Somebody keeps knocking at my door

I’ve no idea who it is. Peeped outside without them seeing me and they keep knocking hard 3 times. Then again 3 times then again 3 times. They left and now half an hour later they’re back. Would you answer? I’m worried as I really do not recognise them

I had a neighbour who was reclusive and a hoarder. One Christmas I took in a lovely bouquet for her, a good £50-worth. It sat in the coolest part of my flat for three weeks. She never collected it. It was a real shame. Unless you owe money, OP, it might be worth checking what this person wants.

margotrose · 15/12/2023 15:30

Ignore the posters saying just open the door op! I wouldn't either, especially if you're not expecting a visitor.

Sometimes people knock on doors to help you. I can think of several occasions where someone's knocked to tell me I'd left my headlights on, or that DH had left his keys in the door, or that they had a parcel for us that we weren't even aware of. We also had someone bang on our door to warn us about a fire.

Luckily we answered the door in all those situations, especially the last one - it saved our lives.

Did you answer the door?
Not answering heightens your anxiety even more!
It could be as simple as a kind neighbour telling you you've left your lights on, on your car
Get a door chain... it's that simple

A chain doesn't do anything, they can be snapped through with bolt cutters in seconds.

Op hasn’t replied for a bit.. maybe she answered the door and has been kidnapped by aliens?

All the people criticising her will feel so guilty if she got beamed up, thoroughly probed and returned with a rubber ring and an ice pack.

KimberleyClark · 15/12/2023 15:45

I've got no problem someone walking right past my window with me in full view and still not answer the door if I'm working or halfway through a knitting row or just knackered, in pain and can't be arsed.

Had a mental image of you having a massive argument with someone about knitting and not wanting to be interrupted.

IncompleteSenten · 15/12/2023 15:49

😂 well I'd be lying if I said that never happens.

mottytotty · 15/12/2023 15:50

Get a video doorbell then you can pretend not to be in and be burgled

AllAroundMyCat · 15/12/2023 15:52

Maybe a neighbour has a package or letter of your's?

Unless you answer, you won't know.

That so many people have anxiety around opening their front doors ( as evidenced on MN) is genuinely concerning.

So many things can be done to mitigate 'anxiety' at opening a door.

CBT
A peep hole
A door chain
A camera doorbell
CCTV
Head out of the window

Just deal with it.

Didydani · 15/12/2023 15:59

@Frasers I posted it because those are my thoughts and obviously that can happen. Unfortunately it is that time of year and people do break in. I'm not sure what world you live in, but it's certainly not as safe as you think it is!

Sure, all the other reasons and possibilities are valid, but you don't just know. I'm glad I and a few others here have some common sense and sense of danger.

This is unrelated to the thread, but since it's about complete strangers I'll post it it anyway. In the past year, I've been

A - followed all the way from town (after a night out) an hour and half away from my house by a man who wouldn't leave me alone. I thought about running away from him but it was in the early hours of the morning, pitch black and I knew I wouldn't stand a chance as he was much bigger and stronger than me, so if he attacked I was fucked. When we got my house, he sexually assaulted me. Had the nerve to ask me "how the sex was". I eventually got him out by telling him I had to go out that day but he came back the day after, trying to gain entry again!! Left me a voicemail demanding that "he wanted to come my house, let me in!"

B) Several months ago I got robbed by a local drug addict, who when I first met him told me he was homeless, so I gave him some change for food. The second I bumped into him, he literally walked to the cash machine and made me withdraw what was in my account, so he could use it for his drugs.

Some people in this world are utter scum!! I do not blame op for being cautious and to those making awful 'jokes' about the op being abducted by aliens etc.. I hope for ops sake she is OK and doesn't come back with awful news that she has been robbed or attacked. It isn't t funny, you're not funny!!

coldcallerbaiter · 15/12/2023 16:01

I saw a uk crime program where a guy holding a parcel knocked on the door, and beat the 3 Chinese women up, trying to do a robbery.
Those with perceived Indian gold too are targeted.

I am none of these, but I still do not just open a door wide. Plus I hate salespeople and am always so rude which puts me on a bad mood

I do not open the door, I ask via the intercom, if it is a parcel they can leave it outside.

Security first.

Aliens don't knock on doors. They're big Mumsnet fans and know it's pointless.

Didydani · 15/12/2023 16:05

@coldcallerbaiter thank God, someone with a brain with more than two working cells! Safety first indeed.

OP, I hope you're ok. My intention is not to scare you, just to say you're using your common sense. Sorry to hear you're feeling so anxious about this mystery knocker. I would be too.

azlazee1 · 15/12/2023 16:06

I wouldn't answer the door unless I knew who was on the other side. Can you call out and ask who it is?

With all the kindness in the world, you need treatment for your anxiety.

QueenBean22 · 15/12/2023 16:17

So many bitchy people on here. 🙄

OP I have opened my door so many times to people wasting my time, either Jehovah’s, charity collectors or salesman I only answer if I’m expecting someone now

zingally · 15/12/2023 16:18

Only on MN do people get so weird about answering knocks at the door.

I get that anxiety is a thing... honestly, I do. But how do people function through life if a simple knock on the door is enough to send you spiraling? Surely opening it up and KNOWING what the person wants is better than the "what if" thoughts?

FuckingHellAdele · 15/12/2023 16:22

I've answered my door twice today.

This thread has made me realise I was dicing with death Shock

Reliy · 15/12/2023 16:24

I also struggle with anxiety around the door op, I would recommend a video camera it’s really helped me.

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 15/12/2023 16:24

For those wondering where the OP has disappeared off to there is really no need to worry. She finally answered the door to me and we’re now having a good chat 🙂.

PandaPacer · 15/12/2023 16:24

Anyone else thinking about this poem?

Some one came knocking
At my wee, small door;
Someone came knocking;
I'm sure-sure-sure;
I listened, I opened,
I looked to left and right,
But nought there was a stirring
In the still dark night;
Only the busy beetle
Tap-tapping in the wall,
Only from the forest
The screech-owl's call,
Only the cricket whistling
While the dewdrops fall,
So I know not who came knocking,
At all, at all, at all.

Well usually in the real world people open the door. If you do that you have a better chance of finding out who it is than asking random strangers on MN.

Mourningmorningsleep · 15/12/2023 16:27

Answer it! I can't understand not answering, you'd answer the phone even if you weren't expecting a call. Yesterday three strangers knocked, I answered. They were the fire brigade doing smoke alarm checks. They came in with a step ladder, drill and sack of smoke alarms and installed two and tested our existing one, knocking this task off my to do list in a matter of minutes for no money. How awesome that someone knocked to surprise make my life easier and safer. Excellent door knock.

ChateauDuMont · 15/12/2023 16:28

It's the ghost of Keith Chegwin.

Anyone remember when he knocked on Robert Lindsey's house and got more or less told to fuck off?! 😂
