Make me feel better about my new kitchen...

Yes I've posted before but I've lost my old log in details and can't find the thread.

Had a new kitchen fitted. Look wise I like it, more space too. But the gloss. Oh my god, the gloss. Why did I get it? DH can't understand there are handles for a reason and I spent most of my life getting rid of fingerprints.

Anyone own gloss and grew to like it?

Does it even look nice? Or does it look dated? There's no way DH will let me change it when we spent upwards of 6k a few months ago on it.

Any advice or even positive things to say about the new kitchen? This is before and after.

@BestDIL really? That's good to know as online I've seen people using glass cleaner etc and have been looking on Amazon to see if there is any specific gloss cleaner. Is it just fairy liquid and water that's best?

I don't even use fairy liquid. Literally just a damp microfibre cloth. Nothing else needed.

SiobhanSharpe · 26/01/2024 10:09

It's very similar to my new kitchen OP and I'm really happy with mine. I don't notice the finger marks that much (no kids at home) and when I do a quick wipe with a damp cloth like a maxi fibre (?) one seems to sort it.
And unless they are actually dirty finger marks what's the harm?

sleepwellifyoucan · 26/01/2024 10:10

I have matt units and they seem even worse to keep clean, it's like they absorb grease. Your new kitchen looks lovely.

SiobhanSharpe · 26/01/2024 10:11

Microfibre cloth is what I meant!

TeaAndStrumpets · 26/01/2024 10:16

OP I hope others have reassured you but sometimes you have to let things go or you will wind yourself up.

We have a very nice Dualit kettle with a cream matt plastic knob. DH mostly makes the tea. I see him thoroughly wash his hands, then put the kettle on, it still eventually gets grubby. Every so often I give it a scrub. I always think how many cups of tea he makes me, so am grateful for that.

If your husband gets grubby marks on the cupboards, to me that implies that at least he is doing it while being useful in the kitchen! My DH will happily clean the kettle if I point it out, maybe yours can be prompted to clean up after himself? He'd soon start using the handles!

Either replace the kitchen yet again or calm down about fingerprints. Are you actually over-sensitised to the point where you’re going around looking for them? Honestly, you can’t police how your household opens and closes cupboards!

That's a bit overdramatic. You'd only have to replace the doors! 😉

Seriously though, I like the look of it. A slightly moistened microfibre cloth is great for removing fingerprints.

TeaAndStrumpets · 26/01/2024 10:21

TerfTalking please could you tell me what worktop you have? We have plenty of oily rags!

FarmGirl78 · 26/01/2024 10:30

Once upon a time I bought a black car. I was advised not to by my Auntie, because "you'll spend forever constantly cleaning off every speck of dirt." and "Every time you go to get in it you notice how even sightly dirty it is, and you'll be disappointed".

Nope. She was wrong. There was dust. There was dirt. There were even flecks of mud. But I didn't spend every spare second wiping it off. I wasn't disappointed. And I flippin loved that car.

Be me, don't be my Auntie. The sky will not fall in if there's fingerprints on your cupboard doors only you notice.

headcheffer · 26/01/2024 10:32

What you need my friend is window cleaner and a tea towel.

I used to have white gloss units and at the end of the day when I tidied the kitchen for the night I would quickly spray the most used cupboards (for us it was fridge, tea/coffee cupboard and tinned food cupboard) and quickly wipe down with a tea towel. 2 mins, done.

I have gloss cupboards and the secret is to use the handles 😂

Mapletreelane · 26/01/2024 10:46

Hello! I have cream gloss and the kid's fingerprints drive me crazy. They hang onto the cupboards when they open the doors. But...when ever I am at the sink cleaning up after mealtimes I give the handle areas a quick squirt of dettol surface spray and a wipe with warm soapy water, takes about 30 secs. I do a sweeping motion across all the doors at once. If you get that into your routine that will help x

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 26/01/2024 10:53

Everything is too clean and tidy.

Ding your counter and leave the crumbs out for a bit and fingerprints won't bother you.

This sounds like a joke, but seriously, when your house is newly 'done' it's easy to obsess over the little things. Once it looks like it's lived in, you'll get used to it.

PS I have white gloss and don't notice the fingerprints at all. But I do notice the drips of tea and coffee and hot chocolate....

Nannyfannybanny · 26/01/2024 10:55

Thirty years ago we had traditional wood, twenty years ago cream shaker,it got filthy, bil said that it was old fashioned had had its day,it was a cottage, I had range cooker, butler sink. Now 60s open plan bungalow, kitchen at the end of the living room. I wanted white thought it might be too clinical, went for vanilla gloss, darker than cream, have handles they get filthy! I do wish I had gone for white looking back . However I have no gas an induction hob, nothing gets dirty like all my "gas" kitchens did. I've changed the accessories, twice in the 10 years, I think that's the way to go...you can get a completely different look, go a few quid.I really want a rustic browny/grey worktop I've seen, will tie in nicely with the living room furniture and flooring. Everywhere is white/grey I did this before the grey "fashion". I have a friend who hates housework, she has had new kitchen with solid wood worktops, enough said 😂

Fluffyc1ouds · 26/01/2024 11:37

Kitchen cupboard doors get mucky regardless of the style in my opinion. Although it's not my cup of tea, I'm really envious of how easy yours must be to clean! Mine are traditional, painted wood, full of grooves that are a nightmare to clean. You can just keep a microfibre cloth to hand and give them a quick wipe. I have to go at mine with scrubbers, hot water and cotton buds.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/01/2024 09:31

The OP was asking you to make her feel better about it, not tell her what you’d prefer! 🤦‍♀️

In fairness she did also ask if it looked too dated - and yes, the 'all grey' look was starting to go out of trend about 3 years ago. Honestly not really sure why you'd spend £6k replacing grey cupboards and floorboards with....grey cupboards and floorboards.

scorpiogirly · 26/01/2024 11:56

I'll make you feel better. If I had a nice kitchen like that, I'd be in my oils cleaning the fingerprints off.

I desperately need mine done but don't even know where to start. I've been putting it off thinking it would cost me about 20k. Did you really get a new kitchen for 6 grand?

PremiumRaa · 26/01/2024 11:58

It does look dated. The black worktops and sink don't help. Can you change the worktops for some light coloured quartz or granite?

As for the fingerprints get some microfibres cloths.

SpookySpoon22 · 26/01/2024 12:00

I would absolutely love a kitchen like yours. It's gorgeous - can we trade? 😂

nokidshere · 26/01/2024 12:02

I just keep a microfibre cloth to hand, just use it dry, fingerprints polish off really easily. I often wipe mine over while I'm making a coffee.

notanothernana · 26/01/2024 12:06

I've had white gloss for about 15 years now. Just wipe it over when I get a moment. I feel it's lasting really well.

Parentofeanda · 26/01/2024 12:14

personally i prefer cottage shaker looks to modern but it isnt bad and i do like it for other houses

Parentofeanda · 26/01/2024 12:15

I also dont like Grey, My kitchen is Sage green and i dont think i could go back, id either stay green or go cream and white as i like bright places

Parentofeanda · 26/01/2024 12:16

I Like the Lights, good addition for the style of kitchen and the sink is nice

JadeSeahorse · 26/01/2024 12:19

ThatsMintThat I’m assuming the picture on the right is your new kitchen.

If so your cupboard doors look very similar to mine which was done last May and is our second gloss kitchen. Is your colour cashmere too? ❤️

As a very long time owner of gloss kitchens - previous one was cream - please don’t bother with things like baby oil etc. What you want is a thin towelling type tea towel. Just mix a weak solution of washing up liquid with warm water. Wipe your doors over with a damp cloth using the solution mix and then quickly dry off with the tea towel. Keeps them looking fab!

There is only the 2 of us now so I only need to do this twice per week and only do the doors that need it. Also our handles are built in ridges at the top of each cupboard door which are fab for keeping clean and again just need a quick wipe over.

Your kitchen looks fab!
