Settle an argument with DH, who thinks me bleaching the toilet each day is OTT. My reasoning- it's the grossest place in the house, why wouldn't you?!

Why the heck is everyone bleaching so much and so often?! I’ve only ever bleached my toilet when someone in the house has norovirus. So maybe once a year.

What’s wrong with just wiping the toilet down whenever you clean the bathroom? It’s not like you’re eating off it. Mine always looks clean and doesn’t smell.

WetBandits · 02/12/2023 22:58

The toilet brushes (silicone, so much easier to keep clean Wink) get put around the bowl after every poo, by whoever did the poo. Any wee splatters are wiped up as and when they occur.

The toilets get a full clean once a week. We live in an area with very hard water and get a lot of limescale buildup, so we will also use a descaling tablet every couple of weeks. The toilet brushes are disinfected weekly.

Dogcatmousecat · 02/12/2023 23:00

Loo cleaned everyday! Just wish husband would put loo seat down after having a piss …fucking aggravating me !

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/12/2023 23:05

When I can see it needs cleaning, sometimes that might be done several days in a row but then I might go a couple of weeks without doing it if it doesn’t have any visible stains.

watchingtheworldwithwoe · 02/12/2023 23:06

Daily in our household. The cleaner does a deep clean twice a week too x

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/12/2023 23:06

Awful to hear how many people are shoving bleach down the loo every day regardless of whether it is actually dirty. Honestly no wonder the planet is in crisis.

sweetpickle23 · 02/12/2023 23:08

I don't eat meat, fly long haul, own a car, nor am I having children- I don't feel too bad about a bit of bleach @MolkosTeenageAngst

Well maybe you should, especially if it’s only adults in your home. I assumed everyone bleaching their toilets daily have messy kids, if there are only adults I really can’t see the need, my toilet with just me at home rarely needs any chemicals put down it.

PickAChew · 02/12/2023 23:11

Bleached once every few weeks. Much more.frequent once over with the bog brush, with or without toilet cleaner and the seat is wiped over most days. Hardly ever bleach the saniflo loo as it's bad for the workings. I put an enzyme tablet in it about once a month to remove sludge.

Bobbybobbins · 02/12/2023 23:11

Once a week. Cba with more often.

Gall10 · 02/12/2023 23:12

It’s not the loo that needs cleaning…it’s door handles, taps, soap dispensers, tea towels, kettle handles, TV channel changers, mobile phones, bannisters, you get the idea!

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 02/12/2023 23:12

About once a week unless it needs it.

Certainly don't have time to do this sort of thing daily.

thedementedelf · 02/12/2023 23:13

Several times a day.

Dunnoburt · 02/12/2023 23:13

Whenever we have "visitors" 🤣🤣🤣

As I said upthread, nothing else seems to feel as 'clean' as bleach to me- genuinely open to suggestions though as do feel bad about it!

I assume you don't have or live with someone who has bowel issues if you don't need any chemicals.

Had lentils yesterday so about 5 times in 24 hours! Spray with antibacterial and wipe with toilet roll after every use. We all have our own individual toilet too and a spare toilet downstairs no poo in the downstairs one though 💩

LuluBlakey1 · 02/12/2023 23:16

Either DH or I spray anti-bacterial cleaner on seat and inside once a day and wipe seat, scrub inside with brush. Cleaning fluid once a week and proper scrub- steep overnight.

Haricot · 02/12/2023 23:16

I’ve stopped using bleach (so bad for the environment) and have adopted Nancy Birtwhistle’s citric acid based recipe for cleaning the toilet bowl.
And use her vinegar and surgical spirit based cleaner for the seat.
Nobody’s got ill as a result of not using bleach and the toilets are clean

MrsHarrisAParis · 02/12/2023 23:17

Do you meant the toilet or the room?
The toilet every day. The sink every day. The rest of the room probably twice per week.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 02/12/2023 23:17

With the toilet brush? Very rarely, but that's because i have OCD and a "fear" if you will, of the scrubbing with a brush causing toilet water to flick up out of the toilet/aerosolise. So that is saved for if it's needed to shift limescale etc right before a shower.

BUT i always either have an in cistern block, or use toilet gel/cleaner/bleach after every poo, and sometimes after wees, so atleast once a day. I have antibac toilet wipes for the seat, and i do spray a mist of disinfectant like zoflora over the seat and cistern/flush every time i go, along with the taps.

No I live alone and don’t generally have any bowel issues, I appreciate someone with bowel issues might need to clean more frequently although still think it’s better to scrub a stain off with a brush straight away by the adult whose done it before it’s dried on than just cover it with bleach. I use Ecover toilet cleaner which has always worked well for anything more stubborn but usually I find that as long as any poo is scrubbed straight away it rarely needs doing. As long as the loo looks stain free I don’t really get why it needs to be super clean to the point of disinfected with bleach, it’s not like anyone is going to be touching it.

Humbugg · 02/12/2023 23:19

Once a week. Also it’s usually not the dirtiest place in your house…things like tv remote have more bacteria

ChicagoBears · 02/12/2023 23:19

Every day.

witchypaws · 02/12/2023 23:20

When it needs it
I take the toilet seat off and clean it (pop off type one) and scrub the toilet with whatever is to hand. Currently using a shower gel I hated the smell of Grin and I've used that to wash the seat too
Generally clean most stuff with hot soapy water
