Make me feel better about my new kitchen...

Yes I've posted before but I've lost my old log in details and can't find the thread.

Had a new kitchen fitted. Look wise I like it, more space too. But the gloss. Oh my god, the gloss. Why did I get it? DH can't understand there are handles for a reason and I spent most of my life getting rid of fingerprints.

Anyone own gloss and grew to like it?

Does it even look nice? Or does it look dated? There's no way DH will let me change it when we spent upwards of 6k a few months ago on it.

Any advice or even positive things to say about the new kitchen? This is before and after.

@Laurama91 out of curiosity. Are gloss at matte equally popular still or is matte overtaking now?

The company I work at now is small compared to previous so not as many options, if you wanted painted they're only available in matt. I'd say not as many gloss options. Which obviously makes matt more popular there. I do prefer the look of the matt door personally. But would never go for painted doors

At previous company, which was a lot bigger I'd say we did more gloss.

Current place does a super matt range which is good. We have a girl that has an issue that makes her sweat a lot and she put wet hand print on one and within a few minutes is disappeared.

Keep your kitchen but get rid of your husband, problem solved 😁

Parapapampam · 27/01/2024 10:24

Vinegar!

I inherited a white gloss kitchen, have discovered the best for cleaning is white vinegar. I bought a huge tub of the stuff and some spray bottles, put 1/3 vinegar 2/3 water into bottle, spray and wipe with microfibre cloth.

Works amazingly on stainless steel, windows and bathrooms too!

To add, I actually find it far easier to clean than my old painted shaker style doors where grime would collect in the grooves and if I scrubbed too hard the paint would start to come off!

I got my new kitchen about 8 years ago.Gloss doors! And no I’ve never grown to like them! They look constantly dirty. They do my head in. I’ve started pricing up how much it would cost to replace them, which is lots! 🙄

Somewhat similar- i have mirror front furniture in my bedroom and I absolutely hate it, constant fingerprints and I hate all the reflection/ light, feel like I need sunglasses 👓 😣

I remember your first thread but didn't post in it...
However this is an easy fix - just replace the doors starting with the ones used most often then spreading out as & when you can afford it

As for changing the doors you will need some sort of filler for the holes (silicone maybe to keep the holes 'full') & an ikea catalogue to get an idea of colours

Is the internal bits white or grey ?

RoseGoldEagle · 27/01/2024 07:41

Do YOU think it looks nice? I don’t like gloss, my parents have just gone for high gloss in their kitchen and they love it- so my opinion doesn’t matter! If 1000 people said it was gorgeous, would you feel better?

I also agree the baseboard lights look oddly clunky (?) And are spaced weird but couldn't work out if they were included in the £6k

🙈 though that's the opposite of helping ease your mind over the cabinet look, sorry

Jk8 · 27/01/2024 10:38

Sorry @RoseGoldEagle Quoted you instead for some reason

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 27/01/2024 10:44

Instead of the solid white backsplash I would do fancy chevron or hexagonal tile to tie everything together, it will also help distract the eye from any smudges.

Tinysoxxx · 27/01/2024 11:21

I went into a kitchen showroom and wanted a wooden slab kitchen door with a handle for this reason. No foils etc.
I want indestructible as we live rurally with lots of animals and children (who now like to cook for themselves). I have not the time or inclination to be dealing with fingerprints, so this thread has confirmed my choice. However all kitchens seem to be gloss/matt slab doors or shaker wood ones.

Wemetatascoutcamp · 27/01/2024 11:33

Its similar to mine (which replaced a horrendous beige units with wooden handles straight from the 80’s). We’ve had ours 6 or 7 years maybe and yes I do sometimes look and think there’s fingerprints on them (more so now we have a toddler but dh is equally a culprit!)- I just rub them off with a dry microfibre cloth.

Lemonyyellow · 27/01/2024 11:42

Op if it makes you feel better- we just got a new extension with new kitchen. Shaker style with matte cupboards. Omg the matte is a nightmare. Every water mark, finger print, anything , shows up. I’ve decided I will clean them once a week and that’s it. Any marks that appear before then have to wait. Because no one else actually really notices (or cares).

bluefrog11 · 27/01/2024 11:56

I wouldn’t choose it and I also think gloss is about 5-10 years out of date however it does still look nice. If a friend had it I wouldn’t think anything if it. Own it.

Emsbutterfly · 27/01/2024 12:11

I have a gloss kitchen but in white and did in my old place too (both put in by me) and I much prefer it to Matt, find it super easy to clean, and also if your seeing fingerprints /dirt it’s more motivating to just give it a quick wipe rather than letting it build up because you’re not noticing it as much. I find microfibre cloths the best for getting it non streaky :)

paintitblue · 27/01/2024 12:25

Here's your old thread. The photos are better in that one. Stop obsessing about finger prints!

Shufflebumnessie · 27/01/2024 14:32

Personally I think it looks great. I love the white gloss, the plinth lights and the practical height of the tap. I'd love a kitchen like yours!
I can't tell from the photos whether there are tiles on the wall or not. If not, could you consider a coloured glass splashback to break up the white?
We hope to have a similar kitchen fitted in the future and I'd like a teal / turquoise glass splash back to liven up the cabinets.
Something like these https://glassinspirations.org/gallery/

MrsB74 · 27/01/2024 16:28

We have had a gloss kitchen for over 10 years and I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed with finger prints. I just give them a good wipe down every weekend. Learn to live with it - as a PP has said it’s just a touch of buyer’s remorse after spending so much money! You’ll get used to it.

Mementomorissons · 27/01/2024 16:32

It's a really nice plain canvas, but you need some decorative bits now. A pot plant, ornaments or nice stack of pretty tea towels.

BoyMamma2 · 27/01/2024 17:15

I have the same kitchen and never notice fingerprints. I had wood before and found it a pain to clean. Mines been in for 5 years and it’s weathered far better than the wood.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 27/01/2024 18:28

I love a modern kitchen. Perhaps put DH in charge of cleaning the kitchen and he will start to use the handles? I like the look of gloss, but agree, cleaning wise, it can be a lot of work.

Mummasals · 27/01/2024 20:26

I have a fairly new kitchen that isn’t exactly glossy but certainly has a smoothness that shows a lot more than the old kitchen did. We’ve also got 3 kids under 6 and a messy sod of a husband - I see so much more grime than I used to, if water has splashed onto the doors it’s very noticeable and my toddler seems to walk everywhere with her hands on the walls or cupboards. I feel your pain but I think it looks gorgeous and you won’t always have a young child grubbing them up!

PieonaBarm · 27/01/2024 20:27

Windolene is your friend. Works wonders on gloss kitchens.

Llewellyn1 · 27/01/2024 21:21

My partner and I recently had our kitchen revamped for around £600 as we couldn’t afford to have it all replaced we chose to have it wrapped instead. I believe it’s a fairly new trade but if you looked into it would likely be cheaper than £600 as ours included bunkers etc. Maybe post on a local page to see if anyone offers a similar service :)

How do you find other threads by ops?

Sgtmajormummy · 28/01/2024 18:08

Treat it as you would glass, so use Glassex with Ammonia spray and paper towel or micro fibre cloth. Sorted.
