To think Saltburn was a bit shit

I don’t watch films that often, but watched on Amazon Prime largely due to Carey Mulligan/Rosamund Pike…

It’s visually good, but felt rushed/unbelievable towards the end…

It’s just not convincing - particularly ‘Oliver’…

The main guy was not well cast.
It was shocking for the sake of it.
Yes it was quite shite.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 09/01/2024 21:23

Evelyn waugh was the master at that stuff.. This was like a very pretty toddlers party.

hohohowheniscmascoming · 09/01/2024 21:25

Loved it sorry

GotMooMilk · 09/01/2024 21:26

I really loved it.

Takoneko · 09/01/2024 21:27

I really liked it too.

KatyPerryMenopause · 09/01/2024 21:28

It was done on Charisma Casting apparently so Barry had the riz! Wink
He looked like he'd had a very hard paper round.
Weird as he seemed so young/vulnerable in Banshees.
We loved it though. It bonded us a family when we all went Eww! at the same bits whilst squealing.
Mixture of Ripley/Brideshead/Six degrees of separation/Israel Rank-KHAC- HTKYF (Bella Mackie).
Rosamund Pike was wearing a weird fascinator at the Golden Globes as she wasn't sure her face would heal from skiing accident. Looked like she'd just come from REG's funeral! Grin

asquideatingdough · 09/01/2024 21:29

I thought Rosamund Pike was fantastic and Barry Keoghan did a great job with a difficult role (and the nude dancing etc was exploitative). But so many elements were just gratuitous and the pacing was weird- so much time spent setting the scene at Oxford and then the main dramatic events were totally rushed.

Also too many films these days seem to think that splashing a bit of menstrual blood around is edgy and sexy rather than icky or banal (as it is in real life), eg Fair Play.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/01/2024 21:29

It doesn't add up properly and is quite strange but interesting nonetheless

catwithflowers · 09/01/2024 21:29

I really enjoyed it. I don't get all the comparisons to Brideshead though. BR is one of my favourite books but apart from having a very rich family with a beautiful house and an outsider friend, the two stories don't have that much in common.

1975wasthebest · 09/01/2024 21:29

I found it surprisingly mild and a bit dull, so different to PYW. But I loved Rosamund Pike and I’m hoping she gets an Oscar nomination for this.

viktoria · 09/01/2024 21:33

Loved it!
Rosamunde Pike had the best lines
Jacob Elordi - who I previously thought was just a pretty face, but not a great actor - was fantastic
Barry K is a great actor but was too old

I actually didn't find it too outrageous

The one thing I didn't like was that the Film was 4:3 rather than 16:9

Angrywife · 09/01/2024 21:42

Thought it was incredibly boring and trite

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 09/01/2024 21:42

It was the second worst film I saw last year. Bonkers for all the wrong reasons.

The worst was Dream Scenario.

glossypeach · 09/01/2024 21:44

I loved it but I suppose I’m likely the target audience as a 26 year old female. I mean it’s probably for teen girls, but I do like YA style fiction. I have a poor attention span and during movies/shows I usually have to be on my phone as I can’t focus on just the tv. I watched Saltburn and I was hooked, I didn’t pick up my phone once so you know it was good! It was odd but the ending had me baffled as I wasn’t expecting it. I keep thinking about it for days after as it was a bit of a mind fuck!

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 09/01/2024 21:45

Visuals and soundtrack were fabulous, cast were fabulous (although Keoghan is the new Philip Seymour Hoffman for me in that the sight of him actually makes me dry heave - poor lad, I don't know what it is about his face but he gives me the CREEEEPS like nothing else), but the story was all over the fucking place - like someone read the Talented Mr Ripley, took LSD then fell down a conspiracy hole on Reddit whilst cry-wanking. Just nonsense and quite derivative under all the weird sex stuff.

Richard E Grant and Rosamund Pike were fucking hilarious though, real jobbing actors doing what they could with what they had and making it work. I slightly get the feeling they were in it as a favour to Fennel - no doubt their families all plag bridge together 😂

Rest of the cast were gorgeous but dull and going through the motions. Keoghan was very good actually, suitably sinister and pathetic by turns, and sometimes both at once - I was genuinely cringing inside out at some points, and thay shows he was doing something! But all that good work was totally ruined at the end by it turning out he had been an evil mastermind all along, which undercut so much prior that had been actually interesting and affecting.

Basically it was a potentially brilliant film let down by the fact that the writer hadn't actually finished thinking it through before they started filming IMO.

User1775 · 09/01/2024 21:47

It was fun but would have been TERRIBLE without RP and REG who were on fine form

MeridianB · 09/01/2024 21:48

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant aside, it was dreadful. But I love that it’s brought fresh success for Sophie Ellis Bextor ❤️

Alicesmagicmushroom · 09/01/2024 21:50

I thought it was such good fun, didn’t take itself seriously at all which was why it was so enjoyable to watch.

Elvanseshortage · 09/01/2024 21:52

I feel sorry for young people who think this film is fresh or edgy. Hardly any of it is original. It’s based on so many other (better) things.

Rosamund Pike and RE Grant were great though.

Oh same, I had to physically turn away from the screen at points.

Yep.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/01/2024 21:57

I've got this bookmarked to watch tomorrow morning.

I shall keep an open mind. I'm only really watching it as I love Reece Shearsmith.

Allfur · 09/01/2024 21:58

Most things are influenced by stuff that comes before, that's art

upwardsonwards · 09/01/2024 21:59

I called the end quite early but I didn’t see the middle coming 🤣🤣

Well yes but surely the idea should be to cleverly reference, pastiche or develop it somehow, not just rip it off.
