Sick of hairdressers not getting me the colour I want?

I want to go silver. I show them the exact colour I want and I alway end up with ash blonde mixed with warm blonde pieces. I hate it.

I’ve had six sessions already and probably paid near £1K now and still nothing.

This is currently my colour and it’s definitely not silver.

I have had similar issues with hairdressers. I don’t know if it’s them not listening or they don’t do what I want as they either can’t or don’t think it’d look nice. Either way if wish they were just honest.

Cupcakekiller · 26/11/2023 19:54

I had silver hair a few years ago. It has to be bleached as pale as it will go, within an inch of its life, the a silver dye put on top which washes out very quickly. Not worth the hassle.

Torganer · 26/11/2023 19:58

My hair is your colour in the photo OP, but when I have highlights (loads of packed highlights), my hairdresser uses toners to achieve that silver colour. I then top it up myself with Wella Ilumina toner with pastel developer and I get a silvery purple blonde. 10/69 and 9/60 work well for this, but I think you’ll need to lift the colour more.

Thank you, I’ve previously used Pulp Riot but my hair isn’t light enough for it to make a difference.

Exactly. I went in for a consultation and showed her a photo, she said yes that’s lovely and did patch/strand test.

Went for my appointment a week later and she started talking about blonde and I was like you mean silvery blonde right? And she didn’t look at the photo again and said next time we can add more blonde.

There won’t be a next time…

I’ve just googled Pulp Riot and I don’t think that would make a difference. Wella colours are great and longer lasting. Illumina has tonal colour so it looks vibrant and shimmery. I use 9/16 on the roots then 10/69 towards the ends. I watch it like a hawk, then brush it all through to blend and rinse.

ttcat37 · 26/11/2023 20:05

Same. I’m sick of spending a lot of money and getting home and thinking “well, my hair still looks shit”.
I’ve had a consultation with a new hairdresser who seems to be more knowledgeable and experienced than the others I’ve tried. She seems to know what the last hairdressers have done wrong so that’s a good sign I suppose.

I'm sure your normal, natural hair is perfectly lovely.

If you're willing to throw away £1,000 because your normal hair isn't good enough for you then I think the saying "a fool and their money" applies here.

It is, but there’s nothing wrong with change. And don’t worry I can easily afford it 😊

I'd be annoyed if they kept leading me on. It sounds like she's imposing her taste on you.

Maybe try heading to a 'trendy' salon like BLEACH in London? Or others of that kind in medium to large cities? A train to a city seems better than repeat disappointment.

But saying that, my local hairdresser is an absolute gem in a notoriously fen-folk part of the UK and can do the LA-girl to wild-punk colour hair.

Greatfull · 26/11/2023 20:48

Where are you in theUK? If you're in the south east I know an amazing colourist who could do that for you. I've seen her dye very dark hair to some incredible light colours. She's a magician with hair

badhappenings · 26/11/2023 20:51

Yes, I totally understand how frustrated you must feel, because it's definitely achieveable.

If you showed them a photo, go back and get your money back.

Then let your hair rest a bit and recover and then go to a top-notch hairdressers.

hollyhockss · 26/11/2023 20:09

Yes that the colour it goes when I use Wella. I just meant that the Pulp Riot won’t do that to your hair as it’s not light enough and won’t have the staying power. I think you can achieve that colour, you just need to go a lot lighter and get it toned properly.

SuspiciousSue · 26/11/2023 20:54

Why on Earth do you want silver? I don’t think it looks nice on anyone. That colour looks lovely.

NewBabyGirl2020 · 26/11/2023 21:13

You need a new hairdresser. I was always your current colour and then went to an amazing hairdressers in London and he said I should go that silver blonde. Within one go he did it perfectly. He was a master at highlights and then added a toner. I used purple shampoo between visits to keep it silver. It was amazing. After two years my hair was getting ruined so I went back to a natural blonde.

I moved location and now can’t find a single hairdresser that can do highlights anywhere as good. You need an amazing hairdresser but I know how hard they are to find

RogueFemale · 26/11/2023 21:26

Go to a top London salon. Most provincial salons are shit. And yes, many London salons are shit, too. I mean a TOP London salon.

This seems very uneven. The roots and ends are pure-cool, but the midsection is warm/yellow.

Wow. Delightful.
And such an articulate message.
Good luck with your hair... you haven't wanted anyone's advice so keep wasting your time and money.

Changethenamey · 26/11/2023 22:05

I’ve had my hair that platinum before, I loved it! I only ever found one hairdresser that could/would do it, she would use foils but bleach all of the hair (so slices, but the whole lot), followed by toner which needed topping up every few weeks. It took hours but luckily my hair could take it and didn’t look too dry after. Unfortunately she left the salon and I have tried various other places who never get it right, or refuse to do the slices as it will ruin my hair (fair enough I appreciate they don’t feel comfortable doing it as it’s risky). I’m at the point of giving up and going back to brown now as I can’t bare the yellow tones and random highlights any more!

JaniceJanice · 26/11/2023 22:12

@hollyhockss is it possible that you are going to the wrong type of hairdresser? I live in a small town, and if you want anything out of the ordinary (not highlights/blonde balayage/blue rinse) you just won’t get it here. Drives me bonkers… my hairdresser freaked out when I asked for an undercut. Are you going to a ‘hip’ ‘alternative’ type salon?

Goodornot · 26/11/2023 22:14

£1000 on 6 dye sessions. Fuck.

Misses point

Are you a hairdresser?

It's a known fact that once hair is damaged beyond a certain point only so much can be done - it's possible to make it look less damaged but it is still damaged. Only the new growth will be undamaged.

My hair is silver. It’s taken me 64 years to get it this colour, and doesn’t cost me a penny!!!

You've been absolutely done over, mine only took 58 years and two sons Grin!

Get a new hairdresser 💇‍♀️ 😂
