To think it's no wonder people fly tip?

Recycling day today - I put my bin out, along with a big cardboard box from a delivery that I'd flattened. It was too big to go in the bin, and thick cardboard which I couldn't break down. It's been left by the road, along with a bag of recycling from a neighbour who is waiting for a new bin. There's more cardboard been left across the street - looks like a microwave box that's filled with cans, judging by the few around it.

It's so frustrating - all of it could have been taken and recycled but now there's plastic bottles, cans and cardboard scattered all over the street! Can't get a skip appointment for love nor money so what are people meant to do?

My cardboard is going to work with me tomorrow - the house has an open fire so it'll be burned which I hate but there's nowhere to store it and it won't fit in the bin, especially not with another two weeks' recycling!

No wonder people resort to fly tipping when it feels so impossible to get rid of stuff through the waste collection!

No excuse. I would have cut the box up with a bread knife. Or trod on it to fold it and asked a neighbour if they had room in their bin.

TheCurlyKnobhead · 17/01/2024 19:46

No excuse, take it to a recycling centre

FuckingHellAdele · 17/01/2024 19:47

Well no, fly tippers are scatters, no excuses.

Lovemusic82 · 17/01/2024 19:49

There’s absolutely no excuse for fly tipping whatsoever ever. I didn’t have enough room in my bins today so I took my rubbish to the tip which is what most people do?

greengreengrass25 · 17/01/2024 19:49

No excuse

Fly tippers are a disgrace

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 17/01/2024 19:49

Nope. There are ways to recycle stuff responsibly.

Shame they didn't take it all though. It's a bit pedantic!

anniegun · 17/01/2024 19:49

Take it to the tip! Why would it be at all acceptable to fly tip

lightinthebox · 17/01/2024 19:50

Before I could drive (so couldn’t drive to a recycling centre) I would spend time cutting up cardboard into smaller bits, it’s not hard and you can fit more in the bin. If we still had too much then we’d keep it in the house till the bin was emptied.

Refuse collectors are right to not take extra rubbish when your bins full, imagine if every house did it?

There is never, ever, an excuse for fly tipping.

Kalevala · 17/01/2024 19:52

I fold up large cardboard boxes so one end fits in the recycling box. Neighbours without bins could ask to add to someone else's until they arrange to get a bin. That said, my local area isn't as fussy, my neighbours have loads of cardboard out in various boxes, they don't bother flattening it.

QuestionableMouse · 17/01/2024 19:52

Just to be clear - I'm not condoning fly tipping, nor would I ever do it but after today I can kinda understand why people would when stuff feels impossible to get rid of the proper way!

I can sympathise, although I would never fly tip. We pay a fuckload for council tax, and the bin men aren't great.

The nearest tip is a 30 mile round trip and they only open 4 days a week. It's hardly convenient to take stuff - and they don't allow vans in case it's 'commercial'. DH only has a van!

soupfiend · 17/01/2024 19:54

We have to frequently go down the tip with our stuff because the bin we ordered nearly a year ago (and paid for) has not arrived and they wont take recycling without it (the other bin blew away -not plastic bins - because they are not fit for purpose)

So I drive (more pollution) to drop off stuff down the communal bins near the station and at the tip - if I can get a slot which I cant aways

Total waste of everyones time.

ilovemyspace · 17/01/2024 19:54

I presume your council has details online of how to recycle?

And if It was too big to go in the bin, and thick cardboard which I couldn't break down ffs what was it made of??

If you have a problem with the council not takng recycling, then put in an email to them?

Everyone's bins are rammed because it's the first recycling collection since before Christmas! The damn box is bigger than the bin unfortunately and it's such thick card it won't fold much

The recycling facility in my city's the same OP Sad

I completely agree that fly tipping's wrong, but when they made the ridiculous "booking system" permanent after covid I said this would be the result - and so it's proved

I feel that! Ours is open four days a week too, but you have to book an appointment in advance and they're like hen's teeth at the moment!

People have to have slots to go to the tip?!?!?!

Plantlady10 · 17/01/2024 19:56

I agree in that some areas seem unnecessarily picky about what waste they pick up! I currently live somewhere where large cardboard boxes can be left next to your bin, they also collect small electrical items/batteries left on top of the bin. And they collect glass. Where I used to live did none of this, and you'd really struggle if you didn't have a car to get to the tip/bottle banks

Iheartmysmart · 17/01/2024 19:57

No excuses for fly tipping. But where I am we haven’t had our recycling collected for the best part of six weeks. It’s a development of flats so now people are just putting their recycling on top of the bins because we have no storage in our flats and we aren’t permitted to put anything in the communal areas. There is rubbish absolutely everywhere. All over the grounds and in the hedgerows.

The council were supposed to respond to my complaint asking when our next collection would be three weeks ago!

I’ve managed to get a slot at the tip on Sunday and have probably more cardboard and plastic than will fit in my car.

It's from around a fridge freezer and is thick heavy cardboard! It won't cut with scissors and believe me, I tried (and unfortunately broke my kitchen scissors in half! 🙁)

I’ve never heard of needing an appointment, we just drive to ours.

I love the recycling centre as they have a shop where we’ve gotten amazing stuff (chest of drawers for £7!).

Afraid so - or at least you do in all the areas around me

Ask what the actual purpose of this is and answer comes there none
