Make me feel better about my new kitchen...

Yes I've posted before but I've lost my old log in details and can't find the thread.

Had a new kitchen fitted. Look wise I like it, more space too. But the gloss. Oh my god, the gloss. Why did I get it? DH can't understand there are handles for a reason and I spent most of my life getting rid of fingerprints.

Anyone own gloss and grew to like it?

Does it even look nice? Or does it look dated? There's no way DH will let me change it when we spent upwards of 6k a few months ago on it.

Any advice or even positive things to say about the new kitchen? This is before and after.

Seriously? Again?

Midnlghtrain · 26/01/2024 09:27

It looks much tidier than before!

drowninginsick · 26/01/2024 09:28

Looks nice, isn't there a way to prevent fingerprints, isn't it with baby oil or something? We have gloss and can't say I have an issue with fingerprints. Is he opening it by holding the door?

Daffodils234 · 26/01/2024 09:29

It's nice, but not my cup of tea. I prefer a shaker-style kitchen - these shiny cupboards feel too futuristic for me!

RedPinkPeach · 26/01/2024 09:30

Matt gets greasy fingerprints too, the people are the problem. Not the units 🤣

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 26/01/2024 09:30

Stop asking what other people think. It's only going to make you feel worse if someone says they don't like it.

Just live with it and look forward to the next new kitchen in however many year's time. It does its job, you don't love it - stop looking at it.

ThatsMintThat · 26/01/2024 09:30

@Midnlghtrain it was a mess while it was being done 😂

The OP was asking you to make her feel better about it, not tell her what you’d prefer! 🤦‍♀️

Ash099 · 26/01/2024 09:31

I had white gloss in my old house. I didn't notice finger prints. Depends on the lighting (that was a small kitchen). I prefer painted cabinets now but not because of potential finger prints. There must be a hack somewhere.

ThatsMintThat · 26/01/2024 09:32

@drowninginsick this is what I'm wondering.. if there is anything I can clean them with to try to prevent fingerprints!
I think he's opening them with the handle but just pushing them closed by the door, he says he doesn't know what he does and I've said be more mindful but he just does it without thinking 🤦🏼‍♀️

@OhItsOnlyCynthia you're probably right. I'm not doing my mental health any favours focusing on this kitchen!

It looks cool. You'll get used to it, when you spend a lot on something it is easy to feel uncomfortable about it for a while.

AlltheFs · 26/01/2024 09:34

I think life is too short to worry about fingerprints- just stop looking at it. We have a new kitchen, I don't sit there looking at it.

Gloss isn’t our vibe (we have a cottage) but it looks fine to me.

Flickersy · 26/01/2024 09:34

It was fine before, it's fine now, it would be wasteful to change it again.

Fashion some pull handles out of straps attached by screws to the back of the doors if the fingerprints are really bothering you?

Logainm · 26/01/2024 09:34

Either replace the kitchen yet again or calm down about fingerprints. Are you actually over-sensitised to the point where you’re going around looking for them? Honestly, you can’t police how your household opens and closes cupboards!

Daffodils234 · 26/01/2024 09:34

@MissingMoominMamma - "Does it even look nice? Or does it look dated?" - I replied and said it was nice, just that it wasn't my cup of tea. That isn't offensive - it's a subjective comment.

HeddaGarbled · 26/01/2024 09:36

Was this the one where you didn’t realise you had handles?

ThatsMintThat · 26/01/2024 09:37

@Logainm I think so, I do stand and almost look for fingerprints but quite often they are obvious. We have a 2 year old who touches the freezer a lot when she's wanting ice pops which is fine I expect that to get covered in prints, but some cupboards we barely touch are still getting covered!

Life really is too short to be making a second post about your gorgeous kitchen! Bottom line is you won't be getting it replaced so you just need to get on with it! I have a gloss kitchen and don't care if there are fingerprints because mine was the same as your original one except wood coloured - hated it! I only replaced the fronts on mine and when its getting done properly I will still be going for gloss.

ThatsMintThat · 26/01/2024 09:37

@Daffodils234 I wasn't offended

OP, your last thread on this went to over 200 replies. I'm not sure what else people can say.

It's not really about the kitchen, is it?

Daffodils234 · 26/01/2024 09:38

@ThatsMintThat - thank you - I didn't mean to cause offence (as other poster thought). It is a very nice kitchen :)

sunglassesonthetable · 26/01/2024 09:39

You don't need to change your kitchen! It looks fresh and modern.

I think you need to try and step back a bit ( mentally ) and look at what you have got. I mean that really kindly. I would be handing you a coffee in real life and saying , c'mon chill.

There's a nice new kitchen here! Maybe post in Housekeeping for a hack to help you keep on top of fingerprints.

Try and enjoy.

ThatsMintThat · 26/01/2024 09:39

@Whatevershallidowithmylife thank you Flowers I think it's partly as we spent so much on it and it was wanted/saved for so long (we've lived together 11 years and this is the first kitchen we've chosen ourselves and not just one we inherited) the last one was also originally a wood kitchen and I just painted it myself over lockdown so that was far from perfect with the chipping paint etc x

@sunglassesonthetable thank you ❤️ you sound like you would be a good friend in real life. I am having a bit of a wobble mentally at the moment with one thing and another going on, so possibly I maybe am hyperfocusing on the kitchen as a way of control kind of thing. Space wise other than the fridge being smaller, but it's not an issue really as we've just kept the old bigger fridge in the garage, it's much better than our old kitchen, we have a few empty cupboards where as our old kitchen was rammed. And I love the big drawers that can fit pans in easily. So there are positives. I think I maybe need to step back a bit as you say x
