To think Saltburn was a bit shit

I don’t watch films that often, but watched on Amazon Prime largely due to Carey Mulligan/Rosamund Pike…

It’s visually good, but felt rushed/unbelievable towards the end…

It’s just not convincing - particularly ‘Oliver’…

As a total aside I just looked at Keoghan's Wikipedia page and discovered he had an incredibly challenging background and childhood, and now feel very rotten for passing remarks on his face. Unlike Fennell (who I have nothing against, I'm sure she's a very nice person) he has really had to overcome a lot to get the acclaim he is currently enjoying, and he really is a very talented actor. Long may his star continue to rise!

Yes he had a mother who was an addict who died when he was 12. He lived with his granny and is from a very poor part of inner city Dublin. Listen up for him saying “up the flats” sometime. It happens a fair bit. He knows exactly where he came from and he is doing himself incredibly proud. He plays disturbing roles beyond exceptionally well (The Banshees on Iniserin - he was incredible).

Can’t believe the comments about his looks. I think he’s a nice looking bloke objectively anyway but he’s all the more brilliant as he’s got such a characterful face. He really is a great talent and I’m glad he’s getting the attention he deserves. Didn’t know he came from such a hard upbringing either. Wow.

I loved it! Was uni age at the time it’s set and I thought the fashion/costume was especially 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

It was okay. I loved Rosamund, she was great. The ending didn’t make sense. Don’t want to spoil it but in real life the police would have been all over it.

I thought that too

it was ok no where near as good or clever as TMR I didn’t feel anything for the characters, if felt like half way through
the decision was made that he was a master manipulator and the shocking scenes just felt they were there to shock they didn’t add to the story

Rosamund Pike was great

What different tastes we all have, I think Barry is gorgeous! I don't see what some of you are seeing at all.

I found it left me feeling empty, and rather an unpleasant encounter. I loved TMR, the novel and the film. But this was a very poor copy. I wondered if it was just upper class paranoia about the nasty, pushy middle classes. Barry was magnetic as a presence, but the film made him too crude and one dimensional as a character to really hold my interest.

I've already said I feel bad about saying it, and that I think he is a good actor and an impressive person for overcoming what he has. I can edit the post to remove it f you're concerned Barry Keoghan himself reads Mumsnet and is currently weeping into his pillow because a random fat lass on Mumsnet doesn't find him attractive. I think he's probably a bit busy doing a million interviews and taking calls from his agent, because say what you like about Saltburn it's made a big splash and got him a lot of well deserved attention.

Not too sure what you're after tbh; is if for me to have a good think about what I've done? Wash my mouth out with soap? Or go publicly flaggellate myself with birch twigs outside the next awards ceremony Keoghan attends?

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 11/01/2024 22:37

Honestly I'm finding this s very odd thread. People critiquing a film getting scolded for not being nice enough to it's director, and now me being singled out for schoolmarmish criticism because I find Keoghan (a man who specialises in creepy parts) creepy? I mean the nuance-free mandate be kind is something we have all grown used to, but if you truly subscribe to the notion that if you can't say anything nice you had better not say anything at all I do think AIBU may not be your natural milieu.

Everything was very convenient rather than inevitable and well plotted (unlike in, say, the far superior The Talented Mr Ripley). The flashback sequence at the end to ‘explain’ everything was unforgivable and actually explained nothing. That was not a clever or well thought out murder plot and it’s frankly amazing that all of these things just happened to work out for him 🙄 Stylish weak nonsense imo. Nowhere near as elegant as the films it was emulating (Ripley, Brideshead, etc). Great cast though.

Is there a film of Brideshead? I need to see it if so!

It takes a huge amount of energy, creativity and self belief to write and direct films, I take my hat off to any woman who manages to do it, rather than tear them down

Yes there are lots of half assed film 'critics' on here trying to sound clever.

Fwiw I thought it was bloody funny and a great romp - highly entertaining and beautiful to look at. Not sure I want much more from a film.

Oh wow. If she weren't already dead I'd be assuming your were Barry's mum now. You are so upset by me not liking his face you've Advanced Searched me so you can try to publicly shame me for having Binge Eating Disorder on a totally unrelated thread? But you're th champion for kindness here? Well I never is all I can say.

And in this case the reason is what? To shame someone for their eating disorder? If you check out some of my other threads, you'll see my bingeing took off when my mother committed suicide - would you like to tell me that was my fault too? You know, while you're getting the boot in on behalf of the poor vulnerable millionaire movie star?

winewolfhowls · 11/01/2024 22:57

I loved Richard and Rosamund (I'm not sure if that's her name) as the parents. Personally would have preferred a film of 90mins of them just being bonkers. Overall a middle of the road film that was trying a bit too hard to be edgy. But as said upthread at least it's not another superhero film!
