To buy this when I don’t know if baby is a girl or boy?

Lighthearted.

I’ve seen an absolutely gorgeous fleece jacket. It is definitely more suited for a girl.

I don’t know the sex of the baby yet, so it could be a total waste of a purchase if it’s a boy. Though I’m sure new with tags it would sell very well on Vinted or make a nice gift for my friend expecting at the same time. I am just worried that if I leave it, it will go out of stock!

AIBU to buy it?

A photo or link would help!

When you say 'more suited for a girl' what do you mean? (And why does it matter, really?)

gardenfoundry · 23/01/2024 16:11

Sod it, buy it. If it's a boy then you can put it in the loft until it can be used.

WhollyGlorious · 23/01/2024 16:12

Link? But if it’s for your baby, buy it.

If you really think about it, letting the baby’s genitals dictate what colour fleece it wears is a bit ridiculous.

Passers by won’t know if the baby is a boy or a girl, it won’t matter if they assume incorrectly, and the baby won’t remember so there won’t be any lasting trauma… so long as you like the fleece, dress the baby in it!

Sorry all!

If you can afford it, buy it.
When my sons were born I had lots of stuff given to me by my sister who'd had a daughter.

Boys can have a poonami all up the back of a pink vest as much as they can over a blue one. 🤷

IncompleteSenten · 23/01/2024 16:14

X post.
I think that's cute. I'd have happily put my sons in that when they were babies.

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 23/01/2024 16:15

If you’re prepared to use it for either boy or girl then buy it, if not then don’t buy stuff to clutter your home unless you need it. You’ll end up seeing loads of nice clothes so you do need to draw a line if you don’t like waste.

At the end of the day though it’s personal
choice so it’s not really an AIBU

JamJar59 · 23/01/2024 16:15

I wouldn’t personally (until I knew the gender) but that’s just me.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/01/2024 16:16

I'd have dressed my son in that. It's soooo cute. Definitely get it :)

marshmallowfinder · 23/01/2024 16:17

Yep, just buy it. My son mostly wore his sister's baby clothes for the first couple of months, as I bloody well wasn't shelling out for a whole new lot! It's fine for either.

DiamondGazette · 23/01/2024 16:17

What a lovely little jacket. A baby boy could wear that.

toppitytop · 23/01/2024 16:26

If you do dress a boy in it, just be prepared for some people to think he's a girl. Newborn boys and girls are pretty indistinguishable. But if you're ok with that, go for it.

ActDottie · 23/01/2024 16:40

How likely is it to go out of stock? You can find out if it’s a boy or girl at 16 weeks ish now so depends how long you have to wait.

LemonLinnet · 23/01/2024 16:43

That is really cute and a boy could still wear that (maybe with blue bottoms if all the gender nonsense bothers you).

Moveoverdarlin · 23/01/2024 16:44

There is no way I would put that on a baby boy. It couldn’t be more girly.

But if you love it, buy it. Worse case put it on Vinted or give it away.

Sandtownnel · 23/01/2024 16:46

That very clearly looks like a girl jacket to me. Off course this is MN and boys wear this too.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2024 16:53

It's a nice mix of colours. It'd be fine to dress a baby of either sex in it but if you personally wouldn't put a boy in it then it's up you whether to get it and then give it away or sell it if that's what you have. Other peoples opinions don't matter too much.

IncompleteSenten · 23/01/2024 16:57

And why not though? My sons wore stuff in all sorts of colours.
They're babies. Anything is good enough to be thrown up on and shit all over.

Maybe it's because they're adults now that I look back and see all the stuff that really didn't matter at all. So much felt like it was essential at the time. Of that, yeah some was but most wasn't. A rainbow jacket is fully in the "wasn't" pile.

KThnxBye · 23/01/2024 16:59

It could easily be more girly. It could say I AM A GIRL on it. If it did, I wouldn’t put a boy in it. Otherwise, I can’t see a problem in putting a baby of any kind in a cute fluffy stripy cardigan. Is it the bee? I mean, Queen bees do get all the good press but I’m certain bees come in male and female varieties. And I know both men and women beeekeepers. A rainbow is definitely not male or female. I genuinely thought we’d moved on from “pink is for girls but never for boys, but blue is for boys and also everyone else”?

mathanxiety · 23/01/2024 17:01

I bought a gorgeous pink snowsuit with sleeves that were really easy to put on and take off (lined with polyester lining as opposed to flannel or fleece) when DD1 was a toddler and passed it down to DS when he fit into it.

People always mistook DD for a boy and complimented DS's very pretty looks (long eyelashes, big blue eyes) when they wore it. Neither of the DCs cared one bit. I had a good laugh about it.

SouthLondonMum22 · 23/01/2024 17:02

Go for it. Nothing girly about a rainbow or a bee and a baby boy won't care anyway.

UnicornPug · 23/01/2024 17:05

Buy it. When I was pregnant with my second I spent a fortune on a double breasted velvet skater style coat for my 2.5 year old daughter as I was certain my second would wear it too. Well he turned out to be a boy and would have looked ridiculous in it 😂 Still made a good story and the coat brought me so much joy when she wore it. You’ll either pass it on or sell it!

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 23/01/2024 17:20

You’ve got a 50/50 chance of baby being a girl and you can always sell it/give it to someone else if baby is a boy.

When I was pregnant with no3 I saw the most beautiful line of matching tartan clothes on sale. I thought they’d be perfect for Christmas photos, so I bought DD a dress, DS a shirt and a lovely baby dress for baby 3. Of course, DC3 turned out to be a boy!

Here's my little boy in some of his 'girly' outfits just to show I meant what I said 😅 He also had a rainbow one with a matching hat but I can't find a pic of that one.
