To think Saltburn was a bit shit

I don’t watch films that often, but watched on Amazon Prime largely due to Carey Mulligan/Rosamund Pike…

It’s visually good, but felt rushed/unbelievable towards the end…

It’s just not convincing - particularly ‘Oliver’…

I absolutely loved it! Was brilliant fun. Jacob Elodi is so handsome, I could watch him all day long, and the ‘grown ups’ were fantastic. Barry is so creepy, he makes me feel very uncomfortable, which is why I thought he was perfect in the role.

NarniaOrBust · 10/01/2024 05:57

It’s fantastic. Every single thing about it. Loved it.

SnowsFalling · 10/01/2024 06:38

It was awful. I turned it off (thankfully at home, not in the cinema).
It can't decide what story it's trying to tell.

Gowlett · 10/01/2024 06:40

What’s it about? Sounds interesting!

Daft but very watchable. Some beautiful cinematography. Some great acting. Risible plot.
Barry K is so so unattractive though. People just wouldn’t have reacted to him in the way the plot suggests.

I think the way he is able to sexually or otherwise cow the poshos isn't meant to be about his attractiveness but his attitude - people used to deference and command secretly longing to be dominated sort of thing. So they expect him to be cringing and servile, and the shock of him being otherwise titillates their jaded souls type thing.

madamepresident · 10/01/2024 07:05

I loved it

Grandmasswag · 10/01/2024 07:10

Loved it too. It wasn’t meant to be serious. A dark comedy but because BK was so brilliant it added a real layer of depth. Apparently he improved the grave scene Shock. Couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards. Raised plenty of questions without being an unsatisfactory ending. All the other characters were brilliant too.

Grandmasswag · 10/01/2024 07:12

Dh went to Oxford as the ‘poor kid’ also thought the depiction of it was quite accurate. Also, for want of a better description, the mental poshos we know are actually not far off the depiction. That’s partly why it was so funny.

renthead · 10/01/2024 07:14

I quite enjoyed it but it was unsettling AF. And neither DH nor I could work out what the point of it was. Was there a message?

The ending didn’t make sense. Don’t want to spoil it but in real life the police would have been all over it.

This. I'm afraid it finally lost me right at the end because there I don't think someone could get away with that. There were also far too many very implausible things that had to happen for him to end up in that position at the end.

My favourite lines from RP were: "I didn't even know Jarvis that well!" and the one about Pamela, something like "she's terribly dull but you don't realise at first because she's so stylish!"

BobnLen · 10/01/2024 07:16

It was ok, a bit dull and overlong, would have been better if half hour shorter, I guess I'm not its target audience though being in my mid 60s

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/01/2024 07:23

I didn't like it at all... I switched it off as I didn't want the images in my head!

It reminds me of The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover. You either love it or hate it. I hated that film too! I don't think I'm the target audience for this type of film.

PoinsettiaLives · 10/01/2024 07:25

I didn’t think the depiction of Oxford was accurate at all and a lot of it seems to have been for the US audience. “Scholarship boy” doesn’t mean poor, colleges don’t have banners up saying “Welcome class of 2006”, posh boys don’t wear a “tux” with a wing collar, people who went to state school and arrive not knowing anyone are the majority, not a small minority etc. That didn’t put me off- it’s not a documentary- but I’m surprised to read that people thought it was accurate.

FeralNun · 10/01/2024 07:27

Queasy. That’s my one word review.

I am a bit relieved to read pp’s reaction to Barry - I feel mean, but his face just gives me the grues. When RP meets him and says something along the lines of ‘thank goodness, I can’t bear ugly people’, my mouth dropped open.

I pretty much hated it, but it’s still with me. Clever.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 10/01/2024 07:34

I liked it but it was fucking mad.

Mumteedum · 10/01/2024 07:44

Agree. Was visually stunning but Emerald Fernel is nowhere near as clever as she thinks she is. I found PYW disappointing too. I thought it was all a bit obvious with deliberate shock moments put in that didn't really make much sense.

Spoiler....

Plus I found it ridiculous that he gets the estate when he can't possibly afford to run it. All just silly.

PoinsettiaLives · 10/01/2024 07:46

And what about the inheritance tax?? 😭

Scrambledchickens · 10/01/2024 07:52

I really liked it, is v dark like a twisted fairy tale. Beautiful sets, warped personalities and Wolf in sheep’s clothing it has stayed with me.

lizkt · 10/01/2024 07:54

I adored it. So over the top. Thought Barry was perfect as Oliver.

anotherside · 10/01/2024 07:55

It was a fun watch. The “edgy” scenes were fun but didn’t elevate it to anything more profound or amazing. I think the viewer/critics consensus is about right - it’s a decent 7/10 type film but no more than that as it’s all pretty superficial filmmaking.

NonSequentialRhubarb · 10/01/2024 07:57

I enjoyed some bits of it and I laughed out loud more than a few times. The cinematography was beautiful and some scenes stick with me now. But overall, I don't enjoy the film. The icky bits just felt like they were there to get attention and the plot as a whole was incredibly contrived towards the end.

I'm also just quite simple when it comes to characters and Saltburn didn't satisfy me. I want a satisfying ending not ambiguity: either everyone should be truly awful and destroying each other, or I want a side to root for even if they aren't perfect. The family had their flaws but with film playing it for laughs and Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant being so amazing, they just came off as initially self centred but harmless followed by massively sympathetic when their children died. The character of Oliver just never felt developed enough for me to care for him at all, even in an anti-hero way.

"Shitty morals character with not enough development for me to care about him exploits unpleasant but harmlessly daft rich people" isn't really a film I care about.

Burlee · 10/01/2024 07:58

My DD watched 20 minutes of it before standing up and declaring the movie terrible so we turned it off.

littlestrawberryhat · 10/01/2024 08:02

Completely agree. Sure it was entertaining but it lacked any sort of depth and had some mixed messages, characters weren’t particularly deep and a few characters who didn’t need to be in it. Very rushed ending and all to convenient. Loved promising young woman, thought it was a hundred times better.

OwlWeiwei · 10/01/2024 08:08

Chipperchopper · 09/01/2024 21:00

Agree, it was visually interesting, but all very unbelievable and mostly pointless. Surprised by how many people liked it, there were 3 of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen in cinema. It felt gratuitous and I even felt like Barry Keoghan (who is a good actor) was horribly exploited - I felt his discomfort at times. It wasn't clever, dialogue was weak. Funny that so many people are on the side of the rich family by the end, with that horrible middle class upstart stealing their whole estate from under their noses, even though they are thoroughly obnoxious. It's worth remembering that Emerald Fennell comes from an extremely wealthy and privileged background - it feels like a paranoid fever dream.

That's pretty much what DS said. It's a really conservative film about uppity middle class oiks jeopardising the extreme wealth of the aristocracy. With some shit shocker scenes. He was very unimpressed.

Funderthighs · 10/01/2024 08:09

I loved it. Sure, it was a bit silly but it was very entertaining.

Cherry35 · 10/01/2024 08:11

Good movie, enjoyed it. Not a wow movie but good enough.

Barry the actor was really good though, and he deserves all the attention he's getting.

A bit of a cliche, and halfway through the movie I could tell the ending.
