To think it's no wonder people fly tip?

Recycling day today - I put my bin out, along with a big cardboard box from a delivery that I'd flattened. It was too big to go in the bin, and thick cardboard which I couldn't break down. It's been left by the road, along with a bag of recycling from a neighbour who is waiting for a new bin. There's more cardboard been left across the street - looks like a microwave box that's filled with cans, judging by the few around it.

It's so frustrating - all of it could have been taken and recycled but now there's plastic bottles, cans and cardboard scattered all over the street! Can't get a skip appointment for love nor money so what are people meant to do?

My cardboard is going to work with me tomorrow - the house has an open fire so it'll be burned which I hate but there's nowhere to store it and it won't fit in the bin, especially not with another two weeks' recycling!

No wonder people resort to fly tipping when it feels so impossible to get rid of stuff through the waste collection!

Can the people delivering not take it away

That's what I usually do.?

Yes, they were meant to but they took the old fridge away and "forgot" the cardboard!

How annoying

No excuse

Fly tippers are a disgrace

This. No ifs and buts. Utter scumbags.

My husband owns land and people often fly tip. They’re the scum of the earth. Some bastard actually dumped a horse once!

I know log burners are loathed on MN but mine solves the issue of disposing of paper, cardboard & waste wood, while helpfully heating my sitting room at the same time.

Our council has closed all our small recycling sites, closed the local tip to the public, and imposed appts at the one remaining site, 17 miles away. It has no pedestrian access. Tesco now only has Sally Army bins for clothes & shoes.

Recycling is generally becoming more of a challenge.

kisstheblarney · 19/01/2024 02:13

I've recently loved, previous council was appointment only, but it worked brilliantly! Now it's anytime, which also works well.

The answer for you, I'm not sure! Is it a case of going on really early when more appointments are available?

OP lives in a flat and doesnt have her own outside space

So a massive fridge sized thick piece of card, bit like a floppy wet carpet, even if she has somewhere to get it wet, she then drags up the stairs and leaves it where to dry out?

I suggested the bathroom, but really I've yet to find a piece of cardboard which can't be cut up with a knife. I worked in an inward goods department, we spent a good part of the day cutting cardboard. Fridges generally really aren't "massive" either, especially if she lives in a flat. There are really simple solutions to this problem, but OP seems to have an answer as to why she can't do any of them - despite the fact that the rest of us seem to manage!

Yep.

Nightmare in our city.

Sat and Sun are the very worst time to turn up to a tip mid morning with a car load of stuff. You will either get cars queuing

Its like that every day in our city. I’ve been on a Monday and it was rammed. Thursday, l had to give up and go home as we get parking tickets if we try and queue. Fridays are always hideous.

Its like they make it as hard as possible to go.🤷🏻‍♀️Also it used to open until 4:30. Now it’s started shutting at 3.30.

Why should I tell you that? Everything I've said is true.

Because if we know where you lived we could possibly make helpful suggestions of other local places or ways you could get rid of your cardboard.

Do you actually want to get rid of it, or just want to vent your frustration? Let US help YOU!

Oakbeam · 19/01/2024 11:03

I use a bread knife. It didn’t cost a fortune.

We are limited to two visits to the tip per month, that and the distance we need to travel to get there is a good incentive to get as much in the bins as possible.

gardenfoundry · 19/01/2024 11:44

Our local tips are also appointment driven, and if you don't have a car you can't get there - and even better yet - they won't let you in!

My recycling men are very good compared to where I used to live in London. They'll pick up boxes that are hard to break down and just chuck them in the lorry, and don't leave recycling strewn across the pavements and roads after a bag breaks. They actually take some pride in their work.

justsaying2023 · 19/01/2024 12:14

We can't access the tip on foot (not allowed its vehicles only) and can't drive, fortunately we have managed to find people that will drive us in but it isn't ideal. I will confess to being tempted to leave it at the workers hut in the entrance, that's as close to fly tipping I get!

RadiatorHead · 19/01/2024 13:15

The OP didn’t ask whether it was ok to fly tip, she commented that it’s no wonder people do it. I tend to agree tbh. When we needed to get rid of our old sofa years ago, we couldn’t fit it in our car to take it to the tip. It wasn’t good enough to sell as it was about 10 years old and a bit saggy. I listed it on FB marketplace for free, noting all the marks, and someone collected it. It was certainly cheaper than the £40 the council wanted for collecting it!

The amount of council tax we pay, I think each household should get one ‘free’ collection of large items per year. Could be something like a sofa or a mattress. That would reduce fly tipping.
