To think it's no wonder people fly tip?

Recycling day today - I put my bin out, along with a big cardboard box from a delivery that I'd flattened. It was too big to go in the bin, and thick cardboard which I couldn't break down. It's been left by the road, along with a bag of recycling from a neighbour who is waiting for a new bin. There's more cardboard been left across the street - looks like a microwave box that's filled with cans, judging by the few around it.

It's so frustrating - all of it could have been taken and recycled but now there's plastic bottles, cans and cardboard scattered all over the street! Can't get a skip appointment for love nor money so what are people meant to do?

My cardboard is going to work with me tomorrow - the house has an open fire so it'll be burned which I hate but there's nowhere to store it and it won't fit in the bin, especially not with another two weeks' recycling!

No wonder people resort to fly tipping when it feels so impossible to get rid of stuff through the waste collection!

Leave the box out in the rain until it softens, fold or tear up and put in your bin.

If your recycling is wet they refuse your bin!

There’s absolutely no excuse for fly tipping whatsoever ever. I didn’t have enough room in my bins today so I took my rubbish to the tip which is what most people do?

Presumably by car?
For a few items or a cardboard box that didn't fit in the domestic recycling bin?
How nonsensical is that...

I agree councils make it too hard to get rid of stuff. My London council used to take most 'bulky' items by appointment, 3 free trips a year then you'd have to pay a little bit.

Now they have a really limited list of bulky things they will take, anything else has to go to the tip. We are in London, loads of people don't have cars, including me. If something is too heavy to carry and they won't take it away, what are you supposed to do? People don't have the money or inclination to get taxis, even supposing the item fits.

Good point, and in my situation you couldnt turn up in a taxi because you have to book your slot and put your car reg in, how are you going to do that without knowikng what car is coming for you!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2024 20:28

There's no excuse for fly tipping but it does sound like the waste disposal in your area isn't up to scratch.

Where I am, cardboard too large for the bin (smaller sized wheelie, not a box) can be left by it and does get picked up. They didn't miss many collections during the holiday period (if any) except the brown garden waste which won't be picked up till next week - a bit annoying as we pay extra for it and I had loads of chopping back to do. But I was able to take 4 carloads to the recycling centre this weekend no problem.

However there probably needs to be more responsibility placed on manufacturers and distributors to be responsible for dealing with large packaging. In some cases you can get items delivered, unpacked and the packaging removed.

HairyQueenofSnots · 17/01/2024 20:28

Gotta agree.

We have:

  • rubbish collections every 2 weeks
  • recycling every 4 weeks
  • cardboard every 4 weeks
  • green and kitchen waste every 2 weeks - but a different day to the others

They won't take:

  • recyling that has not been washed and dried
  • wet cardboard
  • anything left by the side of the bin, no matter how it's left
  • any bin where the lid doesn't close fully and easily

All bins need to be tidied away and cannot be left in front of the house, except during collection day. So you need to try and keep on top of the schedule to know which of the four bins you need to wheel out that day/week.

It's resulted in a never ending run to the recycling centre which has just stopped the appointment madness. Everyone in the street, all individually taking excess recyling to the centre - all in seperate vehicles.

It drives me mad!

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 17/01/2024 20:28

I'm pretty sure that most of the fly tippers aren't normally law-abiding people driven to their wits end by difficult bin collection, but just criminals posing as legitimate (but suspiciously cheap) waste removal companies who've been paid by gullible individuals to take their rubbish away.

Always check, because if anything with your name on it gets flytipped then you can be held liable.

What you need for this job is a Stanley knife. Just be sure to do it outside on a paved surface and try not to chop your fingers off at the same time!!

I presume your council has details online of how to recycle?

And if It was too big to go in the bin, and thick cardboard which I couldn't break down ffs what was it made of??

If you have a problem with the council not takng recycling, then put in an email to them?

I had some cardboard the other day which was so thick there's no way I could have broken it down or cut it. It does exist...I could get it into 4 sections and luckily the recycling guys took it from next to my bin.

I guess you could leave it in the rain until it breaks down enough to get in the bin, but then I know quite a few councils won't take wet cardboard.

It seems to really vary by postcode, our recycling crew always take extra folded cardboard left out, I always wonder if it's because we tip at Christmas Grin

DaphneMoo · 17/01/2024 20:31

I have picked 8 bags of rubbish from my street this week ( and there is more). The council are useless, nearly all the rubbish was recycling that had blown in the wind ( we now have to have it out by 7 am but collection can be anytime between 7 am and 7pm) but they won't pick up any that's blowing about. There is also food waste that's not been collected possibly because in wrong container which is blowing and that's my next job. The tip is also appt only. The only positive is they are good at collecting the bags of rubbish the volunteer litter pickers collect, but we are doing their bloody job for them.

That's also a good point - my skip is the same! 🙁

The first black block is the car reg!

This sounds very familiar. After the recycling "collection" here it always looks like they've just got a hold of all the stupid little shitty collection boxes and tipped them across the street, there is that much waste left lying around.

Needmorelego · 17/01/2024 20:35

"Take it to the tip"
Oh yes - the solution for car owners.
What about non car owners 🙄🤔

Jook · 17/01/2024 20:36

For balance..

Have to say, no complaints here. Bin collectors are cheerful and accommodating, always take additional recycling items that don’t fit in the bin. Local tip is a rock up service, no appointments required. They’ve also just done away with charges which is a result. DH goes to the tip once a week on average because we’re renovating and always have loads of waste.

I did actually pay for the waste to be removed but they took my old fridge and "forgot" the cardboard 🙄😔

People saying they can just drive to the tip whenever are very lucky. It's appointment only here and has been for years. I can't drive any more due to disability and the only way I've been able to get rid of large items is booking and occasional bulky waste collection which costs £40. If I didn't have the money to do this I would be really stuck. It's easy to make assumptions that everyone can drive, has money etc. I don't condone fly tipping and I've never done it but I can understand how some people might be completely stuck and not be able to get rid of items if they're not fortunate enough to drive or have friends or family to help all the money to book bulky waste collections.

Ah my Stanley knife is currently living at my sister's! I really need to get it back.

A booking system for the tip is RIDICULOUS. We live in the suburbs of a city and have two within a 10 minute drive. Very easy to access them and they have decent hours.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2024 20:39

That's bad, did you try to get them to come back for it?

HairyQueenofSnots · 17/01/2024 20:40

If you Google 'HWRC Booking' you start to get a sense of how many councils have moved to the booking system. And yes, it's a stupid system.

That sounds great. If our bin lids aren’t completely closed we get one warning. If you do it again you get fined!
Our black bins are tiny and only get emptied once a fortnight, I’m at the tip every other weekend despite recycling everything I can.
After Christmas our cardboard bag was full so I folded up the rest of the cardboard and placed it inside one of the bigger boxes, they left it. They were talking about going to 3 weekly collections!

We have a collection weekly and they take whatever you leave out. So if my cardboard bin is full (and it doesn't have to have the lid put on. I just leave any extra next to it or in another cardboard box. Glass and plastic/foil etc is in sacks and can leave as much as you want and the same for clothes. Food waste is a bin but mine is nowhere near full anyway. Then general waste is black bags as much as you want although most people only leave 1 bag out as most things can be recycled. I don't have a car and only a small garden so I'd struggle if they didn't collect.

soupfiend · 17/01/2024 20:40

Not just that, but if you're mainly housebound or disabled, so dont drive, you're more likely to rely on home deliveries for goods which means more packaging which means more recycling to get rid of

In my case, I do order a lot online because there just arent any shops around here and shops in general are pretty shit and just dont have in them the things you need, so the amount of cardboard we have and packaging and polystyrene etc etc is huge.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 17/01/2024 20:45

These threads always make me appreciate our council. We have weekly general waste and recycling collections, there was no change to that over Christmas. We can also have up to 5 'bulky items' like mattresses or furniture collected free of charge every 2 months.

Growlybear83 · 17/01/2024 20:45

I have a lot of deliveries, some in large and very thick cardboard boxes. I've yet to find a box that can't be flattened down and cut up. Every single box or carton that goes into our recycling bin is folded or flattened before it goes in to maximise space. There are mini recycling centres all over the place nowadays - there's never an excuse to fly tip.

Bobthethird · 17/01/2024 20:46

we don't drive so no tip runs. three kids, Xmas, big house sort out. We've got rubbish bags that won't fit in the bin. They're recycling so clean. Double bagged in black bags and we'll fit then into the bin over the next few weeks. It's an us problem not an excuse to chuck them somewhere to make them someone else's problem. We've also got big cardboard and polystyrene from new beds. V grateful to have a garage and i realise that's a luxury for some, but still it is a me problem to dispose of that rubbish safely, not leave it outside to be blown away or dumped over a railway embankment.
If your cardbnoard is plasticy, flatten it to open it then get it wet. If its normal cardbaord, get it wet. then stamp it dowm and squash it down. It'll dry compacted so take up less space.
Your neighbour needs to keep their excess waste in their own home and try to fit it in the bin next week or speak to a neighbour who uses less bin space or apply for a larger bin if they qualify or hire a skip or sort a tip run or take two tins a day when they walk to the shop and put them in the public bins. Not leave them to be scattered across the street for some poor animal to get stuck in
