To think Saltburn was a bit shit

I don’t watch films that often, but watched on Amazon Prime largely due to Carey Mulligan/Rosamund Pike…

It’s visually good, but felt rushed/unbelievable towards the end…

It’s just not convincing - particularly ‘Oliver’…

OP posts:
GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 09/01/2024 22:00

I agree, OP, it was bad.

Weak plot; so many scenes and lines that were cliched or hammy; just not credible in any joined together way.

The sexy/shocking scenes were gratuitous, not plot-related eg Oliver shagging the grave but we never really find out why/how he loved Felix.

I thought Emerald Fennell was smarter than that….

Almostwelsh · 09/01/2024 22:01

I really enjoyed it. It's a dark comedy, if you take it too seriously you'll be too busy picking at plot holes to enjoy it.

Turmerictolly · 09/01/2024 22:02

I thought the plot was ridiculous and Keoghan totally miscast.

MoonriseKingdom · 09/01/2024 22:03

No where near as good as Promising Young Woman which actually had a point to make. However, I thought it was great fun and Rosamund Pike was brilliant.

For anyone who enjoyed watching Rosamund Pike in this I would recommend ‘I care a lot’ which is a dark comedy with a serious subject.

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 09/01/2024 22:03

Yeah maybe you’re right @Almostwelsh as I definitely don’t get dark humour.

It was very derivative as well - felt like an endless run of Gosford Park, Brideshead, Talented Mr Ripley with a touch of Addams Family!!

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 09/01/2024 22:04

@MoonriseKingdom - great recommendation for I Care A Lot. It’s fabulous.

verityswims · 09/01/2024 22:04

I thought it was great after not expecting to like it because of the mixed reviews.
Visually appealing and elements of Brideshead and Talented Mr Ripley. Conclusion felt rushed.

I've enjoyed the discussion on another thread!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 09/01/2024 22:18

Loved it until the last ten minutes.

SecondChancesAtLife · 09/01/2024 22:25

I thought the naked dance scene at the end was the best bit - I laughed my head off.

Agree it could’ve been better written and the Felix character was pretty weak.

Also totally creeped out by Barry K. My dd was trying to describe him to me and said he looks like an evil sprite - she was right!

IcedPurple · 09/01/2024 22:28

PoinsettiaLives · 09/01/2024 20:59

I didn’t like it much, just a rip off of TMR and Barry K was really badly miscast. I liked Rosamund Pike, Richard E Grant and Jacob Elordi.

Yes. Completely miscast. And a good decade too old for the role.

Supersimkin2 · 09/01/2024 22:31

So pretty. I loved Barry’s Dance. Exhilarating and clever to make us id on Team Oliver.

ClaireEclair · 09/01/2024 23:19

Chipperchopper · 09/01/2024 21:00

Agree, it was visually interesting, but all very unbelievable and mostly pointless. Surprised by how many people liked it, there were 3 of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen in cinema. It felt gratuitous and I even felt like Barry Keoghan (who is a good actor) was horribly exploited - I felt his discomfort at times. It wasn't clever, dialogue was weak. Funny that so many people are on the side of the rich family by the end, with that horrible middle class upstart stealing their whole estate from under their noses, even though they are thoroughly obnoxious. It's worth remembering that Emerald Fennell comes from an extremely wealthy and privileged background - it feels like a paranoid fever dream.

Some of the scenes (the grave shagging for example) were his idea. Apparently some of the funnier lines from Rosamund, Carey and Richard E Grant were improvised so I actually wonder how much credit the director should get.

I don’t really understand the point of it. Was he in love with Felix or did he just want to own the estate? What was wrong with Rosamund at the end and did he cause her illness? How were the police not suspicious when the family suffered multiple deaths? Especially when the mother’s breathing apparatus was ripped from her throat?

BlastedPimples · 09/01/2024 23:44

Yeah it is a bit shit.

gabbyaggy · 10/01/2024 00:10

The target audience, in my opinion, is late teens and twenties, Barry K and Jacob E are box office catnip. My favourite scene is the Liverpool discussion, Carey M amd Rosamund P and Richard E G are sublime.

Barry K is brilliant in Killing of a Sacred Deer, creepy mac creep face, I think he is the new Jack Nicholson and Christopher Walken.

Danfromdownunder · 10/01/2024 00:16

I loved it. It confirmed all my Aussie dreams that all posh people in England live in grand castles and have the best parties 😁

KinS24 · 10/01/2024 00:23

Daft but very watchable. Some beautiful cinematography. Some great acting. Risible plot.
Barry K is so so unattractive though. People just wouldn’t have reacted to him in the way the plot suggests.

RichardsGear · 10/01/2024 00:27

It was bloody brilliant (no pun intended, though on that note surely Venetia would've had a tampon in?! And that reminds me...where the hell did I see a scene in a film or TV show where someone pulls a used tampon out of a woman with their teeth? I know I haven't made that up).

gabbyaggy · 10/01/2024 00:39

I recall a scene in I Will Destroy You regarding periods, much more intriguing than SB scene.

channellingmoirarose · 10/01/2024 00:39

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 09/01/2024 21:17

Absolutely loved the costumes the parties etc.

However the bizzare trying to shock us crap... Was peculiar. This man must have been a robot to suck that girls blood..but not be attracted to her all because he fancied her brother. The baths scene..

The deaths and that woman coming back to him!!

Bizzare.. Such a shame... It could have been so good had it not been so extreme.

A bit like the very very poor cousin of the servant film.

I think it has a lot lacking, but not sure you get the obsession element. He wanted the sister because he wanted everything associated with the character. It was a devouring, not a desire.

IDontWantToBeInAnyGangThatYoureIn · 10/01/2024 00:44

I really enjoyed it! I didn't really know anything about it apart from hearing about the "shocking" sex scenes (which weren't actually that shocking really, controversial maybe). I thought Barry was fab as Oliver, I know nothing about him but he didn't seem that old to me. I thought it was going to be a gay love affair with him and Felix. And I'm glad they explained it at the end, I wouldn't have got it otherwise. But, my literally level is pretty much YA so maybe that explains it!

fridaynight1 · 10/01/2024 00:51

I watched it for 10 minutes and switched off. Not for me.

Charlize43 · 10/01/2024 01:38

I found it massively overrated and overhyped for a film that was mostly derivative. I suppose it might be OK if you haven't seen The Talented Mr Ripley or Pasolini's Teorema or the countless other films that deal with exactly the same story.

I think it was probably aimed at teenage girls who could then have a good snigger about the actor's cock at the end.

decionsdecisions62 · 10/01/2024 01:54

Mark kemode the film critic describes it as a vampire movie. If you don't like vampire movies then you probably won't like this. Teenage girls do.

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 10/01/2024 03:01

I didn’t love it, but did enjoy it as a campy vampire-gothic version of the Mr Ripley story

have to say (having been at Cambridge around the same time as the writer) I thought the “over the top” depictions of the students were actually bang on!

didn’t get the “explanation” in final 10 mins though? I’d watched the film, I understood that he’d done it - didn’t need my intelligence insulted with that bit!

Emma8888 · 10/01/2024 04:06

Rosamund was the absolute dupe of a friend of mine throughout, even the things she said about the numbers at a party (I forget exactly but something like 'we'll invite 100 but you know it always ends up being closer to 200') and the quips and the mannerisms, it was uncanny. My friend did attend Oxford, and is about the same age, with children a similar age too so I'd say it struck me as very real in parts and as such I quite liked it.
