of all on her birthday.

Musiclover234 · 17/02/2024 06:23

The Manchester/prestwich one is on groupon or other voucher sites so that tells you they aren’t making money. They won’t be around very long in this climate. if it’s your kind of thing then you would only really visit once? No or few returning customers.

Fantastic I love Katie Hopkins. Someone who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and upset the woke brigade.

Haha. Trying a bit too hard on the wind up. ‘Woke’ and ‘Brigade’ in one sentence?! Too obvious mate. 1/5.

AlexaPlaySomeHappyHardcore · 17/02/2024 06:39

I personally wouldn’t want to go to a Karen’s Diner anyway but I definitely wouldn’t want to spend money anywhere that collaborates with Katie Hopkins. I would vote with my feet and my wallet and I’d tell them why. I’d do the same with a business that collaborated with Andrew Tate or Tommy Robinson too for example.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 17/02/2024 06:45

Also the concept of paying to be insulted and eat sub-McDonalds quality food is crazy. I bet the insults aren’t at all witty or clever. Probably just lewd C-bombs and comments on peoples appearance.

I also can’t fathom taking a child to such an establishment.

It’s bonkers and the craziest bit is that KH would probably be outside the restaurant picketing and urging yobs to throw bricks, if it were kids being read non offensive books by men dressed as women. However, she’s completely supportive of men swearing at kids in a restaurant.

This is why you can’t take these activist types seriously. They don’t really give a shit about anything. No real principles. It’s just a grift, and they can convince the more ‘gullible’ members of the public to support them in their BS.

Fortunately, none of my friends or family are this ‘gullible’ to put it politely.

I think this could be the end of the road for them. I've never been and have no desire to but the point was that it's supposed to be tongue in cheek. The things Katie Hopkins says are far from amusing in any capacity. She's willing to be mean, spiteful and offensive for money and there's a cynical manipulation at the heart of it.

I would never knowingly give money to her even indirectly.

Updownleftandright · 17/02/2024 06:46

I would go and call her a cunt back, then ask her how her career is going.

It's not a wind up, it's Katie! Hello Katie, so glad you could drop by. 👋

Katie Hopkins is alright.

Is that you, Katie?

Charlie2121 · 17/02/2024 06:49

Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson for that matter are attacked because of people’s inability to listen to what they actually say.

They are demonised because of how people characterise them. That is easier for many on the left to do because it prevents them from ever having to respond to the points being made.

As the famous quote from Margaret Thatcher goes “If they attack you personally it means they have not a single political argument left”

That pretty much sums up the left these days.

Updownleftandright · 17/02/2024 06:52

Interesting point. Let's see how the far right does in the next GE then. Might help if we didn't have a leader that shits himself everytime a poor person asks him a question that is off script.

LadyWithLapdog · 17/02/2024 06:55

If rejecting KH and TR is leftist, thank god we’re all leftists and woke. Or maybe just more decent people than the cunty bunch.

Sodndashitall · 17/02/2024 06:56

Plenty of alternatives in Islington so go somewhere else. If you want a concept restaurant there are plenty of those in London too!

amylou8 · 17/02/2024 06:59

Nothing wrong with KH...you only need to look at the risen of Reform to see the right are taking a stand. Karen's diner on the other hand??? I don't get that at all...but if it's your thing go for it.

Updownleftandright · 17/02/2024 06:46

I would go and call her a cunt back, then ask her how her career is going.

But she wouldn’t give a shit. She’d just bank your money. She’d happily tour the country being booed and insulted, as long as the cheques cleared. People like her are best left on ignore. They thrive on any engagement as it can be monetised.

Reform are the right wing of the right wing of the Conservative Party. They are the former/rebranded Brexit party.

Given what Brexit has done to the economy, anyone who thinks Reform is the answer to our problems, should have their details taken down so we know who to shake down for cash to prop up the economy.

lemonmeringueno3 · 17/02/2024 07:04

There is a diner at Walt Disney World in Florida where the staff are (intentionally) rude and insulting, so this is a thing even if mn doesn't get it.

The KH thing wouldn't bother me. She's appearing for one night at their Manchester branch.

transformandriseup · 17/02/2024 07:04

I disagree with this, I do listen to what Katie says. I think her opinions are too simplistic and don't consider other factors plus she has a sneery tone of voice and I generally find her unlikable.

HeraSyndulla · 17/02/2024 07:05

If being insulted is your thing than surely KH is a perfect fit. Personally I think her Batshit Bonkers Britain hits a nerve because it’s uncomfortable for some to admit to.

10ThousandSpoons · 17/02/2024 07:08

It seems like a good fit for their brand. If you're going to a sick place like that it's the sort of thing you have to expect

10ThousandSpoons · 17/02/2024 07:09

galliverstravels · 17/02/2024 01:21

As others have pointed out, the name Karen has been dragged through the mud for years by this point. It is awful how embarrassed and low genuine people named Karen have begun to feel when doing something as simple as giving their name when asked. Why anyone would find it amusing to poke further fun at that is just bizarre. If that's really your sense of humour you really need to have a rethink and consider the actual impact places like Karen's Diner are having on the real people with the name (not me I should add, but someone very dear to me)
No doubt you won't care either way so I suggest you try this and then do a bit more thinking. Try putting your child's name, your partner's, your mum's, your dad's, your own. Then consider that's every single day for years and years and then they open a restaurant to really drive the point home.

Thank you

We just thought it would be a fun thing to do. It appeals to our sense of humour.

Weird sense of humour. Why don't you just sit at home and point out each others faults if that's your bag.
